To think it should be possible to buy a decent place to live in London for £750k?

We have been looking at the market for a while now and are ready to pay up to £750k for the right property, but there seems to be nothing available within that price range. Sorry to moan and I know that it's a first world problem, but the prices seem ridiculous.

We would like a 2 bedder in or near WC1/NW1/EC1/SE1, ideally if not in a period building then one that isn't a high rise and with a bit of character and a bit of outside space - balcony, small patio garden or whatever.

Am I being unrealistic? Who can afford these prices? Certainly not most people, I am guessing.

Anyway, rant over and I would be grateful for any advice as to where we might look where we can hopefully achieve what we are looking for without going too far out of the centre. In an ideal world, I would like to be walking distance of theatre land/the south bank. Maybe Bermondsey would be an option, but it seems a bit isolated. Also Lambeth North, but according to the press it is full of gangs.

There are no DC involved in the decision so schools irrelevant, not that I suppose that it makes it any easier......

Alanna1 none of which are particularly handy for the OP's preferred evening areas.

lostintoys · 21/09/2015 12:09

Have you looked in the southernmost part of NW5, which adjoins NW1? Walking distance to British Museum, central London, plus very close to Primrose Hill, Hampstead Heath, etc. I used to walk to work in Bloomsbury in 30 mins from this area. This for instance [http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-35975406.html]

Just move out of london further out.

Socrates67 · 22/09/2015 16:31

Lost. Funnily enough I met a friend for lunch in NW5 today after viewing in more central areas and was impressed by the quality of the houses so I may investigate further. She has agreed to let me know if she hears of anything and can show me round.

Jeebus - Islington is Z2 and hardly a faff to get home from. If you work in the city it's less than 20 mins on the bus.

cornflowers · 22/09/2015 17:27

OP correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't you started about 3 threads on this exact theme over the past few years...

Socrates67 · 23/09/2015 05:45

Cornflowers. I seem to recall starting one other thread a while ago regarding finding a property for £500k, but as you will note, I have revised my budget upwards since then! You obviously spend even more time on MN than I do!

We have put in an offer on a flat close to Euston station which is not period but ticks my other boxes (or very nearly).

Hmm

Why on earth shouldn't people post similar threads? 3 threads over the last few years is hardly spamming the boards!

cornflowers · 23/09/2015 09:58

Stop pulling faces BIWI, the wind might change!

I passed no judgment on the fact that OP has started multiple threads on the same theme - I merely asked whether this was the case, as the content seemed very familiar!

In reply to OP, I doubt I spend more time here than you do - before this week I hadn't visited Mumsnet for months!

bus? You could walk it in that time (depending on where you live).

45 minutes from Waterloo www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-51608362.html#

CruCru · 24/09/2015 09:45

I wouldn't have thought that would be what the OP is looking for Horsey.

HorseyCool · 24/09/2015 09:46

I have property envy now! This looks lovely www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-51608362.html#/property-for-sale/property-54552608.html

But a bit too far out for OP. Good luck with purchase OP

Socrates67 · 24/09/2015 18:10

Thanks Cru. Horsey, I think those places are lovely just not quite in the area where I am looking, but really gorgeous.
