To put DS' antibiotics in a glass of cola?

I think I am, but I'm at my wit's end.

DS (2.7) has a chest and throat infection. He needs antibiotics. He was at my Dad's for the latter part of last week, they couldn't get any in to him. DH and I have been trying Friday night with limited success. Tried bribing him with chocolate buttons, explaining why he needs them, demonstrating on teddies, offering the choice between syringe and spoon - no luck. Resorted to wrapping him in a towel and just trying to squirt it in but he clamps his mouth shut and spits out what little we do get in.

In desperation, I mixed this morning's dose in a cup with about an inch of cola, which he guzzled down. I'm torn between just getting the medicine in him any which way, and worrying about his teeth. Oh, and wondering if the cola will interfere with the medicine in any way.

AIBU? And if so - how the hell do I get these ABs in to him?

BTW, I tasted the ABs myself. It tastes of banana, hardly bitter at all so no idea why he won't take it.

Help!!

Anything that gets them into your child is fine. The priority is to get the medicine in so the chest infection doesn't worsen. We used to mix it with jam

Sirzy · 11/10/2015 12:52

As long as it's a small enough amount that they have it all then I don't see a problem. Coke isn't ideal but it's better than the alternative of not having them!

Thefitfatty · 11/10/2015 12:55

I've done it. My DD 2 is horrible for taking medication. If she can taste it she won't drink it, and if we put it in a syringe she throws it up. It's the only way to get stuff down her.

quirkychick · 11/10/2015 12:56

Aah, posted too soon!

we used to mix it with jam and give dd1 a jam sandwich - massive treat! She was regularly hospitalised for chest infections and asthma. In hospital the nurses had to hold her down as they needed to know exactly how much abs she'd had. The restraining and syringe only made the spitting out worse once we were home. Also, I am allergic to penicillin, so really did not want to have amoxicillin sprayed in my face.

There's more sugar in those fruit smoothies than there is a little bit of coke. Your stomach is more acidic than coke anyway so that shouldn't be a problem. If it works and he takes it willingly then I honestly wouldn't worry.

AliceTerrapin · 11/10/2015 12:57

Obviously this thread can only go one way.
OP aibu?
Sane and normal people. "No who cares, it's just a drink"

Passive aggressive helpful commenter. "Have you tried threading it into woven lentils?"

Competitive show mums. "Never needed to do that to make my child take meds"

Weird but think they are not mums. "Yabu to give your child this medication. Try changing their diet or homeopathy".

Delightfully predicatable. Meanwhile in the normal real world, if you want to, do. If you think it will cause lifetime damage, don't.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 11/10/2015 13:05

I'm a dentist and even I would have no problem with this.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 11/10/2015 13:05

Well you don't need me to tell you that coke is not ideal for taking tablets for anyone let alone a 2 year old, but we don't live in an ideal world, do we and come hell or high water you have to get those anti biotics into his system
And if you've tried everything else then you have no other option. It's not like he's going to be on the anti biotics forever.
Yy. About extra brushing, too.

Yes, your stomach is more acidic and but that doesn't mean that it is okay for a medicine to be in an acidic environment before it reaches the stomach (I think it is okay for this particular medicine and formulation but that isn't the case for all).

Think op is going to doc to get more medication so that should be ok.

LetThereBeCupcakes · 12/10/2015 10:10

Right, just thought I'd update.

Just spoken to the duty GP.

Putting the ABs in a drink is absolutely fine. Cola included.

No need to panic about the spat out doses. Apparently most people are fine with just 5 days worth. So the plan is to see how he is on Wednesday morning, and if still chesty ring back and she'll leave a new prescription.

Phew!

Good to know, thanks op!

MrsMook · 12/10/2015 11:09

I still can't stand banana flavours after taking antibiotics 30 years ago!

Hope he's better soon.

quirkychick · 12/10/2015 21:16

Me neither... yuck.

MrsBalustradeLanyard · 12/10/2015 21:29

It's a drink of fizzy juice, not pure bloody heroin.

A lot of people on this thread need to calm. The. Fuck. Down. Hmm

Notimefortossers · 12/10/2015 21:34

Well I personally think that this is PURE genius OP. You've saved me. My DD2 is prone to tonsilitus and she gets this VILE orage stuff that tastes like death (phenoxymethylpenicillin) that I'm told there's no alternative to. She'll think all her Christmas's have come at once if I let her have it in coke! No more fighting! Hurrah!

Mmmmcake123 · 12/10/2015 22:00

I agree it's more important to get the meds down so if a small amount of coke is what it takes, then fair enough. I also agree with posts that say don't overdo brushing teeth and leave it a while after, ideally give a savoury snack following the dose to balance sugar and acid in the mouth before brushing. My DD loved apples and only had sweeties on a Friday, she regularly went to the dentist and I thought her dental hygiene routine was perfect, but she developed tooth decay age 6 ish I think. The dentist explained to me that if she ate apples and I brushed soon after I was actually damaging her teeth. At your lo's age I don't think you can do any lasting damage from small amounts of coke over the course of abs.

overthemill · 12/10/2015 22:15

annihilated the advice now ( my dd was NG fed until last month) is NOT Coke or other fizzles but in practice all the community nurses do it! We use a tiny syringe to unblock tube ( also a no no but hey!). For my dd who literally vomits up everything by mouth we used to use a syringe which she could suck a tiny bit of meds at a time to help with vomiting. Until NG. Also we added lemon juice to everything to help take away horrid taste of meds. But that banana AB is truly gross

Onthepigsback · 12/10/2015 23:51

YA only BU in telling us. This is the sort of thing we do and don't mention to other people;)

kali110 · 13/10/2015 16:33

I must really be the only one who loved the banana anti biotics Grin
Wish i could have an adult version!
