Her by Harriet Lane

I feel like I've wasted time reading this book because it had a truly shit ending.

Also The Deep End by Emily Barr

Please share yours....

My most hated book is 'Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood'. What a load of utter tripe. Even their names annoyed me. Recommended to me by three friends who adore it, so I shall prepare to be roasted!!

StopLaughingDrRoss · 09/01/2016 15:31

A few posters have mentioned the Harry Potter epilogue. ...

Yup - Fuck Off Angry

Recently watched the last film - the ending of the book was better than that at least!

Bodicea · 09/01/2016 17:22

One day in May by Catherine Elliott. Truly auwful!

mintoil · 09/01/2016 17:30

I threw "Her" by Harriet Lane across the room at the end!! Not knowing whether the child dies or not was just so annoying and surely the whole point. Also, the "reason" given for the stalking etc was just pathetic.

Also "Appletree Yard" by Louise Doughty. Utter shit. You would have to be simple to believe the plotline, and the supposed "twist" at the end wasn't remarkable at all - it was totally forseeable.

Second life by SJ Watson.
It was like he thought "oh I have reached my word/page quota" and stuck a full stop in to end it.
I work in a library and after the first novel we were so excited to get the second.
no one I work with liked it!

With Atonement, I think the sections which are imagined are peppered with clues, hints that don't sound quite right, things that are just a bit too far fetched.

So you either read those sections and spot the clues and find it intensely annoying because it all sounds ever so slightly off or you let the clues slide and find out it was made up and you have been conned.

Not good either way.

"I don't know how she does it" by Allison Pearson had some really well observed scenes and the bit where the banker bloke breaks down over the death of his wife is amazing and powerful.

But then it is ruined by a too neat ending: long lost Dad who turns up just in time to run a scam and it is all tied up neatly with a bow. Would have been much better to have made it a meandering little book about motherhood rather than something with a twist and a big stupid denouement.

Agree with the hunger games, and I just really don't get her relationship with Peeta, not long term anyway. Both her and Gayle were greatly affected by everything that happened, I'd have liked gem to work through that together.

The Tea Planter's Wife was excellent but it all sort of faded away at the end. Other than the main theme (which was a bit irrelevant when push came to shove) the other themes died a death. Such a shame for a beautifully written book. I'd still recommend it purely for the wonderful descriptions though.

whyistherumgone · 09/01/2016 20:47

Agree with The Hunger Games, although I didn't think she got off scot-free - didn't she have to stay in the Victor's Village without anyone else but Peeta and Haymitch, as she couldn't stay in District 13 because of what she'd done?

Alas, I digress. I HATED Lasting Damage by Sophie Hanna. It made me so angry. It wasn't great throughout and I kept thinking there must be a twist and then the actual ending was ridiculous.

Agree with The Husband's Secret and Her Fearful Symmetry too, for the reason's stated. Don't even get me started on Gone Girl.

The Shining Girls by Lauren Buekes left me feeling dissatisfied, I think it's because I really liked the concept and had such high hopes then it just sort of fizzled out for me...

Same with The Sea Sisters by Lucy Clarke - I think I wanted there to be more to it!

Excited101 · 09/01/2016 21:27

I've read The Husband's Secret but can't remember it at all... Probably says it all really!

I also remember a book about Twins living near the seaside (perhaps with a lighthouse involved?) that was disappointing...

winewolfhowls · 09/01/2016 21:34

To Tanith, witch week is my favourite book ever I've had it since primary school. Anything by Wynne Jones is amazing

IamTheWhoreofBabylon · 09/01/2016 22:05

I don't mind them petering out if it suits the book like behind the scenes at the museum or a rambling book like catcher in the Rye
I hate if there is a build up then crap like gone girl which started showing it's crapNess before the crappy end tbf

I have Coraline and haven't read it yet. The film is dd's favourite so disappointed to read that too has a crap ending

IamTheWhoreofBabylon · 09/01/2016 22:09

Agree life of pi
I can't remember the ending of the minituarist so perhaps that says it all

munkisocks · 09/01/2016 22:11

Sorry but The Hunger Games! So not a Disney ending so many die! I found it really poor tbh, unimaginative.
