To think that riders should have to clean up horse mess?

You can get a £120 fine or whatever it is if you don't pick up after your dog. As a dog owner, I think this is absolutely right. Dog mess is antisocial and poses a health risk. I think it can cause blindness if ingested (?)

So why don't riders have to do the same? At the end of the road (suburban, we are a couple of miles from the nearest stables but they do occasionally make it this far across some farm land) there is a trail of horse mess that stretches about two metres across pavement and road.

It's rained multiple times and not been washed away, we don't have street cleaners that will come and clean it up. Why should the rider be able to leave it? It's just as disgusting and anti-social as a dog.

I mentioned to Dsis about it (she use to ride) and she semi agreed. Just made the point that they would need big bags to pick it up.

AIBU to think that riders should be forced to pick up after their horses?

Wow, honestly? Most people I knew, growing up in the countryside, often went looking for horse manure for their gardens, not moaned about free compost. Have times changed that much??

Also, giggling at the thought of some poor rider having to use an industrial sized pooper scooper for their horse. Would we have to have special horse-poop bins as well? Very odd...

BigbyWolf · 15/09/2015 13:11

But horse poo is harmless and inoffensive. Dog poo isn't.

Greymalkin · 15/09/2015 13:12

YABU. As loads have said already, horse crap is just grass and hay, no meat waste so it is no where near as offensive or hazardous.

However, I do agree that riders should not be on pavements unless absolutely necessary/emergency situation. In an ideal world they would clear it off pavements at a later date. Bit tricky though if you are on a very long ride.

There are far worse things to rant about

YouBastardSockBalls · 15/09/2015 13:13

OP if I was a horse I would totally shit in your street.

YouBastardSockBalls · 15/09/2015 13:13

I know that its a lot of poo, but surely all it would take was a couple of sainsburys bags, pick it up like you do for a dog, and hang it off the saddle when you continue.

Ok, this has got to be a wind up!

There was an almost identical thread on this a fair while ago... ????Carnivore shit is vile - smelly and carries diseases/worms that can affect people. Horse shit is, as someone has mentioned up thread, basically almost compost. It's going to be mostly grass/hay and plant based horse feed. If you object to that being on the road then you should object to being in the countryside more generally!

TheWitTank · 15/09/2015 13:17

Snort at the sainsburys bags idea! I might have a go at this next time I'm out. Where precisely I'm hanging them from on my saddle is another thing -my d rings are in use with the breastplate. Maybe he could wear them like a couple of rosettes from the bridle? I'm sure he would love that whilst fleeing in terror. I presume you don't ride op?

Booboostwo · 15/09/2015 13:17

Cat poo with toxoplasmosis may lead to eye problems and possible blindness. Horse poo is pretty much harmless.

Horses poo 12-24 times a day, that's a lot of carrier bags! Aside from the risk to other yraffic caused by a rider dismounting and attempting to clean poo, how would the rider remount?

YoungGirlGrowingOld · 15/09/2015 13:17

I must be weird because I bloody love the smell of fresh horse shit and I would be shoveling it off the OP's road for my roses before you could say "oh dear OP" Grin

Bearsbeets · 15/09/2015 13:17

YABFR that's fucking ridiculous rather than unreasonable. HTH Smile

DoJo · 15/09/2015 13:19

In theory I am with you - whilst it may be less of a chemical hazard, horse shit is still unpleasant to cycle, walk or push a pushchair through (and can be quite dangerous to cyclists particularly if it causes them to skid).

However, the practicalities outweigh any theoretical concerns as it is simply too dangerous to leave a horse unattended while you get off to clear up its poo from the road, so unless someone is prepared to legislate for horse nappies, it's unlikely to be considered.

mileend2bermondsey · 15/09/2015 13:19

FWIW I don't think YABU OP. Why is it ok for horses to shit all over the roads and footpaths, it's disgusting.

Might I suggest one of these very fetching articles

YANBU. Bunbag. Easy solution.

patterkiller · 15/09/2015 13:19

Op. It's a near unanimous YABU but your still banging on. Your wrong we are correct. Plus it's huge. How do you miss it to step in it?

YoungGirlGrowingOld · 15/09/2015 13:20

Although thinking about it, I have seen a kind of shit hammock attached to a horse-pulled carriage at a friend's wedding....are they a thing?

FairNotFit · 15/09/2015 13:20

YABU. And impractical.

Alisvolatpropiis · 15/09/2015 13:20

Oh give over, YABU.

InimitableJeeves · 15/09/2015 13:20

The thing is, though, that horseriding is a leisure activity in most cases. If someone invented a new leisure activity which entailed leaving piles of steaming, smelly muck all over the place (and, as much as you claim it is grass based and inoffensive, it definitely does stink), the chances are that it either wouldn't be allowed or would very soon become subject to regulations requiring the participants to clear up after themselves. And if they all fell about laughing saying "Don't be silly, it would be far too dangerous" the response would be "Fine, you can't do it then." Or possibly "Fine, the council will clear it up, but you will have to have an extremely expensive licence to be permitted to carry out your activity." And maybe that's the answer.

Owllady · 15/09/2015 13:22

If you can't cope with horse poo, don't live in the country

purplemeggie · 15/09/2015 13:23

Perhaps we need to reconnect with the land a bit. My father tells about how the kids in the 40s used to follow the milk cart round with a bucket so that they could be the one to take the steaming turd home for the veg patch Grin.

CarriesBucketOfBlood · 15/09/2015 13:24

I must be weird because I bloody love the smell of fresh horse shit In that case, if I were a horse I totally wouldn't shit on your street.

I'll accept I'm obviously BU. You're right, I clearly don't ride and don't really like horses

I don't think I'm incorrect in saying it's still disgusting. After a couple of days of rain it's turned to slimy grey goo and even if it wouldn't blind me if I rubbed it in my eyes, I still can't appreciate it.

Cats that shit in my garden annoy me infinitely more than horse shit on roads or even pavements. Should owning cats be banned then? Or the owners be made to follow their cats around to pick up their shit?^??^??Cat shit is actually a health hazard, so for cats to do it in my garden where my child could encounter it is far grimmer and anti social than horse shit on the road/pavement.
