Aibu to use a preowned duvet?

I bought a second hand duvet at the weekend for my toddlers cot bed. I wasn't sure at the time but since it would fit in the washing machine I decided I was being silly and bought it. Now I'm not sure whether to use it. We've got plenty of second hand clothes but is this different?

If you can wash it I wouldn't have a problem with it

Chippednailvarnish · 21/09/2015 13:21

Napisan it!

sparechange · 21/09/2015 13:26

Every time you stay in a hotel, you are using a preowned duvet, so it wouldn't bother me...

Birdsgottafly · 21/09/2015 13:42

Having had experience of bed bugs, I freeze anything made of material and then hot wash it.

Freezing works for other insects, even Cockroaches.

starlight2007 · 21/09/2015 13:46

I would put it through a very hot wash but yes..

As a childminder. I do have sets of bedding for each child but when they grow out of Naps they get saved for the next one ( obviously laundered)

TheHouseOnTheLane · 21/09/2015 13:50

Fine. In hotels it's all second hand!

Wearyheadedlady · 21/09/2015 14:20

You can take it to the dry cleaners -that will kill anything inside and get it clean, but it might be a bit pricey (not cheaper than a new duvet)....

Sazzle41 · 21/09/2015 14:41

Does dry cleaning and washing kill bed bugs and scabies mites tho? Bear that in mind. Freezing - i have heard of that re dust mites, but arent bed bugs immune to most everything except chemicals? (London has big prob with them now due to more 2nd hand bed furniture doing rounds)

Excited101 · 21/09/2015 14:47

Freezing or washing at 60 will get rid of bed bugs

PigletJohn · 21/09/2015 15:07

tumble drier will kill insects and eggs (also clears moth). You may need to take it to the laundrette though unless it is small or thin, so it can flop about and the heat can penetrate. I would always wash second hand bedding anyway.

I have seen frozen spiders revive when they warm up.

littlefrenchonion · 22/09/2015 02:53

Our duvet is second hand! We just put it in our washing machine at home (it's low tog). Doesn't bother me at all.

bessiebumptious2 · 22/09/2015 03:03

Stick it on the hottest wash you can for the material to survive (60 deg) - you have nothing to lose and nothing will survive that...

I regularly do my outer bedding at 95 (and sometimes DP's shirts by accident!) and it's fine. Duvet will probably shrink but if you're in two minds anyway then go for it. Otherwise, freeze it overnight in a bag then take it to the dry cleaners as well - it'll be fine.

Bulbasaur · 22/09/2015 05:08

I always wash all DD's baby clothes and blankets in the hottest setting possible because I know exactly what they've been through. Then tumble dry them on the hottest settings. Her stuff is still bright and vibrant. I'd just do that and it'll probably be fine.

It can't be worse than handed down baby clothes that have likely had all manner of bodily fluids get on them at some point.

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 22/09/2015 07:19

My dd absolutely loves her 'new' quilt and cover.

Checked it for obvious stains/bugs. Nothing.

Hot wash in the machine. Put it on her bed. She sleeps much better as she is warm all over!

Best £3 I spent in ages.

I was looking at the pretty cover, didn't realise it had the quilt in too until I took it off the hanger.

GloGirl · 22/09/2015 07:43

It is different to me, I use a lot of second hand clothes but would not give my children second hand duvets or pillows.

I'd certainly wash it.

Sockattack · 22/09/2015 08:03

Duvet or duvet cover? If latter no issue at all. Buy and sell according to favourite characters.

Actual duvet- I'd probably buy new. They aren't that expensive.

ArriettyMatilda · 23/09/2015 00:04

It is a duvet and also sheets to go with. I won't fit it in my freezer. I think I'm.going to have to throw it, I just can't shake this anxious feeling. I get that a hotel is second hand but that is only used for a few days. I have a washer dryer, I don't know if it would have the same effect as a tumble dryer on killing bugs. Really wish I'd thought is through before I bought it nct nearly new sale pressure

Just wash it. Does your machine have a white wash setting? My washing machines 17 years old so it's white wash is 95 degrees. Bugger all surviving that. Chuck some bleach in with it if your really unsure. My kids ride motocross and I chuck bleach in the washing machine to get the muck n grass stains out their kit

Bogeyface · 23/09/2015 00:29

Give it a really good wash and it will be fine.

Their is very little difference between second hand clothes and second hand baby duvets.

An adult duvet would be different (think what adults do in bed!) but a baby duvet will not have anything nasty on it.
