Hi,

Slight emergency. I went travelling for 6 weeks with my best friend at the beginning of Sep. We're due home next week.

She was working in a country in s America (sorry to be vague, trying not to out self!!!) and the plan was I would meet her there and we would travel up together and go to a few countries (v whistlestop tour) along the way

We agreed to sort out the finer details when I arrived but on her advice (very important! She told me to do this) I booked two flights, one arriving to where she lived and the other leaving from a different country, which we were going to work our way up to

We've now looked and it's a bit harder/further than we thought to get to this country. She hasn't booked her flight home but wants to book it from somewhere else as it's cheaper (country were in now). It will cost me about £300 to get to this country and take a while; I'm really scared about doing it by myself. I have checked and it's impossible for me to change my flight without losing all the money (£499!!!!)

She has refused to discuss it and is getting quite upset/annoyed. Wwyd?!?!

About 500... She is refusing to consider anything else and has just clammed up

She laughed about it at the start of the holiday but now I know for sure the airline is refusing to change my flight (fair enough) she won't even contemplate thinking about other options. I don't even mean monetarily (although not gonna lie that would be good), I'm just stuck!

I don't have this money btw, I haven't budgeted for it

If it was me I'd just do the original plan without her. How were you planning on travelling to the other country?

Call your Dad. Borrow/beg the money for a different flight home. Don't travel to the other country by yourself. Tell your family your situation. They'd want to know.

Brokenhearted yes she can, the trip is a present from her parents and they are paying for her flight. It sounds less scary how you have put it like that, thanks

Im just so so upset that she advised me to book this flight then when I got there drastically changed the plan and is refusing to look at things from my perspective...

Could you take advice from the British Consulate/Embassy as to whether they would advise a lone female to travel to the country that your flight leaves in?

Doyourecalllastfall · 25/09/2015 01:23

whatsgoingon thanks I have, just being a bit mopey as I wish she understood how I felt! But I will see what they can do, thank you thank you

Yes, perhaps credit card is the best option. My family will be able to help me pay for it, it's just an unexpected and unnecessary cost. She is unwilling to even consider it despite the fact we have another week left and could fit it in if she wanted to, she is unwilling to consider the extra expense though Hmm we have both spent so much on this hol (in comparison to what we earn I mean), I saved loads and just feel she has been a shitty friend considering I made the effort to do this in the first okace

Brokenhearted I will probably stay. For the sake of the trip it seems ridiculous to have a whole week on my own in a country without anyone I know. Thank you very much for your advice Flowers

I've travelled alone in S.America. Not advisable but can be done. In fact I prefer it! I think you need to stick to your original plan and think your friend is being mighty unreasonable. Think about buses, ask about safety but local buses often cheaper - also some really good local flights can still be found. University students are often friendly. Language schools also. Don't panic!

Doyourecalllastfall · 25/09/2015 01:37

Thank you so much, the plan was to go from northern Peru to Mexico city

Doyourecalllastfall · 25/09/2015 01:38

Buses aren't really an option all the way I don't think cos of the substance but flights are available, will start having a look and chalk this one up to experience! I think will have to have a good think about the friendship too

Doyourecalllastfall · 25/09/2015 01:40

Substance = distance! Sorry!

Thank you, really appreciate this Star I think will head to Mexico! It might be a chance to break free a bit and hopefully look around even if only for a couple of days! Smile

Thanks again so much and sorry to rant Flowers

Get on some travelling forums, there will be others in the same position who will be looking for people to meet up with and travel with. Book into hostels and not hotels - that's where you will meet people and I bet you will find a travelling partner. I've spent time in Peru alone in cusco and Lima with no issues. Very friendly people and never felt unsafe

Go yourself, take sensible precautions and have a great time.

Am shocked at 'call your dad' I mean, I'm presuming you're not 16?!
