Yes really

Get from one place to another in a fixed time : not possible in the bus schedule
and costs £17 out of weekly benefit of £110

Value for money shopping : when everything has to be carried in a 3kg backpack due to spinal injury (weigh your shopping please)

and the person I'm trying to help does not have access to a Fridge or Cooker (under Osbornes rules)

count your blessings : PLEASE

I've never felt the need for one tbh.

Mind you, I can see why some people do.

sproketmx · 10/10/2015 22:15

I've never really been without a car since I was 17. It's not really possible to live where I do and not have one. Which is why I'm a bit Hmm when I hear an adult saying they don't drive because in rl I only know one person who doesn't drive and she's registered partially sighted.

TalkinPeece · 10/10/2015 22:16

do you live in a city ?

Tell me more about the rule about not having access to a fridge or cooker Sad?

TalkinPeece · 10/10/2015 22:20

TBH the person I'm trying to help has never, and never will have a car
but it then utterly shocks me when I list off what I expect to achieve with a car as against a disabled person walking and catching buses

and remember that Oyster and regulation are only in London

I can manage with out a car.

Where I live to use the bus service all day it £3.50.

Then a taxi from the supermarket is £5 or I can online shop.

I do have a car and it's handy for taking the children to places in which its quicker to use the car.

WorraLiberty · 10/10/2015 22:23

Yes I live in London, which is why I don't feel the need.

My sister however, lives in the middle of nowhere and could never manage without hers.

do you live in a city?

No I live in one of the west fife villages with busses more than an hour apart to the nearest town 9 miles away and four busses to the nearest supermarket and back.

PlayingSolitaire · 10/10/2015 22:28

Thanks for telling me about HB rule, I hadn't heard that Angry

I live somewhere fairly urban. There is still only an every half hour bus service which only (obviously) only goes a limited route and only half hour if you're lucky and stops running before 5pm! It costs £6 to travel less than 3 miles away.

TalkinPeece · 10/10/2015 22:35

buses by the hour

I feel a little foolish that I haven't learnt to drive, people seem to be a bit raised eyebrow at that in most places (apart from London). I'm originally from London but currently living in South Essex, which is one of those places where a car isn't essential, but really handy and to be fair lots of (none essential) things are out of reach without one.

sproketmx · 10/10/2015 22:58

Yeh two of my friends moved to yell a few years ago which is one if the Shetland Isles and they have a bus that comes once a week on the ferry to take them to Lerwick then picks them up in Lerwick and back on the ferry. You're a bit buggered if you miss that one

Murfles · 10/10/2015 22:59

Peoples financial circumstances differ. Some people see a car as a necessity (like me). I also see having a car as a necessity for my kids. We live rurally and we chose to live here so having cars to come and go is a necessity.

shatteredstudentmum · 10/10/2015 23:23

I don't drive, my eyesight is too bad, I have 2 young children and use buses, trains or my feet. My dh does drive but works away / long hours during the week so not a lot of help. Just something I deal with

MaidOfStars · 10/10/2015 23:39

A car is necessary for me. What's your point?

SrAssumpta · 11/10/2015 00:18

I hiked around happily on buses all my life until DD was 2, learning to drive was a longer road than I thought it would be but oh my god I'd honestly never be without a car now and we're serviced by great bus routes, both love to walk etc but use freedom and independence is priceless to me. Evening walks on the beach, any classes we fancy, last minute plans to visit friends, beautiful scenery off the beaten track just a short drive away in every direction (we're in Ireland) oh I just love it!

kawliga · 11/10/2015 08:48

I get that this is a thread about cars, but OP your friend needs a trolley to wheel his shopping in: www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/2874454.htm
