to think that the police should send someone?

It's now Monday morning, some asshat polite member of society is apparently having a party on the street backing on to us and their music is so loud I can hear it in my house with the doors and windows shut. At 00:30 I phoned the non emergency line about the noise thinking they'd send someone to point out that perhaps the music should be turned off to be told that noise complaints are a council issue and that the police can't do anything.

They're still going. I can't sleep. Am I really so unreasonable to want the police to go and knock because they have police uniforms so would look menacing and I look about 14 (despite being in my late 20s) and will probably get punched in the face if I go?

Depends how many police there are, and what else they're dealing with!

ilovesooty · 12/10/2015 01:03

It depends how busy they are dealing with emergencies.

proudmum690 · 12/10/2015 01:15

tbh if its a sunday they're most likely students, and unless youve gone and talked to them asking them to turn it down a bit politely then theres not much reason to get the police involved. im sure theyre people that will be reasonable and polite regardless of how old you loook

Pobspits · 12/10/2015 01:18

But you haven't even asked them to turn it down? Tbh I wouldn't even consider calling the police about something like this. If it's a one off especially is just suck it up.

ilovesooty · 12/10/2015 01:23

It would be ridiculous to expect intervention from the police if you've made no attempt to resolve the matter yourself.

lorelei9 · 12/10/2015 01:30

Your local environmental health team should have a noise nuisance number you can call at this time
I do understand why you are reluctant to go round. Can a neighbour go with you?

boobubsmum · 12/10/2015 01:37

I haven't attempted to resolve the matter myself but given the slanging match that had occurred shortly before the music was turned up at midnight I'm pretty certain they weren't going to be reasonable to my request to turn it down having already turned someone else down in not so polite terms. Also it was the non emergency number, it's not like I phoned 999 expecting them to send someone out, blocking someone in genuine emergency need from getting through. It's also not a one off, though it's the first time I've noticed it on a night that isn't a Friday / Saturday and normally the music is turned down by midnight.

Though apparently I am being unreasonable, I'll just sit here and stew in my unreasonableness, the music is still going, I have to admit I'm a little jealous, wish I had their stamina!

I don't think the police do noise, its environmental health.

I was once wandering around in my street looking for the source of some very loud music at about 2am on a school night possibly in a dressing gown, when a passing police car stopped to ask if I was ok. They said they couldn't do anything about it as such, but would reverse up and sit outside the offending flat with their blue lights on for a bit. They duly did, and the music stopped.

I could never quite work out if it was worth being caught outside in a dressing gown or not.

boobubsmum · 12/10/2015 01:49

Aye up he did say it wasn't them that dealt with noise, but given the frequency with which noise at the property that I suspect to be responsible ends with half a dozen police cars I just sort of assumed they were the people to call. Totally worth being caught out in your dressing gown if it resulted in the music stopping! I think the music here has stopped! or it's paused, it's certainly eerily quiet I can also see a blue glow from that direction, but it could just as easily be over enthusiastic Christmas lights...

Glad to hear its stopped. Sleep well Smile

Redglitter · 12/10/2015 02:47

The police provably would come out eventually but to be honest in the great scheme of things a noisy party just isn't going to get priority. We send someone if we have someone if not and there's no repeat complaint within about 90 mins it's assumed the party is over. Resources are so stretched these days we have to do the best we can with what we have

DontHaveAUsername · 12/10/2015 02:53

I think it's pretty bad but then again I work on a Monday so of course I'm going to feel that way if I can't get to sleep for noise. I'd definitely be going over and asking them to turn it down.

"will probably get punched in the face if I go?"

Ah so is there a history of violence with this neighbour/are they known for violence?

Doublebubblebubble · 12/10/2015 02:59

Always always always go through environmental health first. Noise really isn't a priority to the police... They can take a bit of time to get to you but they are almost always very good and discreet too.
