To feel disappointed in this teacher already

AliAliAlium · 16/09/2015 19:17

2 weeks into a new school year, first communication from this teacher: "Thankyou for your note this morning...." (written in DS's literacy journal in response to a query about homework). I struggle to get past things like this Confused.

And there is the voice of reason Smile. You are, of course, completely right. I just remember "2 words!" being drummed into me as a small child. (My original concern is a bigger issue and has not really been addressed).

Goodness me, I'd hate to be a teacher.

EponasWildDaughter · 16/09/2015 19:37

The gap between thank and you, you mean?

Maybe she was just writing quickly? Lots to do.

thankyou is not particularly incorrect, it has a long history, it's rising in popularity, it's completely understood, it's in the OED as a variant.

YABU.

InTheBox · 16/09/2015 19:44

Here we go again, it's truly open season on teachers. Yabu and would do well to firmly hold on to a grip.

leccybill · 16/09/2015 19:54

I've recently left teaching after many years and I think I was somewhat shielded from this during that time.
At the school gate picking my own dd up each day now, the parents absolutely let rip on the teachers. I'm shocked tbh.

Narp · 16/09/2015 19:55

Oh give over

OP please go and qualify as a teacher - and be perfect at all time - thank you Hmm

AliAliAlium · 16/09/2015 20:04

Ok, I will let it go Smile. I wouldn't let rip in RL. I wouldn't even mention it to another parent in the class. It just seemed like a fairly basic mistake to me, but fredfred's pot has been enlightening - maybe I need to move with the times!

Leccybill - what are you doing now?

I am currently forming my leaving strategy.

fredfredgeorgejnrsnr · 16/09/2015 20:22

AliAliAlium Earliest reference of thankyou in the OED is from 1894, and even older hyphenated, so yes certainly moving with the times to accept it now.

At least she didn't write, "ta for the note" ...

Youarentkiddingme · 16/09/2015 20:30

At least she/he didn't write "thnks for the note. Can u c me after schl 2moro 2 discuss it?"

And yes, thankyou is fully recognised as acceptable and has been published as such in OED.

However if your actual concern hasn't been addressed then that is a bigger issue.

It's no wonder teachers are so tired - sick and tired of parents by week 3 I should think!

Sparklingbrook · 16/09/2015 20:32

YABU. I thought it was going to be something a bit more earth shattering.

catfordbetty · 16/09/2015 20:42

Young teachers don't stay in the job long. The older ones (like) me are leaving as soon as they can. Why do you think that is?

Alwaysrushingaround · 16/09/2015 20:44

Damned if we do and damned if we dont..

I note you referenced "fredfreds pot". Are you implying she's been smoking something?

monkeysox · 16/09/2015 20:49

Ffs Biscuit

deepdarkwood · 16/09/2015 20:51

Seriously, that constitutes a reason to be disappointed in a teacher? Did s/he deal with your query in a helpful and sensible manner? S/he certainly dealt with it extremely promptly if you only gave your note in this morning...

I wouldn't even notice that, never mind be bothered about it (& my degree is in English Literature and Language ... but not spelling, I'm shit at spelling)

SmugairleRoin · 16/09/2015 20:51

YABU, but you seem to have accepted that already. Smile

Honestly given the state of some of the notes parents send in to me, I'd be a bit Hmm if they pulled me up on a mistake - because I accept that they aren't perfect and make mistakes when writing, and I hope they understand the same applies to me.

We're only human, after all.
