to wonder how the fuck you get an 8 month old to take antibiotics? (lighthearted - kind of)

Chesty cough won't shift so we've been prescribed an antibiotic

3 doses in and she's probably spat out half the medicine? I am syringing into her cheek, have her laying down and feed immediately after.

Is there an actual technique? Do I need more medicine as she is wasting it?

Older DC has only ever had antibiotics once and liked the taste so took it willingly.

Cover it up with something else...bit of food/puree on top? Thats what i used to do

PuntasticUsername · 28/09/2015 20:03

Yep, syringe into the cheek as you are doing, then blow sharply into her face - she will reflexively swallow (then, if she's like DS2, look at you as if to say "you caaaaaah!").

Prettyeyedpiratesmile · 28/09/2015 20:06

With my son I squirted medicine in quickly or would sometimes give him it when he was asleep as he would suck on the syringe without any fuss

LemonPied · 28/09/2015 20:07

Syringe and blow or syringe and bottle/boob/dummy popped in straight away.

SometimesItRains · 28/09/2015 20:08

We've hidden medicine in yoghurt before, all the sugar can usually hide the taste of the medicine.

TeamBacon · 28/09/2015 20:09

Ours got mixed into yoghurt or pureed fruit

sproketmx · 28/09/2015 20:22

Does she take a dummy? If so dentinox do a fab one you can load with antibiotics, calpol, neurofen, anything. I still use it for my 1 and 2 year olds

Welshmaenad · 28/09/2015 21:24

Is it the pink one?

If so, good luck!

SaltaKatten · 28/09/2015 21:27

My youngest would projectile vomit antibiotics and as she had bad exzema that would get infected, she was prescribed it often. The best method we found was to mix it with squash or similar and freeze it into ice pops.

goawayalready · 28/09/2015 21:28

my middle son would dream feed antibiotics so instead of daytime he had them nighttime or the syringe and blow method works well too

Elisheva · 28/09/2015 21:34

Get large towel or blanket and wrap her in it. Lay her on sofa, gently squidge her cheeks together, pop syringe in and squirt medicine into her cheek. Hold until she has swallowed. Takes 10 seconds when you get the hang of it.

steff13 · 28/09/2015 21:36

This worked for all three of ours. Works for dogs, too.

MissDexter · 28/09/2015 21:41

Medicine dummy?

Groovee · 28/09/2015 21:52

Syringe was how we got ds! I had a technique on how to hold him and get the syringe in! I was a horrible cow.

Isn't that the recommendation for a cat? Grin

Sugarandsalt · 28/09/2015 23:35

My DD has been on (aniseed flavoured) antibiotics since birth. Syringe and blow worked until about 6 months for us. Then several months of pinning her down and squirting it in, when suddenly at a year she decided she liked the taste. If your DD accepts a spoon (mine wouldn't) I would give it with something sweet.

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 28/09/2015 23:35

Another vote for medicine dummy. Or hiding it in yoghurt.

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 28/09/2015 23:38

Catsflap, that's only a small part of the suggestion for cats.

For cats...

Locate cat
Secure cat in one room
Load syringe/tablet
Remove cat from curtains
Clean cuts on hands, apply plasters.
Remove cat from curtains again.
Put meds near cat mouth
Deal with gashes on legs...

This worked for all of mine

toffeeboffin · 29/09/2015 02:42

Jesus, when DS has antibiotics it takes both me and DH to pin him down and to manage to squeeze it into his mouth. And that is mighty difficult as DS wriggles like an anaconda!

We tried hiding it in stuff etc. Not gonna happen. He does prefer the pink over the banana line, however.

Good lkuick, OP.

Senpai · 29/09/2015 03:13

I have to do it bit by bit with DD, so if she does spit some out, it's not all of it. I do it as far back in her cheek as it can go and point it at her cheek. She then reflexively has to swallow as it's so far back she can't spit it out except when she can.

Graciescotland · 29/09/2015 05:18

Nightmare I found the banana one (amoxicillan) much easier.

TheCrowFromBelow · 29/09/2015 05:40

The antibiotic ice pop sounds genius but I think I'd worry that it would stop the ABs working, aren't they meant to be a certain temperature?

I found that tucking them in close to me then syringe in the cheek, towards the back, and shove in the dummy or bottle was best. I could do this on my own as well to keep to the schedule.

Hope your DD gets well soon OP.

malin1 · 29/09/2015 05:52

we had an au pair who used to get a spoon, gently pinch the baby's nose, stick the spoon in the mouth and tilt. All done in 10 seconds.

It worked and it was amazing to watch. (But i couldn't do it)
