I have been offered a tempting 1 year FTC there. I have never been (yet).

fucking hell, thats some history. Obviously severalls and the workhouses all closed down many years ago, and intervening in fights is generally dangerous, and not a specific colchester problem. Glad he was rescued.

Not sure how colchester itself gave you a drug addiction? There are definitely drugs in colchester, as there are anywhere, but it takes more than that to make an addict.

It sounds like the place holds bad memories for you, but that doesnt make it a hellhole. Thats not "what happens" when you live in colchester.

LocalEditorEssex · 10/10/2015 15:46

I was born in Colchester, spent 20 years there and now live in a small town 20 mins from there.

I can give you good advice on areas and schools etc if you need me to.

Branleuse · 10/10/2015 15:46

Brightlingsea is nice. I wouldnt mind living there, but it wouldnt necessarily be the best idea for going back and from london.

Wivenhoe has a train station and you can get back to london only changing once at colchester, but if I were you, id look in town centre

LocalEditorEssex · 10/10/2015 15:47

whippet

My dad is in Lexden still.
It is generally a lovely town.

Whereabouts were you located?

Branleuse · 10/10/2015 15:49

this is gorgeous and central.

Moopsboopsmum · 10/10/2015 15:51

Hahaha! It's true, my bad memories are all personal, my family ran that town and it's nasty elements for many years. I'm sure it's a lovely place to live now. I own a gorgeous home in one of the many beautiful surrounding villages but I'm not sure I'll ever live there.

Branleuse · 10/10/2015 15:54

might be noisy on the weekend, but these new flats are supposed to be nice, and youre 10 mins walk from either station, and couldnt be more central)

(doesnt show inside, but thats a very desirable street, central, but not noisy, close to the arty bit and also pretty much next door to the park - bit of a middle class street, but in a nice way)

LunchpackOfNotreDame · 10/10/2015 17:21

I'd say rent in Wivenhoe or arlesford whilst you need the London train but move to Brightlingsea or Thorrington

XingXingFox · 10/10/2015 17:28

My family moved there when I was 11 and they all still live there, so go back regularly. Castle park is lovely but you are rarely going to find yourself there if you don't live in the town centre. The surrounding bits outside the centre like Lexden, Brightlingsea etc are pretty bland. There's only really bland high street shops and restaurants, I find it quite underwhelming, especially if you're used to London. Lots of Saturday night fights and drunks sprawled on the street. I do love Dedham though it pricey!

NorksAreMessy · 10/10/2015 17:31

OMG, this all takes me back.
I was at Colchester County High School For Girls about 100 years ago. We lived in one of the small villages, and I travelled in an hour every day on the bus for seven years.

Had several boyfriends in the Lexden area Blush.
All of this is history nearly as ancient as the castle (Castle Park very handy for romantic trysts) and of no use to you, but thank you for the memories

LumelaMme · 10/10/2015 17:47

the firstsite art gallery which imo is a bit shit and pretentious
Agreed.

The traffic situation is not fantastic (huge increase in population without commensurate change in the road network) but some good places to live, some excellent schools and some great open spaces. There are some good independent shops - a deli, a music shop, a craft/fabric shop.

RussianTea · 10/10/2015 18:50

Thanks all. I am catching up and making notes Smile

i think if youre coming from london, then places like alresford and thorrington are going to be a bit bleak and empty and very white, and thorrington is heading towards ukip-land is it not?
Brightlingsea is nice in the summer because of the beach and the outdoor swimming pool, and the colne high school is rated outstanding

autumnboys · 10/10/2015 19:05

We live in Colchester and are very happy, moved out of London to have our pfb. DH still commutes to London, so we live on Highwoods and he cycles down through the park.

Hospital has a bit of a dire reputation at the moment, but I have to say that I don't know anyone irl who's had a problem there. I like having the Uni and the barracks here, I think it gives the place a bit of bustle.

Topseyt · 10/10/2015 20:36

I am in Essex, though not in Colchester itself.

I've been there occasionally, and my employer's head office is there.

It isn't hell on earth. Moop's family's experience was unfortunate, but can happen anywhere.

It remains a garrison town, but I don't have the impression it is particularly rough. It has a great history, with the Norman Castle, and it was an important Roman town. It has easy links to London by train (or driving via the A12), and isn't far from the Essex coast either, as already mentioned (Clacton, Frinton, Walton-on-the-Naze etc.). It has a large Zoo out at Stanway, which my kids loved when they were small. DD3 is 13 now, and went there recently for the school reward trip.

I don't know much about it for night life and stuff like that, but as a town and a place to live I would think it has a fair bit going for it. Its drugs or other problems are no better or worse than they are in any other town. To suggest they are is bollocks. I live in a very small and rural town (more a large village really) and we have pockets of those here too.

Allice · 10/10/2015 20:39

I live there/here! I live in a village but it's still in Colchester. It fine, we moved about 11 years ago when our first child was on the way, I like it.
I work at a school in the town so if you need school advice should your job become permanent give me a shout.

I'd look to rent in the lexden area if you can, I love that area but sadly can't afford it although I work around there.

TattyDevine · 10/10/2015 20:54

I live in Colchester. We are very happy here.

Excellent schools, lovely villages, a rural feel but with plenty going on in town, traffic is not too bad, less than an hour into London, nice people, and definitely not rough, low crime, certainly in the part I'm in.

There's a nice feel that there is history. Its not terribly diverse, the vast majority of people are White and Christian (culturally rather than religiously if that makes sense).

The hospital has been in a spot of bother of late but like someone up thread said nobody I know has actually had a bad experience there, its more "bad on paper" I suppose (waiting times in A&E and that kind of thing).

Some nice parks and open areas, and nice things to do locally (I love walking from Dedham to Flatford Mill, that's a lovely walk) and quite near the coast so easy to go to the beach on a hot day or drive to nice places in Suffolk like Southwold or Aldeburgh and have fish and chips on the beach.

Some good Michelin starred restaurants.

Decent hair salons and beauty salons.

40 minutes on a train to Westfield Stratford for some serious retail therapy - just under an hour drive to places like Bluewater if you like big mall style shopping. Obviously the town centre is pretty comprehensive. We don't have Primark though - you'll need to go to Ipswich or Chelmsford for that!

There's a decent Fenwick department store called Williams and Griffin which is expanding in quite a major way (doubling in size at least) which will launch next summer (its open in the meantime though).

A really excellent gourmet food hall called The Food Company if you are a foodie. Lots of lovely farm shops and independent cafes attached to farms and rural places.

Great pubs.

Fairly good public transport mainly busses, and a new park and ride has opened recently.

3 McDonalds Grin

Quite a few decent takeaways which take credit cards.

Lots of development going on near the new Football stadium, which will include a whole lot of leisure facilities, and a big David Lloyd health club which is opening in a year or so. Apparently a cinema and lots of restaurants in that bit as well, which will perk up the north side a fair bit.

Good stuff for kids, including the leisure centre, which has an excellent leisure pool, and a place called Jump Street which is an indoor place where the floor is all trampolines and they just love it. Several quite good soft play places for little kids.

Its really on the Suffolk border and people speak quite well generally if that's relevant at all. Less happening job wise than perhaps a place like Chelmsford but sounds like you have a job sorted.

TattyDevine · 10/10/2015 20:58

Oh, and we have Waitrose Grin

Branleuse · 10/10/2015 21:16

the suffolk border thing makes it very different to a lot of peoples expections of stereotypical essex. It really is its own place

TattyDevine · 11/10/2015 09:25

Totally agree with that Branleuse
