at Asda... (lighthearted)

I ordered some pollock for son. Now in my household, this is a BIG thing as I don't eat fish, and as a result we never order/buy it.

I had looked online for some recipes for him and settled on a few that I thought would be suitable.

Asda online delivery man rocks up (just as the live Corrie was about to start I hasten to add!) and my list shows some substitutes which he points out to me. I get my shopping inside and as I'm unpacking notice that the list also says "Items unavailable that you were not charged for" The fish. And some chicken breasts. I was puzzled at this one as I had a bag of chicken breasts in front of me - clearly a freebie then!

AIBU to think that there must have been some suitable alternative to give me?! We ordered pollock. Not that exotic.

I hate it when shops do this, last week they had no onions or garlic.... I very much doubt the entire shop had no onions/ red onions/ spring onions/ frozen onions + no garlic/ frozen garlic/ easy garlic..... However yabu for ordering from Asda..

wankerchief · 24/09/2015 15:39

What a load of Pollocks

Yanbu they could of put another type of fish in the shop

WorktoLive · 24/09/2015 15:41

So there was no white fish of any type in your Asda that day? Hmm

YANBU. Or be thankful they didn't send fish fingers. Or shoe polish.

cjt110 · 24/09/2015 15:41

Nc19999992 I once ordered mini scotch eggs. They sent 12 free range eggs instead Hmm I just don't like tesco and the other places are too dear to shop in/deliver.

wankerchief I was quite miffed as I had planned to whip up some fish pies for DS. What would have been a suitable alternative to pollock? (as a none fish eater I have no clue!)

WorktoLive evidently not. See cross post above re scotch eggs....

Pollock is just white fish. Many fish fingers and fish pieces that don't specifically say cod or haddock are made from pollock.

Fish pie can be made from any fish you like really.

I use whatever I have - a mix of some of cod, haddock (smoked or unsmoked), pollock, salmon, prawns, salmon, scallops if I have them and another white fish that I can't remember the name of. You can also get fish pie mix that's a mixture of different types of fish.

The dozen eggs instead of scotch eggs might have been OK if they had sent the sausage meat too and the delivery driver had hung around to whip up the scotch eggs for you.

cjt110 · 24/09/2015 15:50

worktolive Indeed! But no, just the eggs. Apparently not the most surprising... the delivery driver once said someone had been delivered a punnet of strawberries instead of potatoes.... WTAF! Someone is having a joke with that one...

I love hearing about random substitutes!

Having never done an online shop myself I can't contribute.

BUT Pollack is a fairly cheap and tasteless fish used as a 'filler' so they probably didn't want to send you the much more expensive stuff.

Order fish pie filling next time, will be much tastier. You can't make a fish pie with just one type of fish - well you can obviously but it will be a bit shit!

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 24/09/2015 16:07

Cod and haddock are more expensive than pollock so it's possible that they chose not to substitute and cost themselves more money.
Ling is a possible substitute but I think there are concerns about over fishing so they may not even stock it.

Cod and haddock freeze really well so it's worth keeping an eye out for special offers online.

cjt110 · 24/09/2015 16:33

Great tips on the fish everyone. I have no knowledge myself and as it's for DS (13m) I wouldnt be eating it anyway.

Oh I was about to rave about the hairy bikers' white fish with chorizo crust recipe but it might be a bit OTT for your 13 month old...

annatha · 24/09/2015 17:14

My dh used to be a home shopping driver and he had some ridiculous substitutes in his time. When someone ordered wheat free bread or crackers he was often given standard multi grain bread as an alternative as the packer didn't know to look in the allergies aisle Hmm and also he once had cat food instead of nappies?! He'd always apologize and call his base in front of the customer so they knew it wasn't his fault, but he was frequently blamed for the packers making poor choices or packing leaking/almost out of date stuff.

nf1morethanjustlumpsandbumps · 24/09/2015 17:17

Sainsburys twice sent me cat food instead of dog food. I just tick no substitutions now.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 24/09/2015 17:24

There have been a couple of cracking substitution threads on MN in the past.

The weirdest one I ever received was a box of plasters as a substitute for a box of Pampers. The box of Pampers had been on special offer, which is presumably why they sold out of the size. Any other nappy in the right size might have been more suitable than a box of sticky plasters though!

Oldraver · 24/09/2015 18:00

I think you need to order several types of fish, and hope they have the one you want, then you can reject the others.

DS used to have soya milk and when I ordered one type, if they didnt have it they would send non..So I started to order two different types so I at least got some. I was ordering for a month (so about 20 odd packs) and if they didnt have one you would think they would double up on the other.....oh no

LavenderRain · 24/09/2015 19:03

I've told this story before on substitute threads but will share again.....

Years ago when home delivery first began, I asked for a box of Tampax and got a box of coloured pencils instead Shock
Still tickles me to this day........

Coley or river cobbler would have been reasonable substitute.

goawayalready · 24/09/2015 21:09

asda have the oddest people packing for them they got confused by me asking for fish and sent three different types fish pie fish frozen fish and some fresh fish for good measure and i only got charged for the small amount of fish i ordered fortunately we like fish

tesco tried to give me size three nappies instead of size five (computer recommended substitution fortunately my friend was the packer and overrided the computer as i had a distinctive weekly order she recognised me!)

ive had random packets of teabags other peoples shopping which fell in my box

also had a specialty bread delivered to me instead of my gluten free one as it was the same price as the gluten free one (however it did contain gluten!)
