I live where the body was found in the river. my mum was a dear friend of this man. he has not formally been identified.

AIBU to think that a cosy chat with the producer, with her telling us all about how her children found the body, is just in terrible taste?

the other people contributing to the show talked of finding bodies 'anonymously', which i understand was different.

aibu to think that focussing on some bbc employee's children is really inappropriate and shows poor judgement (with focus of the story and timing).

or is this is just news? maybe it's just never felt personal before. maybe my judgement is off as we're connected to it.

YABU for listening to that shite.

SpottyRedShoes · 07/10/2015 12:42

wow. thanks for that. what a gem you are.

Phone in and tell them. Yanbu

JohnCusacksWife · 07/10/2015 12:44

Sorry, I have no idea what story you're talking about so cant comment.

Sighing · 07/10/2015 12:45

I think it just highlights the completely inappropriate focus the media often have. JV is particularly keen to piss off all sides in any story from what I have gleaned. All about ratings maybe. Sorry that this is so close to home for you.

SpottyRedShoes · 07/10/2015 12:47

a local man has been missing for 3 months. he was found in the river by the producers' children. he hasn't been formally identified. he was mum's close friend. they've decided to do a feature on 'what its like to find a body as a child'. sorry i should've added it to my OP. i thought people would only reply to the thread if they'd just been listening to the radio.

Oh if only. People comment on AIBU sometimes even without reading the OP.

(I've not heard the show today but do listen to it. It's a bit hit and miss generally but that sounds particularly bad, not surprised you're annoyed.

scarlets · 07/10/2015 12:56

Missing for 3 months and recently found - that is too soon to be gossiping about it.

If they were talking to an adult who'd found a body as a kid several years ago, fair enough. That would be interesting, with no element of sensationalism.

Ohbollockstothem · 07/10/2015 13:00

he is an idiot

When operation stack was on he made such stupid comments , I thought my head would exploded

Not as bad as yours though

Lolimax · 07/10/2015 13:00

I heard it. I did think it seemed a bit recent to be talking about it and thought she shouldn't have described the location in any way.
I hope your mum is ok OP. Not a nice thing to have heard if you knew the gentleman concerned.

SpottyRedShoes · 07/10/2015 13:04

scarlets, thats its exactly my point. if they are focussing in a current news story, it needs to be ABOUT that story, not a spin off about someone who works in the office.

lolimax, i agree but i wondered if I'm being biased/ oversensitive but don't think i am.

i have emailed to complain.

OP posts:
mckenzie · 07/10/2015 13:11

I listened and even without any connection to the story, I thought it was a bit off.
I'm wondering if they just didn't have a better story lined up and so went with that one to fill the time. I'm not a fan of JV so I'm a tad biased but I do agree with you. The details were much too specific and what about the children concerned? i don't see how it can have anything but negative side effects for them.
My thoughts are with your mum and the man's family.

SpottyRedShoes · 07/10/2015 13:13

thank you mckenzie. i just hated the way that because the producer was involved, it became about her and her family, not about this poor man.

YANBU

I think Jeremy often uses situations he, his friends or colleagues are experiencing to whip up some section of his programme. In this example he has clearly not thought about any impact on those who might have known the man found.

IKnowIAmButWhatAreYou · 07/10/2015 13:30

In this example he has clearly not thought about any impact on those who might have known the man found.

Not quite sure what the "impact" is though? His body has been found, people know he's dead - they're not saying anything more than that are they?

If they're getting into details about the state of the body etc. then that's out of order, but surely it's no worse than the piece in the local rag will be next week...

Jeremy Vine is still shite though and YABU for listening to him....

Inkanta · 07/10/2015 13:39

Yes it's definitely inappropriate and insensitive to the relatives and all others' involved to discuss it at this time.

Jeremy Vine is a bit too cock sure for my liking.

mateysmum · 07/10/2015 13:53

Just happened to put JV on in the car and this article was on . I turned it off after a few minutes because it was just going on and on and not adding anything of interest - didn't realise it was the producer talking - but that could explain it. All seemed a bit pointless as a JV discussion topic.

I can see why OP and others that knew him would be upset.

BoomBoomsCousin · 07/10/2015 13:54

I think a piece on what it's like to find a body is probably a reasonable thing for a news light programme to cover. But the timing is attrocious and irresponsible.

laffymeal · 07/10/2015 15:52

I had to stop listening to this arsehole. I feared for my crockery and DAB radio as one or t'other was in danger of being hurled across the room in fury.

I have no doubt whatsoever YANBU. By all means complain but they'll probably ignore you.

Bring back Jimmy Young.

Maudofallhopefulness · 07/10/2015 16:08

Is that the body in Sussex? River Adur?

Prometheus · 07/10/2015 16:27

Agree. I found a dead body when I was 14 and listened to the programme but was in no way tempted to phone in, partly due to the minuscule chance that the family of the woman I found may be listening and be upset (even though the chances are minuscule).

GayByrne · 07/10/2015 17:31

YANBU op.

I also turned it off...didn't realise it was producer but it makes sense as they let her go on and fucking on about the kids and their responses etc.

I was thinking, "yeah, shame for you lady, but what about the poor fella in the water...?!".
