To ask you to tell me how you make voice calls using wifi

Posting here as I can't work out where else to try.

My knowledge of technology is pretty basic but, as I spend a lot of time overseas and mobile to mobile calls are costing a fortune, I'd like to use wifi to make voice calls but when I've googled it I'm totally confused!

Ideally I'd like to use my iPad (air not 3G) to make calls but don't know if that's possible. If not I have an iPhone 4 and the people I'd call have an iPhone 5 or 6.

Which is the best/ easiest app to use?

My only requirements are it makes voice calls for free and the receiving person knows when I'm calling.

Please help!

You can set FaceTime so it can't be used with 3G/4G ie will only work on wifi. On my iPhone 6 8.3 you do this by going into the settings, Cellular, then scroll down to the list of apps, for each app you can choose whether to allow cellular data ie 3G/4G to be used; if no then it will only work on wifi

When you go to stay abroad, make sure to ask the hotel or the people you're staying with to get you connected to the wifi, assuming they have it!

It doesn't seem to work on an iPhone 4 (FaceTime isn't in the list) but just checked DHs iphone 5 and that does have the option so it's perfect.

I do use hotel wifi all the time for emailing/ Internet browsing so I should be good to go with calling now too- thanks to all of you who've helped.

I seem to remember on previous iPhone the option was in a different place - is there a FaceTime section on the main settings menu?

There is a FaceTime option in the main settings section ceevee but the only option within that seems to be turning on or off entirely.

It's fine though as I'll be using my iPad to call and everyone I'm calling has a better phone than me so can turn it to wifi only
