To think that 7.45 am is just too blooming early

for the window cleaner to appear at my bedroom window?

It isn't the first time but this morning I was still in bed and had to hide under the duvet. Shock The curtains were closed but it still felt weird.

Scholes34 · 17/09/2015 09:26

Are they very thin curtains?

Seeline · 17/09/2015 09:29

Mine usually comes at about 8. It's better now that he has one of those cleaning system things so uses a pole for the upstairs window. Saves embarrassing moments like when he arrived whilst I was in the shower so unknowingly marched into my bedroom stark naked with him peering n the window Blush I don't think nets are too effective when you're that close Blush Blush

perpetuallybewildered · 17/09/2015 09:34

They're very pale curtains so that I could see his shape through them.

It isn't a large room so he was only a couple of feet away from me.

Mine makes enough noise putting the ladder up that I can escape the bedroom before he gets to the window.

MiddleAgedandConfused · 17/09/2015 09:45

Mine did this once when the we were up and getting ready for school, everyone running round half dressed.
We had 'words' and he never came again before 9.

MissFitt68 · 17/09/2015 09:58

It's not too early! Not everyone works 9-5

TiffanyAtBreakfast · 17/09/2015 09:59

YANBU, ask him not to come so early. However I can't help but feel that if you don't want anyone to see you 'running around half dressed', that's what blackout curtains are for... Wink

lorelei9 · 17/09/2015 10:01

it's far too early but - essentially I'd want to know when they were coming round anyway.

because I wouldn't want to jump out of my skin when a face appeared at the window...?

also, like today, I'm working at home, I will do a quick change for the gym at lunchtime, wouldn't want them to appear then either!

MiddleAgedandConfused · 17/09/2015 10:39

I guess if he always comes the same day at the same time so you know if you need to close the curtains, that's fine. Mine was always completely random so I would have had to close the curtains whenever I was changing 'just in case'.
You are the customer - you get to decide when is or isn't convenient for you. If you worked shifts and did not want to be disturbed in the afternoon, because you were sleeping, you should be able to say that to him.
If you are still in bed at 7.45 you can tell him not to come until a time when you are up. He does not have a 'right' to clean your windows whenever he wants to.

YANBU

A window cleaner shouldn't just appear at the window in my opinion. That's an invasion of privacy whether its 7:45 or 11:45. I think they should always knock first to warn you to let you know they're planning to start work.

Flashbangandgone · 17/09/2015 13:26

Absolutely.... I know it seems to be fairly common practice, but I think it's very rude and inconsiderate to just appear at your property like that. In terms of privacy it's not that different to having someone in your house.

If a tradesman to let himself into your house without knocking (assuming the door was open) and go up to your bedroom and walk right in, again without knocking, I can't imagine anyone not being incensed! Yet, for a window-cleaner to climb up to your upstairs window and peer through without some much as a ring on the door bell, that's OK? I don't get it.

shutupanddance · 17/09/2015 13:32

Yanbu. Although I wouldn't
Mind as I can't keep a window cleaner for love or money. must stop walking round nakedGrin

patterkiller · 17/09/2015 13:36

They probably look at the weather forecast and plan their day around that. But I think I would of his much like you. Mines just caught me lying down on the sofa watching last weeks Dr Foster.

No excuse, it's not my day off, I have no small DCs, just a bad case of procrastination as self employed working from home. The shame.

ConfusedinBath "But you don't see a face at the window, there's an enormous clattering noise that precedes it!"

yes, but not much use if you hear an enormous clatter and the cleaner's face appears a minute later.

perpetuallybewildered · 17/09/2015 15:06

Thanks for your responses.

Yes I think I will speak to him about it. He doesn't have a regular day and his work schedule is obviously governed by the weather. I realise not everyone works 9-5 but if they are working on my property then I should be able to have a say in the timing of that work.

I'm retired and enjoying the couple of mornings a week when I don't have commitments requiring an early start, it's a luxury to be able to have a lie in with a cuppa and a book. Smile

ConfusedinBath "Fuss about nothing."

pretty confident you've never been spotted DTD by the window cleaner.

Floralnomad · 17/09/2015 15:14

If the weather where you are was as bad as ours yesterday I should imagine he was making up for lost time yesterday , most window cleaners round here don't climb ladders anymore that have those long handled washing things ,very rare to see one with a ladder / bucket .

perpetuallybewildered · 17/09/2015 16:59

Beautiful weather in my part of Scotland this week Grin

OP posts:
lorelei9 · 17/09/2015 17:32

OP - yes, one of my friends in Scotland sent me a pic of some famous garden she visited yesterday, all bright and sunny. Arrived while we were all huddled in the office wondering if the rain would ease off enough so we could actually leave...!

ICanSeeForMiles · 17/09/2015 17:38

When dc1 was little and not a great sleeper dh took him out for a walk and I went for a nap upstairs. In my bra and knickers. With the curtains open.

Whilst I was fast asleep, the windows were cleaned. And I woke up half in, half out the covers, with a leg hooked over so they must have got a rare view of my arse Blush
