AIBU not to volunteer at NCT sale again?

Local NCT sale last week, I've volunteered for a couple of years now as it does mean you get in before the mad rush and weirdly I enjoy the day (I know Blush).

The lady who ran the local branch until recently was very methodical about the whole thing - volunteers got to shop early but we worked hard for that and it was rare for the sale to have hiccups etc. Then she retired last year and the sale is now run jointly between members of the committee.

It's now turned into a bit of a farce. The committee firstly decided that committee members could shop before volunteers arrive (which has meant a lot of the 'good stuff' is long gone we get a look in) but when someone asked why that was they were told 'because committee members dedicate more time than volunteers', which is true I guess.

But at the sale last week I noticed that the committee members were putting in the bare minimum of help with setting up, mostly they were sat around chatting and eating snacks while the volunteers did most of the work. I know they do work behind the scenes but still...they're having problems recruiting volunteers and I'm not surprised really. Its a shame as I usually have a laugh while helping but I just found it irritating. The lack of help from committee standing around meant we massively overran at the end and had to get sellers to help pack up their unsold items.

AIBU not to volunteer again? Anyone else seen this 'committee has first dibs' policy with NCT?

(Before anyone tells me to go on committee myself I'm a single parent who works full time and struggle to volunteer for the sales, I'm in no position to dedicate more time Wink).

It's hard to tell whether the committee members are being U about getting first dibs without knowing exactly what they do in general. But I don't think you should feel any obligation to volunteer if you're not happy with how it's managed.

I've never heard of the committee goes first thing - sounds very entitled.

I stopped doing NCT sales last year as I found the sale day itself became a Platform for women to outdo themselves on who could be the most tyrannical bitch to one another.

Im hoping that is is a bad committee year & hopefully yours will get back to normal next year too.

Sad truth is I actually enjoy helping and not just for the bargains (lack of a social life here!). I just find it disappointing when people don't pull their weight. We've already been told that sellers will be getting their payments later than normal due to the lack of volunteers on the day so 'less time' for the committee member who deals with payments to pull everything together.

Move on to doing your own boot fairs ( you can at some fairs get a look in 1st)
Or do school fair and fetes again helper can get 1st look.
Or start arranging your own table top sales .

It's decades since I was in NCT. We switched from 'jumble sale' type sales to car boot sale' types. That way, the pressure is off the committee & other volunteers as the sellers have to bring, display, sell, and pack up all their own stuff, while the branch gets guaranteed income, ie the £10 per table or whatever. Committee members were there to support, do teas and coffees, sell raffle tickets etc.

I can understand why you are annoyed.

The only thing I can think of is that they were really struggling to fill committee positions and have used shopping first as a carrot.

YANBU this does not sound right nicknameidea. Can you pm me, I might be able to help.

I'd suggest you try contacting someone like the Committee Chair and explaining politely why in your view the sale didn't work this year in contrast to previous years, and suggesting that they really need just one or two people to organise it and recruit an adequate number of volunteers. Next time they have a sale, if they're still running it the same way you would certainly be justified in refusing to volunteer. You might like to have a look at helping out occasionally in a charity shop if you enjoy that sort of thing.

It seems you were mainly volunteering for access to the 'good stuff'. Now that's dried up perhaps it is time to move on to more profitable pastures?
