to use my DP's antibiotics?

DP got conjunctivitis last week and now I've got it. I'm laid up with it, feeling ill and tired too (? Don't know why).

I've got to be in work tomorrow as my boss as off and I'm manning things (lawyer).

WIBU to use his unopened second tube of antibiotics? He's finished his course.

If it's a prescribed medication that isn't available over the counter then YABU I think because what's right for your DH may not be right for you?

I don't remember feeling ill and tired with conjunctivitis - just had horribly itchy and irritated eyes with disgusting gunk.

Salmotrutta · 11/10/2015 10:57

Can you still get boric acid crystals from chemists?

That's what my mum used on me - made it into a solution and bathed my eyes in it.

Probably banned now or something but it did help!

Donge13 · 11/10/2015 10:59

Use it...I would Wink

DesertorDessert · 11/10/2015 10:59

Normally, using other people's antibiotics is a comment leate no, and I came on here to say that. However, I'm not actually convinced that your case it is unreasonable. If you are sure there is enough for you to finish the course to.
Can conjunctivitis be bad enough to lay you up in bed, or have you got something else, which your body is fighting, hence picking up the conjunctivitis? Hope your better soon

cookielove · 11/10/2015 11:00

If it is unopened then it will be fine to use, assuming that you are not allergic to the ingredients.

Cloppysow · 11/10/2015 11:01

I would

Salmotrutta · 11/10/2015 11:02

Actually, if it's a cream then I think I'll change my mind and say Yes, use it.

But stop right away if you react in any way.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 11/10/2015 11:03

I probably would, but I wouldn't expect it to mean you'll get better. It sounds like your immune system is busy dealing with something else.

charis3 · 11/10/2015 11:12

ABSOLUTELY and utterly CRIMINALLY selfish and irresponsible

can't believer that anyone in this day and age could possibly consider doing this.

The law needs to be changed to bring in the strongest possible penalties for anyone helping themselves to other peoples antibiotics, as normal good sense and basic morals don't seem to be stopping people.

The single biggest threat to the future of the whole of mankind, selfish idiots like you

BojackHorseman · 11/10/2015 11:19

Why has your partner got any left? I thought that doctors prescribe just enough and that if you take them as directed then there shouldn't be any left?

LittleLionHeart · 11/10/2015 11:20

He was prescribed a tube for each eye and it only ever affected one eye.

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 11/10/2015 11:21

Boric acid in your eye????? Shock

Blueberry234 · 11/10/2015 11:23

Is it chloramphenicol? If so then yes I would as if you presented to the pharmacy with conjunctivitis then they would give you

londonrach · 11/10/2015 11:24

you should always finish a course of abs annd never share them with others as your medical history is different to someone else. However in this case im not sure. Is the tube completely unopened. Id be tempted to take the tube and yourself to local pharmacy and ask their advice. Hope you feeling better soon.

Pseudo341 · 11/10/2015 11:25

I would. No point wasting expensive medicine when you need it. I used up my daughter's banana flavoured penicillin once when she'd finished the set number of days and there was some left in the bottle then I got ill on the weekend. I just looked up the correct dose for an adult at took that. Confessed to the doctor on the Monday who agreed that it was a perfectly reasonable thing to have done. No point using up an emergency appointment for something minor and I was already getting better by the time I saw him because of it. Then law is there for a reason but you are allowed to apply common sense.

ItchyArmpits · 11/10/2015 11:25

Doesn't conjunctivitis usually get better by itself?

Also, hot-wash your pillow cases.

MrsJorahMormont · 11/10/2015 11:26

I would use it if I knew I wasn't allergic to anything in it. I'm pretty sure you can get cream over the counter for the old pink eye.

MidnightRed · 11/10/2015 11:26

I came on to say no, no way, absolutely not but From what you're written I don't think YWBU, no. Can you google and see if what he's been prescribed is the standard, front line treatment for conjunctivitis? Because if it is then I think I would use it in this case. What's the point of dragging yourself to OOH if they're going to prescribe something you already have?

Scarletforya · 11/10/2015 11:26

Yea, bang it in!

Fannyupcrutch · 11/10/2015 11:28

WOAH Charis, Don't hold back, please....say what you think!

Its a tube of eye cream that is available over the counter. Hardly a big deal.

Tubularbells · 11/10/2015 11:29

Optrex infected eye is over the counter and antibiotic. I'd try that first

Salmotrutta · 11/10/2015 11:29

sharonthewasp - it wasn't neat boric acidGrin... It was a weak solution made up (as per directions on packet) as a wash.

I remember it worked - but as I said it's probably banned now! Grin

HelsBels3000 · 11/10/2015 11:29

Go to pharmacy and buy Optrex 'infected eye' drops over the counter? About a fiver.

HelsBels3000 · 11/10/2015 11:30

Sorry x-posted with Tubular

a1992 · 11/10/2015 11:30

Warm tea bags work amazingly on conjunctivitis and bathing your eyes in warm tea as well
