I can't afford to get to work

FiscallyChallenged · 16/09/2015 21:46

I was laid off my last job in July, and received my last set of wages (3 weeks worth) at the end of that month. I live in London, and I didn't get a travelcard last month because I didn't see the point if I wasn't going to be travelling every day, and I needed to make my money last as long as possible.
I started my new job last week, and have to pay pay-as-you-go fares to get there and back, which costs £7.60 per day. It would be cheaper to get the bus, but there's never any telling how long it would take- I took one home on my first day and it took almost three hours! I now have £15 left, I'm not paid til the end of next week and I have no idea what to do. It's way too far to walk, I have a bike but it's a bit of a wreck and doesn't have any lights. I'm already surviving on an apple and cup-a-soup for breakfast and lunch. I can't get a season ticket loan as you have to buy the ticket first before you're reimbursed. There's nobody I can borrow money from.

Help! Any ideas?

Did you sign on? JCP can help.

ImperialBlether · 16/09/2015 21:50

OP, this is your only post here. Are you a regular under a new name?

WorraLiberty · 16/09/2015 21:51

Pawnbrokers?

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 16/09/2015 21:52

Have you tried speaking to your enoloyer about IT? They might be able to pay you some of your wages in advance.

Speak to work & see if they can agree a salary advance? I know it's something we do. Then the amount just gets deducted from your salary when you do get paid. I am sure if you explain the situation they will at the very least consider it.

ImperialBlether · 16/09/2015 21:54

I would ask the Job Centre and if I didn't get anywhere there I'd ask the HR people at the company you work for.

museumum · 16/09/2015 21:55

In a similar situation in London I bought a ticket to the edge of zone 1 and walked the rest of the way. Is that an option?

Gileswithachainsaw · 16/09/2015 21:58

can u sell anything?

walk some dogs fir a few quid?

any old dvds you could take to cex?

is there a local pre loved that would take your old clothes?

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 16/09/2015 21:58

Speak to HR and explain the situation, see if they can help?
Speak to your bank?

bloodyteenagers · 16/09/2015 22:00

Free cycle. Facebook etc for some lights for the bike.
Or an advance. Although with An advance you will be short next month as well.

FiscallyChallenged · 16/09/2015 22:02

You got me Imperial I nc'd. Forgot to say, sorry.
I have nothing sell-able, I've never really been able to afford anything that someone would want secondhand.
I work for a foreign company so any request for an advance would have to go to the head office overseas, by the time I get a decision I'll have been paid anyway Confused I didn't sign on as I live with my partner and his salary plus my last lot of wages would have been taken into account so I'd have got next to nothing, I was hoping to find some temp work (didn't happen) and if previous experience is anything to go by I'd still be waiting for my first payment now! £10 of the £15 I do have is what my DP been able to give me... he's now broke as well. I can't get an overdraft or credit card (I've tried).

approach your council for a crisis loan
take bank statement to food bank
sell stuff on facebook selling pages
old clothes, belts, shoes, bedding, towels, bags sold to cash for clothes
Pawn shops
sell old DVD's, CD's, mobiles, laptops to music magpie or the like

Psycobabble · 16/09/2015 22:08

bike there is really the only option I think ! set off early and Pop in asda , wilko , Aldi, home bargains, pound shop etc etc etc for some cheap lights

FiscallyChallenged · 16/09/2015 22:08

I've posted on a few websites for dog walking/babysitting etc but so far nowt. The edge of zone 2 is a 2 hour walk away- I'm in deepest darkest zone 4! On the scrounge for bike lights atm so maybe I'll be lucky there.

How furiating that we have a poster who cant afford to go out to work. The system stinks. It really does. I think Call Me Dave and Mr cut tax credits George should be looking at this thread. To see just how those at grass roots are struggling, and that contrary to the belief or rather what they brain wash you to believe. Working is not always the best route out of poverty.

fastdaytears · 16/09/2015 22:11

Freecycle for bike lights sounds good. Also, check whether you have any clubcard points, nectar points or cashback on your bank card waiting to be claimed- you might be able to use those somewhere that sells lights?

Psycobabble · 16/09/2015 22:11

And then once there on the bike ( fingers crossed for getting some lights sorted) at least ask about an advance they may even give you it from petty cash just explain the situation. And see if there is anyone who can give you a lift for the next days

plentyavino · 16/09/2015 22:12

Use your £15 for bike lights

Lots of companies do season ticket loans for commuters, can you use those for travel cards? Don't know how long they take to process though?

Shakey15000 · 16/09/2015 22:14

Is there anyone you can blag a lift from?

mrssmith79 · 16/09/2015 22:15

See, this is the type of scenario where (whispers) a payday loan may be appropriate provided you get not one penny more than needed and pay it back in full the SECOND you get paid. A quick look shows that borrowing £50 and repaying in full next Friday (9 days) would cost about £3 in interest.

(Please don't flame me)

Konserve · 16/09/2015 22:15

or ask a colleague if they can give you a lift (at least to a walkable distance to home)

Lurkedforever1 · 16/09/2015 22:21

Pound shops sell bike lights, get some of those and cycle
