to have slammed down my potatoes because of this rude man?

Loading groceries onto the conveyer belt in Tesco just now and a man comes up behind me breathing down my neck, throws down a divider and starts putting all the stuff from his basket on the belt. I then pushed the divider back and passive aggressively loaded my groceries on taking up as much space as possible, slamming my potatoes down and making him jump. He then folded his arms and leant on the belt whilst giving me a long hard stare.

Yes, he could probably see that my small trolleyful would not fill up the belt but isn't it good manners to wait for the person in front to unload first?

OP posts:
LineyReborn · 22/09/2015 18:49

Oh, I assumed he had divider-gated you.

Arkkorox · 22/09/2015 18:51

You should have called him a spud cunt.

EmmaGellerGreen · 22/09/2015 18:52

This place gets more surreal by the day.

SoupDragon · 22/09/2015 18:53

Guy was a twat though, of the variety who manspreads no doubt.

What an odd accusation given you were doing the checkout belt equivalent with your groceries.

MsTargaryen · 22/09/2015 18:53

YABU for slamming but he was annoying. Just talk next time. OI YOU GET BACK GRRRRR.

Bakeoffcake · 22/09/2015 18:53

If there was plenty of room of course you were being unreasonable, but I think you know that nowGrin

Mind you, you said he was "breathing down my neck" so maybe he was an impatient twat OR

Maybe his basket was really heavy so wanted to unload it. - I've done this in the past, when I've gone in for two things and end up with 27?

P90X3 · 22/09/2015 18:55

Wow, you sound such fun to go shopping with! If you had been in front of me and spread out your groceries, just to be a twat, then I would have just shoved them all further up the conveyor belt with the divider (especially after witnessing you taking your passive aggressive issues out on an innocent bag of potatoes for no justifiable reason), so maybe be thankful that he is more polite than me, or your day could have been worse.

BoskyCat · 22/09/2015 19:09

If it's good manners you are after, you shop shop at Waitrose.

Errm no! Not at ours. It's full of very pointy-elbowed rich and entitled older persons. I like Waitrose for the posh treats, but it's friendlier at Asda.

OP blokey shouldn't have put his divider on before you'd finished - the HEIGHT of rudeness (unless you literally only had one or two small things left and there was a huge empty expanse of conveyor - in which case maybe allowable)

His arm folding, leaning and staring was not nice.

BUT potato slamming just makes you look deranged and that's the last thing you want with this type.

I think I'd have just picked up the thingy and moved it back and said I think I'll need this much space, thanks! Perhaps with an almost imperceptible "some people!" eye roll and cheery smile.

CatMilkMan · 22/09/2015 19:09

Fuck you and fuck your potatoes, YABU.

BoskyCat · 22/09/2015 19:10

"Fuck your potatoes" also needs to be a general idiom.

A bit like "well blow me down with a feather!"

CigarsofthePharoahs · 22/09/2015 19:27

I did once have a lady start to load stuff on the conveyor belt behind me before I was even half way through unloading, I needed more room than she was intending to leave me.
I looked up and fixed her in a good old fashioned death glare. I may have tilted my head a little.
She looked uncomfortable and said "Oh, haven't you finished?"
I guess the half full trolley of stuff hadn't been enough of a clue. Sadly I didn't have any potatoes to slam that I remember.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 22/09/2015 19:29

I can't imagine working up the energy to give a shit at the time, never mind come and post a thread about it later.

Man pre-empts conveyor shocker!! Man reacts to passive aggressive behaviour by showing he has noticed it but otherwise failing to react in any notable way. Meanwhile potatoes bashed to fuck at hands of affronted shopper!

blibblobblub · 22/09/2015 19:43

Oh no why did spud cunt have to be mentioned, I can't even laugh properly as I'm feeding DD and don't want to startle her Grin

Nataleejah · 22/09/2015 19:46

Maybe his basket was very heavy?

BertieBotts · 22/09/2015 19:46

I love the mental image conjured up by this thread. Both the OP and the responses Grin

How did he lean on the belt? Did he stop it from moving?

Andylion · 22/09/2015 19:48

I would never have dreamed of touching the divider until the person in front of me had finished unloading. but I guess that's just me.

I'm the same, OP. I wasn't raised in a barn. However, I love the noble potato and would never intentionally harm one.

LineyReborn · 22/09/2015 19:49

If I worked behind a till and someone one leant on my belt I'd hit the pedal on full rev.

Ilovetorrentialrain · 22/09/2015 19:50

LineyReborn they're pedal-operated? That's fab. Didn't know.

HoneyDragon · 22/09/2015 19:54

You should've sat on the conveyer belt.

Then assaulted him with your naice ham and called him a wank badger. You were very unreasonable to your potatoes.

NewLife4Me · 22/09/2015 19:55

Ditto to MovingOnUp

I'm not even sure I'd have noticed tbh.

Autumnnights1 · 22/09/2015 19:57

YANBU. The man was a rude impatient twunt.

I would have moved the divider back and told him to wait!

Mrsmorton · 22/09/2015 20:01

Id forgotten about spud Cunt.

Good times

PaulAnkaTheDog · 22/09/2015 20:01

I cannot believe that you actually have the audacity to call this man a twat when you were the one who behaved like a dick. Are you having a bad day?

SoleBizzzz · 22/09/2015 20:05

Yanbu he is the Dick!

Bluetrews25 · 22/09/2015 20:06

Suggest you don't go to Aldi, then, if you hate this.
