To think that £17,000 a year on food is obscene

ChillySundays · 02/10/2015 20:22

Watching 'Eat well for less' on i player. The family are spending £17,000 a year on food. I'd quite like to earn that. The bloke is saying about saving them £100 a week - my food bill is that a week (4 adults) never mind saving it.

What is really getting my goat is the mother laughing about how little fruit and veg the family eat. Surely most people would be embarrassed whatever the reason was.

Am I being incredibly judgey?

To be honest one of the friends coming for lunch prefers rose champagne so almost half of it was for a decent bottle of rosé champagne, so probably only £200 ish for some food.
Although we normally get meat/charcuterie/fish/vegetables from a different place especially if we are entertaining so on that list is just food for most of the week not including a large meal for tomorrow.
Also a bottle of grey goose which was £30 something.

Fluffycloudland77 · 03/10/2015 19:49

Where the hell are you buying wine from the tank ffs? why havent any of you asked the important question.

We need the address of the vineyard!.

CatMilkMan · 03/10/2015 19:50

"Do you get bored with it, catmilkman? I imagine if you could gratify every desire each week, the novelty would wear off?"

I don't really think about it until it comes up on mumsnet, only reason I'm posting is because so many posters didn't seem to think it's possible.
I will happily pay a premium for well sourced food that is consistent, I have never had an unripe avocado or tomato from natoora.
And the thing about gratification is I get gratification from eating amazing food but mainly seeing other people experiencing it.
I made a slow cooker stroganoff with cheap cuts of meat for 8 people and it was awesome, we had a great time.
Tomorrow I'm spending hundreds of pounds on a meal for 6 and it's going to be just as awesome, maybe more so since its extravagant and rare for some people.

gamerchick · 03/10/2015 19:54

Man you look after your pals Grin

See now my brain is boggling less. Thankyou for that!

200 I can understand... Somewhat. Not weekly (unless you entertain a lot?) bit easier to get the head around than 400.

CatMilkMan · 03/10/2015 19:54

I'm sorry if I'm not making a huge amount of sense I'm literally shaking about the anticipation of the rugby game, going to have to leave the thread now. I'll think about posting a full receipt.

Grazia1984 · 03/10/2015 19:55

I just spent£84 for one son and I at Waitrose and yesterday the Tesco deliveyr came which was about £95. If you don't need to worry about price then it's not that hard to get to £200 a week. One of the nice things about being wise about career choose for women and working full time. We all make choices in life and have to live with the consequences.

ragged · 03/10/2015 19:55

I'd like to see the receipts of high spenders, too.
Do you really not throw a lot out, too?
I suspect you eat things I've no interest in, but just curious!

Beth2511 · 03/10/2015 19:59

My nesting, night before the baby arrived, shop only came to £130.

We do £50-60 a week!

ChillySundays · 03/10/2015 19:59

Wow - I have been out all day and can't believe how many posts. Will be having a read now while eyeing up the rugby players on tv

This is the Waitrose one from today if the scan has worked.I think it is £64 not 84. Cannot read it very well and I am very sorry but whichever is fine and I absolutely am aware that many many people have a lot less money and couldn't imagine a situation where you wouldn't look at the price and wouldn't care if it were £20 more or not.

Grazia1984 · 03/10/2015 20:08

I obviously haven't mastered uploads as that's too small to read. Oops.

DisappointedOne · 03/10/2015 20:11

Ewwwww. Don't buy Pantene! It will destroy your hair!

Grazia1984 · 03/10/2015 20:13

Other people's shoppoing is always fascinating and I don't mind being people's guinea pig. My hair is pretty good actually.

Although if I were Pantene I might not like illegal libellous comments but that's a separate topic. I'm not their lawyer.

Garrick · 03/10/2015 20:14

Ragged - These days I'm grateful for unhappy hens and formed ham, but my diet isn't "worse" than when I spent 20 times as much or more. The two big differences are quality and variety. In days of old, I would never buy fresh ingredients that weren't ethical - nearly everything was both free-range and organic, in most cases from named suppliers. Almost everything I ate was exciting, whereas now it's a notable event when something really thrills me. I can't just think 'I haven't had duck for ages, that one looks nice', or 'beef wellington would be perfect for a cold night like this.' My diet now is all a bit samey by comparison.

Hell has yet to freeze hard enough for me to make a pasta bake, however Wink

Bumdance · 03/10/2015 20:20

Organic meat and eggs, fresh berries (seasonal), herbs, organic dairy with some fancy cheeses, lots of veg... I doubt I could get to £325 but I reckon I could spend far more than lots of people consider reasonable. Love a bit of fillet steak! I like good food, am concerned about farming methods, enjoy cooking etc.

I can't get too excited about what other people spend and tend to think if you can afford it and aren't wasting it, crack on. There are invariably things I consider a monumental waste of money that other people see as necessary/good value. Swings and roundabouts really.

trufflehunterthebadger · 03/10/2015 20:21

it's really common in wine growing areas in France, last trip was to the Loire Valley. we got it in a "cave" in a small town - Loudun. if you go to the new Centerparcs in Les Trois Moutiers be sure to visit the Cave des Vins in Loudun ! we will be going again in Feb half term to restock :)

I have my own hens which I feed organic layer pellets (£4 from the agricultural wholesalers)
I gave my neighbour a dozen. She acted like she'd won the lottery :o are they really that expensive now?

She gave me a huge gourd and a bag full of eating apples :)

Owllady · 03/10/2015 20:31

A dozen eggs I mean Confused

ChinaSorrows · 03/10/2015 20:32

This evening I popped to Tesco for wine and dinner. All for me. I'm aaaall alone!
I spent £48
On 2 bottles of wine
A bottle of Bombay
Various ready foods
Cola
Nuts.

Without meal planning I would easily be able to spend silly money.

DisappointedOne · 03/10/2015 20:32

My hair is pretty good actually.

Might look alright, but if you're using any sort of heat on it it's slowly turning your hair to plastic.

ChillySundays · 03/10/2015 20:39

Great reading - thanks.

AndNowItsSeven I have tried a rice cooker and still cocked up!

I struggle with rice and that's it. My family like the different flavoured ones and since I am careful with other things it is not the end of the world.

AS someone who didn't do home economics at school I am not sure ignorance is an excuse for not cooking. When I lived on my own it was a case of an awful lot of beans or cheese on toast but once I had a family I wanted to cook proper food healthy food for them.

see, we eat all those things (berries, duck, lamb, scallops) etc - but i only buy when they are heavily reduced. food has to fit one of the following factors

  1. free with a coupon/gift/homegrown
  2. over 50% off
  3. great offer eg Lidl half price weekend
  4. if none of the above it has to be essential eg. flour and then i will get whatever offers best value. i am not remotely brand or store loyal. the only thing i won't compromse on is rice krispies and cornflakes as dd and dh really notice the difference despite many attempts to fool them

we eat very well on my budget (£300 per month for 4 adults and 1 child, 3 cats and laundry/cleaning/loo roll) because i am dedicated to getting as mch for my money as i can. if you eat fillet steak every day then it is never a treat. i have worked in 5* hotels and michelin restaurants where luxury ingredients were everyday goods but i refuse to believe that you need to spend a fortune on food to eat well
