To think the Body Shop shouldn't be charging 5p for paper bags?

FatherReboolaConundrum · 05/10/2015 11:33

Went in to the Body Shop at the weekend and the tills had a sign saying that from today bags would cost 5p. Since they only use recycled paper bags, not the plastic bags that are covered by the new law, AIBU to think the Body Shop is being very cheeky indeed?

I have string bags and love them.

fulldutypaid · 05/10/2015 19:17

I don't want to take bags, thats who whole point of being given one to put my purchases in.

dementedpixie · 05/10/2015 19:19

Don't take one then but don't expect to get them for free any more!

KatharineClifton · 05/10/2015 19:20

You still have the option of being given a bag. You will obviously have to contribute 5p to charity in exchange. Hard times for you obvs Grin

HesterShaw · 05/10/2015 19:23

Iknow you have no idea where I live, but FYI I live somewhere extremely "nice", somewhere hundreds of thousands of people like you come on holiday every year, where loads of people tell me "You're so lucky to live down there". And we're sick of seeing people's polythene bags blowing around on the beaches and fishing them out of the sea and, for example, trying to catch seabirds so we can take them to the local bird hospital because they have become entangled in single use plastic like carrier bags. What a childish comment.

I can't understand why taking bags to carry your shopping in is such a big deal for some of you. And yes it does sound nobbish...if you want me to use an alternative adjective then how about "pathetic"? People who are so obsessed with their "rights" as consumers they don't give a flying fuck about anything else. You may well recycle your carrier bags (round of applause) but millions don't. Recycling of single use plastic never works as much as they claim it does anyway (because the material degrades during the process and isn't as good second time round), so the first thing to do is reduce and reuse. I have yet to hear a convincing argument as to why this is so difficult. It has been tried for years to get people to reuse bags voluntarily and most can't be bothered. How else is it to be achieved other than by charging? (not that 5p is enough - it should be 50p).

How do you suppose your grandparents managed? How do you think people in other countries do so? Bet they're looking at the whining fuss people are making in England and thinking they are even more ridiculous than ever. Even some of the States are banning single use carrier bags.

lifesalongsong · 05/10/2015 19:37

You sound very selfish fulldutypaid, I hope the bag charge will eventually change attitudes like yours.

Moln · 05/10/2015 19:38

The Body Shop don't refill bottles anymore? What the heck!!!!!!

honeyroar · 05/10/2015 19:50

Well you're just going to have to get over it FullDuty, that's how it is now.. Whether you want to or not, you have to buy or take bags, they're no longer free.

I live in a lovely area too, and one of the consequences of that is people visit and leave rubbish. It's pants. Rubbish is not confined to not nice areas.

This thread is well timed, I'm in California for a few days and would have forgotten my fold up bags and had to pay for them!

fulldutypaid · 05/10/2015 19:53

I sound selfish Grin I just don't like living in what's becoming a "nanny state".

Im not sitting here frothing honeyroar either so don't tell what to get over and not to get over, very pious of you indeed.

honeyroar · 05/10/2015 19:57

You do sound like you're frothing! If you post things people will reply to them!

fulldutypaid · 05/10/2015 19:59

Thats fine honeyroar, just stating my opinion, calm down Grin

londonrach · 05/10/2015 20:03

I didnt realise people still shopped at the body shop (misses point of post)

honeyroar · 05/10/2015 20:03

Well I wasn't being pious. You do have to get over it if they're charging, we all do, that's a fact.. I liked the free bags now and again, I used them as bins in the cars, but I just have to get used to it that they're not free anymore.

fulldutypaid · 05/10/2015 20:08

Not sure I ever said I wasn't going to "get over it" honey so you were being pious. I said I disagree with it.

honeyroar · 05/10/2015 20:09

Oh I give up, I'll leave you to your froth!

fulldutypaid · 05/10/2015 20:11

Think twice before you tell people to get over themselves though ay, its rude.

honeyroar · 05/10/2015 20:15

I didn't! I told you to get over it, as in the bag issue, not yourself. Although I'm certainly thinking that now, sorry!

BikeRunSki · 05/10/2015 20:15

"when will we realise we need to stop consuming so much?"

Exactly. People need to realise that when you throw something away, there is no "away". All school children should go on a field trip to landfill site when they are old enough to understand what it's about.,

My local authority ran out of landfill space years ago and now incinerated a lot of waste, and uses this to heat some public buildings. Waste to power is brilliant, but there are still air quality issues associated with mass incineration.

Single use carrier bags (paper or are unecessary. The manufacture and transport of anything has an environmental impact, however recyclable that product is.

fulldutypaid · 05/10/2015 20:18

when will people realise that its the large companies who package their goods in so much plastic that need to find a bio degradable solution. Putting a levy on joe public is wrong.

Helenluvsrob · 05/10/2015 20:31

I can't see the fuss. A few holidays in France and the arrival of a local Aldi converted me at least 10yrs ago. I always have a bag in my bag ( a huge but teeny when packed ultrasil one) and a motley collection of bags in the car.

A few weeks and people will have the habit.

I shall have to think ahead a bit when going clothes shopping though. The bigger bags are more of a challenge.

Waiting for the take your own bags to weigh loose fruit and veg into though. That'd be good.

Nonnainglese · 05/10/2015 20:42

I'm taking great delight in using competitors' bags in supermarkets Smile
Miserable woman on checkout in Sainsburys didn't like it at all. She was even less pleased when I ripped open packet of bin liners to put new jumper in!

lifesalongsong · 05/10/2015 20:47

I don't think a compulsory charge is going to apply to clothes shops, the bags they use tend to be thinker than the maximum set by the legislation or so I've read. It's mainly for supermarkets at the moment isn't it?

I've heard people on the radio talking about using the bags from one place in another, I don't understand what's good about that - the supermarket isn't benefitting from the 5p so why would they care where your bags come from and surely no individual cashier is going to give two hoots if they even notice.

verystressedmum · 05/10/2015 20:52

We get free bags from McDonald's. And I thought bags for hot food was except as I always get one but they're not allowed to put any other shopping into it.

fulldutypaid · 05/10/2015 21:57

See how ludicrous this is Grin I purchase something, give me a damn bag!

MissBattleaxe · 05/10/2015 21:57

Putting a levy on joe public is wrong- oh come on - it's not a fine- it's 5p a bag or take your own!
