To teach my daughter what a turtle says

Our daughter is nearly 2 and learning what animals say - moo, baa, neigh etc.

I wanted to teach her what a turtle says but have got no idea (don't think they say anything) so i told her a turtle says "hello" in a funny voice.

Now when i say "What does a turtle say?" She says "Hello!" in a funny voice and waves.

My wife thinks it's cruel to teach her something that isn't true. I think it's harmless, funny and cute, and that she's taught much more bollocks by In the Night Garden etc.

What's the mumsnet verdict?

I tried to teach DD (18 months) to make a noise like a goat: "mehhhhhhh". Unfortunately her interpretation is a bloodcurdling screech Blush

DH has also taught her to say "monkey" in the style of Johnny Vegas in the tea bag adverts Hmm. It is rather cute though Grin

Penguins say "Peck your tummy!" (chosen before we lived near a zoo and discovered that penguins actually make a rather endearing throaty cooing sound), and kangaroos make a sort of kissing sound (taken from a video clip of some kangaroos although we weren't actually sure whether the noise was the kangaroos or the wind).

I have a tortoise and two turtles and can report that they 'huff' - only when annoyed though! I wish they did say hello......

"What does a camel say?"
"Kapowww!"
Nope, not a scoobie why.

And cuddly camel was then Kapow the Camel.

Giraffes are not silent.

They are often very quiet and don't say much. But they can and do make a bleating noise. Sometimes adults make a louder version of these noise.

What about zèbras? I had to YouTube them to hear what noise they made to satisfy DD's thirst for accurate knowledge. Good luck imitating them!

In this house Kangaroos say "Boing!" As DD gets older I may attempt to teach her a Skippy-style twittering impression Wink
