To think that after the less than honest activities of Volkswagen, now is the time to consider buying cars made in Britain

There are lots of excellent cars assembled in Britain, e.g. Honda, Toyota,, providing much needed jobs in our manufacturing industry. Why buy a VW ?

Because they don't break down as often as other cars, they are good to drive and have a resonable shelf
Life

PinkCrocsSize5 · 07/10/2015 22:11

To be fair they are very reliable cars.

PolishRemoverOfNail · 07/10/2015 22:12

I'll always buy German cars, they are built to last and are far more reliable than English cars.

Trooperslane · 07/10/2015 22:13

Because all "British made" are definitely honest too?

Bad as each other. Bet you.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 07/10/2015 22:14

Assembled. Not really manufactured.
Petrol VWs are the same as ever. The testing process was always flawed for all cars.

IceCreamBandit · 07/10/2015 22:17

My husband's Vauxhall came from Spain.

I drive a (petrol) Skoda.

MaxieMouse · 07/10/2015 22:18

They are reliable, hold their value and keep going forever. Although I quite like Toyotas as well. I have never bought and never will buy a diesel though, regardless of who makes it.

ouryve · 07/10/2015 22:19

Toyotas are extremely reliable!

Salmotrutta · 07/10/2015 22:22

I seriously doubt that Volkswagon are/were the only car manufacturer fudging the emissions.

If the software exists I'm willing to bet we'll be hearing about other car companies faking their emissions very soon.

I'm sure they were talking about this on the radio a couple of days ago.

Palomb · 07/10/2015 22:22

Both our family cars are German. I expect our next set of family cars to be German cars. We like German cars which is why we don't have a Nissan or a Toyota sitting on the drive.

ouryve · 07/10/2015 22:25

Thinking this thread is ripe for a Dave Gorman "found poem".

TheFairyCaravan · 07/10/2015 22:26

I would imagine that it won't be long before most manufacturers admit to using similar software TBH.

TheFairyCaravan · 07/10/2015 22:28

Posted too soon

We've got 2 VWs btw and we would buy them again without doubt.

FatimaLovesBread · 07/10/2015 22:36

The most popular Toyota is the Corolla. They only make the auris and Avensis in the UK.
Vauxhall's is the Corsa but only the Astra is assembled in the UK

Limits choice somewhat

sunnyspot · 07/10/2015 22:39

I have a Honda Civic (assembled in Swindon). Cannot fault it.

Volkswagen is actually a load of unreliable shit, like every other German brand (Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche).

Japanese cars are FAR more reliable than Germans.

www.reliabilityindex.com/manufacturer - Germans at the bottom for warranty claims
www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/picturegalleries/9816454/Engine-reliability-the-top-10-brands.html - German brands have the least reliable engines

German cars often go fast, and look nice, and have nice interiors, but they are as unreliable as fuck.

Theoretician · 07/10/2015 22:44

I find this thread very funny, so many posts about VW's being reliable. I'm also on a US forum where cars are sometimes discussed, and German cars are considered rubbish for reliability, according to them people who want reliability should only consider Japanese cars.

Theoretician · 07/10/2015 22:45

As far as I'm aware, Japanese cars have been best for reliability since the 70's.

wasonthelist · 07/10/2015 22:46

There was no good reason to buy VW/Audi/Skoda/Seat (same cars different badges) before this, there still isn't, unless you are desparate to ensure your money doesn't go to British workers. I doubt we'll find Honda or Toyota falsifying their diesel emissions in the US as they weren't trying to sell diesel cars there.

Senpai · 07/10/2015 22:46

Pssh... Get the Japanese cars. They're cheaper and great on gas.

PinkCrocsSize5 · 07/10/2015 22:46

They haven't been unreliable for us and many other people so maybe it's down to people's individual experience - like I said they are reliable, or have been in the past for us.

I have an A Class now which I think is great.

Theoretician · 07/10/2015 22:49

I own a VW. I expect it to be reliable, but reliability wasn't a criterion when I was buying. I'd expect almost any new car from any major manufacturer to be reliable, unless I was very unlucky. I was even willing to buy a Range Rover, and I think they have the worst reputation of any major brand in the UK.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 07/10/2015 22:51

Both those articles are based on the findings of one particular warranty company. They could be comparing elderly VWs with 2 year old Toyotas on a tiny sample of cars.

Scremersford · 07/10/2015 22:54

RickRoll German cars often go fast, and look nice, and have nice interiors, but they are as unreliable as fuck.

That'll be why there are so many ancient and just plain 15 years plus Mercedes around which have done 200,000 plus miles (and often well in excess then).

wasonthelist · 07/10/2015 22:55

No one would need a third party warranty on a 2 year old Toyota. There's plenty of data. German cars aren't that reliable overall.
