To change our contact details on the school's class list

katemiddletonsothermum · 15/09/2015 11:45

The contact details for my son's year group has been sent home. This is a sheet of paper with the home addresses and phone numbers on, obviously intended for us all to organise lots of coffee mornings and lunches.

We are the only family without a house name, or farm name, or hall name, or barn name. Oh, the shame of it. We are listed with just the street number. Our house does have a name, actually, but I can never be bothered to use it.

Should I insist that the school changes our details and amends / resends the contact list? Or should I just think f it.

Am tempted to rename our house as The Poor House.

One of DS's classmates had the best address on our list. A pub.

Could you move?

Whatthefreakinwhatnow · 15/09/2015 11:49

what?!! ShockI wouldn't be happy with this at all!! Whatever is wrong with arranging g playdates in the playground or via notes passed by the DC with a contact number?! Some of the parents at my Dds school are, frankly, vile so I wouldn't want them to be able to call or come round!

If I were you I would be having my address taken off full stop!

There are data protection and privacy issues galore here ...

Have you given the school your consent to have your details shared in this way? Otherwise they are in breach of the Data Protection Act.

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 15/09/2015 11:56

Assuming you are in the UK and haven't explicitly consented to the school sharing these details, they gave breached the Data Protection Act.

I would make a strongly worded complaint and tell them you want your details updated to show you do not consent to sharing

If you're feeling up for some fun, you could report them to the Ingirmation Commissioner....

TwmSionCati · 15/09/2015 11:57

Lurking Husband speaks truth - how can the school circulate your private details? do they not see the issues here? Is it a private school? If so they might be less aware of certain things......

I'm always amazed at how many schools think their exempt from The DPA. Confused

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 15/09/2015 11:57

*information bloody iPhone....

Seeline · 15/09/2015 11:58

It's always happened for all my DCs classes at various schools, but always with the consent of each family. You could opt out if you wanted to. It has certainly never led to anyone just popping round uninvited, and has actually proved very useful at times - especially for emergencies.
Presumably the school have put the address you supplied to them when you joined the school? Were you asked if it was OK to circulate your details?

mrstweefromtweesville · 15/09/2015 11:58

I'd be raising a heck of a fuss if the school sent out my details. As I did when teaching and the school circulated staff's home contact details.

EdithWeston · 15/09/2015 12:00

The schools I have direct experience of all do this. The PTA class reps organise it, and you have to opt in.

OP: at least no-one at yours appears to live in a castle...

I am always amazed how everyone seems to think they are exempt from the DPA.

This!! Surely they can't just hand out your details willy nilly to everyone in the class?! Confused
I have a 12 year old who has gone all the way through primary school without having any details handed to school gate parents, and now in high school with none of this. Oh, and also an 8 year old and they don't do it either!
Wouldn't be happy with that at all, you don't know who they're giving your details to!
Surely if it's for coffee morning arranging or whatever that's for the mums to decide between themselves if they want to go and arrange something.... you know, with friends like everyone else does....

Is it a private school!?

JaneAustinAllegro · 15/09/2015 12:05

the class reps always do this at our school and even Celebrity Telly Mum puts her mobile number on there (I've always assumed it's really her PA's / nutritionist's or something)

winchester1 · 15/09/2015 12:06

House names for every address -,surely this is a light hearted thread!

I'd insist on a new list with Katies Castle as your house name.

herethereandeverywhere · 15/09/2015 12:07

Why are you so concerned about where other people live Confused?

If you haven't given express permission then inform the school of their breach of the data protection act and tell them to get some training.

Our schools all do this but it's opt in. It's really useful and in any event by the time we've done several kids parties/coffee mornings/drinks evenings we know where half of them live anyway.

quangotango · 15/09/2015 12:08

normal.at private schools but they ask if you're happy tonsupy it normally.

I don't get why not having a house names signifies anything? I know people that live in a £3 million house which is just the number and the road and I know someone that lives in a 2 bed semi called something cottage.

TwmSionCati · 15/09/2015 12:08

it might be 'opt in' in that way that schools have where if you dont 'opt out' then you are 'in' by default?
