I dont mean the more sturdy ones can you pay 5-6p for when you use a checkout that has a human operator who smiles and is polite. But the self service bags are rubbish.Sometimes when there's a big cue and it takes me ages to even open the bag so I can start scanning things through, I start to get anxious and feel myself blushing- sometimes, on bad days, I worry that the people still queuing must be giving me dagger eyes. Its been going on for years but supermarkets still haven't fixed this. Why?

We are giving you dagger eyes. HTH Grin

YABU. Take your own bags, don't you have to pay for the carrier bags?

TheExMotherInLaw · 26/09/2015 15:38

If you live in England, then come 15 October you will have to pay for carrier bags, as large shops will not be allowed to give them away. Time to get into the habit of taking your own!

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 26/09/2015 15:48

They have deliberately made them thinner recently, to encourage you to buy a decent one...

Tesco admitted this!

gamerchick · 26/09/2015 15:53

When you have to pay all the free crappy ones are being destroyed and the bags will be better quality apparently.

BlueJug · 26/09/2015 15:59

Bring your own bag. Buy couple of easy fold up nylon bags - these at IKEA are fine and cheap. Have them in each handbag and you always have them handy. Easy. No damage to environment. No litter . No waste. Stronger - can even carry bottle of wine - and no daggers

I totally missed that on the news- I'm glad they are in trouble then.
For similar reasons do they also instruct the attendants to not do anything to make it easier such as going round to each machine an loosen in up a few bags to help people like me and people with arthritis.?

Our tesco has new bags, they are proper thick carrier bags like they used to be. I assume they are in advance of the charge so you are at least getting a half decent bag for your 5p

IceCreamBandit · 26/09/2015 16:15

Queue, not cue (signal to do something.)

I find even the bags for life are rubbish lately. I'm slowly adding to my collection of jute bags- I really want to try the storage box/crate idea too.

TheExMotherInLaw · 26/09/2015 16:16

Plus about 2p per bag will be going to local charities, who can apply to be recipients of the scheme.

MissFitt68 · 26/09/2015 17:38

Sorry?? You expect someone to open the bag for you,as well?

Take your own bags

tobysmum77 · 26/09/2015 17:50

I think there is a weird obsession with putting everything into bags anyway. It's a right faff unless you've got lots off really small items or need to walk home

viciousknid · 26/09/2015 19:44

you want someone to walk around pre-opening the bags for you?! Grin

hels71 · 26/09/2015 19:50

The problem with having your own bag at those self service check outs is that it has to be empty before you start or the machine can't cope....or at least it does in our Morrisons. Such a pain....you have to take all your previous shopping out before you can start.

LittleMissStubborn · 26/09/2015 19:56

I agree they can be difficult to open, but as of the 5th October (not the 15th) you will be paying for them so take your own and problem solved.

Warriorsoftheworld · 06/10/2015 01:43

The only problem i have with the bag charge is what about home shopping deliveries? Anyone who has ordered from tesco online will know what im talking about, they like to bag each item in its own bag Confused i had an order last week where a block of butter was tied up in a bag on its own also a net of garlic in a bag of its own Angry also whoever packed my shopping decided 2 large bags of bero could go on top of my loaf of bread Sad
Anyway point is how much are they going to charge online shoppers for bags when they put 1 item per bag it could end up been over £2 in some cases

Minisoksmakehardwork · 06/10/2015 08:01

Tesco have solved that problem by adding a standard 40p per order if you want your goods bagged. This is regardless of how many bags you need as they've worked it out as an average, according to an email I received. Considering my Tesco barely packs anything in bags even when you've asked, I spoke to the delivery driver and they're expecting it to take twice as long to do a delivery now as people will select no bags to avoid the charge. They also said they'd expect people to probably want to take the crate in and put everything away straight away, rather than dumping the bags in the hall/kitchen and unpacking at their leisure.

It's a shame there isn't an option to select 'bag for life' and then have them use those, which can be returned next time you have a delivery.

Crazypetlady · 06/10/2015 10:27

I am welsh we have had charges for years. It really isn't a big deal.
The online shopping we just took everything quickly out the crate chuck it on the side unpack once the crates are back.
I agree O.P the bags are a nightmare at self service, I have anxiety also and if I do buy a bag I absolutely hate it.
Not to mention UNEXPECTED ITEM IN BAGGING AREA.

Crazypetlady · 06/10/2015 10:30

Oh and if you buy the sturdier bags the money doesn't go to charity even more reason to bring your own

PosterEh · 06/10/2015 10:36

I'm abroad and Tesco don't do the option of bags with online deliveries. Everything comes just in the crates with fruit and veg in large paper bags.
The drivers bring the bag into the kitchen and help unpack them into the table. I can't say it takes much longer than when we had bagged deliveries in the UK as they would always have loads of bags with only one thing in.

gandalf456 · 06/10/2015 11:45

I find it is never quick to go through self-service anyway

Warriorsoftheworld · 06/10/2015 17:10

Think I'll just switch to aldi and lidl and invest in a shopping trolley and some jute bags
