to think help with losing weight should be based on clinical need not on eligibility for free prescriptions

So My bmi is 38. I have recently bern diagnosed with a condition ehich is likely to need surgery. My gp has advised me thst they may not be happy with my weight. Well neither am I. So I asked for some support with losing weight. I was expecting to be offered regular weigh in with a HCA. Instead I was told by the receptionist that they now do a Slimming World Referral. Even better I thought until I discovered thst I do not qualify as I am not in receipt of free prescriptions. Now I get it is fair to offer to those less abke to psy but it is slso provided for people eith a medical exemption. well both my dh and I have long term conditions which require us to pay for prescriptions. If we had different conitions they would be free and I would be entitled to support losing weight.
Now I do already have a gym membership and I am trying to diet but could really use some extra help. I am an emotional eater and reslly need regiment of a weigh in to help.
Aibu to be upset no support is available when there is a clesr clinical need.

Ive lost 10 stone on slimming world. I dont go for their low syn ideas though because so called low syn foods are full of sugar. And then when you go on the maintenance plan you take in a little more and along with the so called low syn but high sugar products of course the weight comes back on.

But ive got their number [winks] And as for saying slimming world is not expensive......well i regained 4 stone after becoming my husbands carer. Its taken me the last 2 years to lose the 4 stone regain. Because funnily enough i couldnt afford to do it when we were living on £40 a week which had to include food prescriptions AND hospital parking.

And if the NHS is so fucking bothered then why dont they admit they got it wrong about fat. I can eat a bit of fat and still lose weight but so called low fat high sugar products ......NO. Which is why i never touch mullerlight yoghurts or their bloody hifi bars.

"And then when you go on the maintenance plan you take in a little more and along with the so called low syn but high sugar products of course the weight comes back on."

You're supposed to add in more healthy extras, not syns.

It's also entirely up to you whether you eat muller lights , plain yoghurt or don't eat yoghurt at all because it's the work of the devil, lol.

I did add in more healthy extras But a lot of them still contain too much sugar. I dont count syns I just keep my sugar intake as low as possible.

e.g. sainsburys fat free greek yoghurt 13g sugar per 100g
sainsburys full fat greek yoghurt 5g of sugar per 100g.

I have the second option and eat a smaller portion. Works for me.

tabulahrasa · 30/09/2015 18:51

The healthy extras don't contain any sugar unless you're talking about cereal and even then it's only some of those - oh and I suppose Wholemeal bread must have some in, but porridge oats, nuts, milk, cheese and all the rest of the things like that don't.

The choosing between yoghurts thing is exactly what it's supposed to do, you have to choose between low calorie or a smaller amount of higher calorie things...it's entirely up to you whether you're happy to have one or the other, or something else entirely - that is how it's supposed to work. It's designed to give you choice, but still keep your calorie intake low.

I could eat on plan fine and have nothing but food I've made myself from raw ingredients, or have nothing but synthetic substitutes, or a mix of both - but they'd all still be on plan and control my calorie intake.

HelenaDove · 30/09/2015 19:11

Something could be low in calories but high in sugar. I keep my weight off by keeping my sugar intake low. I dont eat bread at all because even a tiny amount makes me gain.

People are individual and the trouble with this is that it treats ppl like we are all the same.

The hifi bars are classed as healthy extras but are still high in sugar.

Lemith · 01/10/2015 08:26

Potatoes and pasta are healthy unlimited foods on sw?

Sounds like the shit ww do, no foods a sin so you can eat three Pringles. No one can just eat three Pringles they have been designed in a lab to be highly addictive, its even their slogan.

tabulahrasa · 01/10/2015 08:47

Yep, pasta, potatoes, rice, fruit, veg, lean meat, fish, pulses, eggs, fat free dairy produce and things like quorn and soya are unlimited.

So yes - the portion size for things like Pringles is a bit Hmm but you can have meals fine - it is things like Pringles, cake or chocolate that you're having to be stricter about.

WorktoLive · 01/10/2015 09:52

Potatoes and pasta are unlimited on Slimming World, but you are supposed to make a third of the volume of each meal vegetables or salad (or fresh fruit if you like) and put the other stuff on after that - so a jacket potato on its own wouldn't really count - you should have a smaller jacket potato and some salad.

You're also supposed to eat until you are comfortably full, not stuffed and snacks are supposed to be fruit or vegetables (or the measured counted junky stuff within the allowance) not a bowl of pasta for example. I think the free foods is more about not having to count and measure every single thing that you eat and not having to worry about being hungry - there is always something you can eat. Unfortunately, some people take the 'unlimited' aspect as a free pass to stuff themselves from morning till night and unsurprisingly, these are the ones that Slimming World often doesn't work too well for.

The daily allowance for treats is about 200 calories - this would allow a glass of wine or a small chocolate bar, or about a quarter of a big tube of pringles - considerably more than 3, but admittedly a big fight against 'once you pop, you can't stop'.
