To think that Vodafone are absolutely disgusting - blood pressure is soaring this morning!

I have had contracts with Vodafone for over 3 years now and all was fine until May. In March I got an unsolicited call from them offering me a 'reward' of a heavily discounted tablet with a 4g data plan for £17 a month as I was such a valued customer. I accepted as I thought DC could use it.

It was actually not used until May. Roll on the end of May and I get a bill (bill recieved online 1 day before it was due to come out of my account) with an extra £170 of data charges on it. On checking my usage there an already an extra £50 of data charges on the next months bill so £260 including VAT.

It turns out that I was being charged for 4g data roaming when I thought I was connected to my home wifi. £20 a day. I immediately disputed it but they insisted the charges would stand.

I have now taken my complaint to the telephone Ombudsman and awaiting their investigation all the while paying my normal contract rate over the phone every month. Every month Vodafone restrict my lines and it takes at leadt 4 to 5 calls to get explain again that I am disputing the data charges before they unrestrict them. I have been called a liar and been told that I am a problem customer because I wont just cough up and hand over enough money to feed my family for 2 weeks for a service I did not use.

Last month my phone was stolen. Within 30 minutes of me realising it was not in my bag, 3 calls had been made to Zimbabwe costing £50. At the time, I thought I may have left it at home but when I couldnt find it, I immediately contacted Vodafone to block it. When I rang them the next day to ask them to send me a new Sim because Id searched everywhere and couldnt find it, I found out about the calls and thats when I realised that someone must have taken it out of my bag although I cant understand how! Vodafone said that they would cancel the charges and later sent a text to my DSs phone which I was using confirming they had done so. I had a new Sim sent out but it took 2 weeks to get it activated as they wouldnt do it until I had paid the previously disputed bill. Eventually after about a zillion calls, they agreed to put the disputed amount on hold until the Ombudsman had investigated my complaint.

Got my bill yesterday and the charges were still on there. Told today that I had to pay it as they have no proof (have crime reference and never made international calls before) that I did not make the calls and that's that so I have but they still wont unrestrict my phone lines until I have paid the £261. Ombudsman will take another 3/4 weeks to complete their investigation so DC have no phones to contact me on their way to/from school and I suffer from anxiety anyway so need to know they are OK.

Im going to have to pay the bastards with money I have not got aren't I? I am steaming! Also furious I have paid for the scum who nicked my phone to ring home and have lost hundreds of pictures of the DC and all my contacts as well.

I think you'll end up having to pay the 4g charges - as far as Vodafone are concerned you used the mobile data instead of wifi and it's really not their fault the tablet wasn't set up correctly.

As for the stolen phone, you'll need to resubmit the crime ref no etc, and do everything in writing so there's a paper trail.

Can't you use PAYG in the meantime until the dispute has been resolved?
I've never had a phone contract (20+yrs) as they're too expensive.
When I was in the UK, I used giffgaff as it's very cheap but excellent value.

Can you contact the Ombudsman and inform them that Vodafone are pressuring you each and every month regarding the bill even though they are aware the matter is in dispute and under investigation by the Ombudsman.

If you did pay it and the case was found in your favour I presume Vodafone would have to pay you back.

Document all this hassle and add it to your complaint.

emotionsecho · 01/10/2015 12:59

I second Fluffy, either get a PAYG or another phone with another provider until the case is settled.

Vodafone are an incompetent bunch of rip-off merchants. Fact.

I had a phone with them on a rolling contract. I could never seem to log into my account to pay the damn bill, so I would have to call them up every damn time.

It turns out they had me down as a business customer and were adding VAT charges to my bill for two bloody years. It took two years for me to get to the bottom of this and it still hasn't been resolved. In fact, I cancelled my rolling contract with them and they are trying to bill me £400 for cancelling before my contract has ended. Confused

They are the worst.

I don't really have any advice to give you but I do wish you luck with your claim against them.

They are currently after me for £1600 as my ex partner wouldn't give a phone back that I had in his name.
It was a DV case too, I tried to speak to them and they were not helpful or sympathetic. It is currently sitting with the ombudsman, I suggest you do the same.

Hotpatootietimewarp · 01/10/2015 16:26

Yep total knobs!

I still have an ongoing dispute from 7 years ago with them Shock for bills that were expensive and no explanation for why!

SheSparkles · 01/10/2015 16:43

I hate to be the voice of doom but I can't see the ombudsman ruling in your favour...you used the data you've been charged for, your failure to connect (and check you were connected ) to your wifi is hardly Vodafone's fault
I presume that they're not charging you for any calls from when you reported the phone stolen, that's standard practice across the phone industry. That you've not made international calls in the past does not prove (to Vodafone, I don't disbelieve you) that you didn't make them. I had never made international calls before, until I made the first one, but before I did, I made sure that I had an international bar in my phone, so that if it had been stolen, what happened with your phone couldn't happen with mine.
Sometimes you have to take responsibility and learn from your mistakes-I've made plenty in my life, so please don't think I'm being a smart ass!
