To ring in sick

I feel terrible. Headache, my eyes hurt, sore throat, achey muscles. The thought of going to work for 8 hours is really not good.

I know lots of people would still go to work and I feel guilty for not going in if I don't. DH thinks I'm crazy for even considering going in, but I know my colleagues are always in when they're not well. Yet here I am tempted to ring in.

So do you ring in when you're poorly or are you someone who would go in when ill? What do you think of colleagues who ring in sick when you would have gone in?

If it makes any difference I work in an office and was off for 2 days with D & V about 3 months ago. Oh and I'm an on going temp so won't get paid if I don't go in.

So please either give me permission to ring in or kick my arse and tell me to suck it up and get to work.

So you have colleagues who go in when they're ill to pass on all their germs to you? What bell ends heroes.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 13/10/2015 08:48

If you are unwell enough not to mind not being paid, then stay in bed.

Tyrannosaurus · 13/10/2015 08:49

I wouldn't go in. I think one day at home resting can often make you feel a lot better, rather than dragging yourself in, and spending the next week feeling awful, and not being productive. I know what you mean though. I was off sick with a similar bug last week, and I felt ridiculously guilty.

Isthereeverarightime1 · 13/10/2015 08:49

I work in an office where a particular colleague is rarely sick and very judgemental of others when they are off sick, when on the rare occasion she is sick she comes into the office and spreads it to everyone else and then moans when they are off, equally she moans when people come in and says things like "I hope you don't pass that to me" it makes everyone feel uncomfortable to either be off sick or go in! Most normal people will be thankful that you are not passing it around.

I have called in sick today as have the D of D/V and don't wanna spend my day running in and out of lol but I know what my colleague will be saying to all who will listen!

If you feel really poorly of course you should stay home and rest.

Pottering not helpful. There's always one, isn't there.
No DrHarleen ynbu to call in sick. With the greatest respect you're not going to be any good to anyone anyway

sorry gonnagle but I really don't agree. I too suffer with an auto-immune disease and some of the meds I take can leave me immunocompromised but I do not see it as other peoples duty to stop me becoming unwell. If we are that worried then we should be the ones to stay home, not expect everyone else to! When I have colds etc I always go into work, otherwise after 3 periods off ill find myself in a capability hearing Sad

What did you end up doing OP? I lasted two hours before coming home to go to an emergency doctors appointment - wish I hadn't bothered going into work now.

SevenOfNineTrue · 13/10/2015 11:46

Stay at home and call in sick. Look after your health. The company won't go bust if you don't attend for a day or two.

Be kind to yourself.

I stayed off. Currently snuggling in a sleeping bag on the settee as planned. I'm glad I stayed off, but still feel bad for not going in. For all those saying that people should go in with a cold and a sniffle. I usually do, but today I feel crap and I know I won't feel any better if I go in. I find when I have a cold with a blocked or runny nose by being active I don't feel as bad. Today my nose is fine it's my head, eyes and muscles that are aching.

I think I will be better tomorrow. The point where me resting will get me better sooner is a good one. At least the company aren't going to waste any money by paying me to not be fully capable of work. Plus even though people may not be understanding of me staying off, no-one is going to thank me for going in. I won't get any special mentions for dragging myself in.

I agree with everyone who says don't spread your germs around - not just to your colleagues, but to other people you come into contact with on the way to work. Hope you feel better soon!
