To hide the bloody guitar?

Ds 15 is vair talented at guitar. Super. I'm very proud.
He wishes to perfect "sultans oh swing" and is doing so, he's been learning it for about 3 weeks now, practicing a lot. Sometimes in his room, sometimes in the living room, sometimes plugged in.
I'm so fucking sick of that fucking song I could cry, I detest it which is a shame because I used to love it but he's ruined it for me. It's incessant, I get in around the same time as him and he starts, it stops and he plays something else and then he starts again. I hear it when he's not playing it.
He's sulking because I asked him to stop which I know is awful and I feel bad but he was in the next room ( connecting open double doors so practically same room) and I actually thought I was going to scream, it's like torture.
It's stopped for now but I know he needs to perfect it for a show at Christmas but aibu to just hide the bloody guitar? He's got 4 actually, and a ukulele. Sigh.

Disclaimer, he is brilliantly talented, a fantastic live performer and I'm super proud. also will bookmark this page for when he's famous and I can do witty interview in the guardian or the like

Anyone else got a child with a spectacularly loud hobby that is driving them insane?

Bagpipes in this house too.
100 decibels and you can't turn the volume down

sproketmx · 15/09/2015 00:22

Bloody annoying isn't it mawbroon especially when the drummers doing a proper March they were meant to learn at band practice but the pipers gone all Angus young and is doing acdc Confused aaahhh. Shotgun ear defenders are good

footphobic · 15/09/2015 00:50

I've never counted the guitars. Some friends visited recently and one stood looking at said collection and just said in bewilderment "that's a lot of guitars". Four of my five dc play, and DH so we're in double figures.

Also a massive electric keyboard, ukes and a banjo. Half of it dd will attempt to shoehorn into a tiny uni halls room next week.

Dd's last grade exam included the can can. I'm still recovering.

She's off to study music though so I am really proud. and so glad I never have to listen to that bloody keyboard again

chelle792 · 15/09/2015 00:55

About 15 guitars as far as I can tell!! OH keeps "finding" more at his parents though. He's now started moving his big amps in!

The latest trend is 'close your eyes and tell me which guitar sounds better.....'

FuckOffJeffrey · 15/09/2015 01:11

4 guitars and 2 drum kits here amongst other random percussion things. DD is desperate to learn bagpipes but still too young to start lessons yet thank goodness as apparently they take them from 7 and she's just turning 6. No idea why she's so keen as we know no one who plays but she's been adamant about it since she was 3. I can only imagine what torture it would be to live in the same house with a child practicing the bagpipes on a regular basis.

DH was a relatively sucessful musician in his younger days but I can't play anything to save myself (unless chopsticks on the piano or the sky boat song on the recorder counts). She obviously gets the music thing from him.

shadowfax07 · 15/09/2015 01:21

One of our NDN's is a bass player, I've told him I won't complain about his practice if he doesn't complain about me singing along :-D (his sister and I were in county choir together.. :-D )

operaha · 15/09/2015 06:26

I can't quote for some reason but rocking in the corner and close your eyes have me laughing my arse off this morning!

at least hes good. my dd plays violin. badly. i have to check my ears are not actually bleeding some days Grin

Ledkr · 15/09/2015 07:34

Dd plays piano and sings, she is very good.
"All of me" seventy times anyone? Hmm
We have now stuck her into the spare room!!

LollipopViolet · 15/09/2015 10:18

I will take ALL of your musicians and their assorted instruments! I love music but can't really play anything well, I can sing a bit, but again not well. I'd love a house full of music...

No bagpipes though. I draw the line at bagpipes.

YetAnotherUserName · 15/09/2015 10:29

Only one piano here, DDs are ruining learning a lot of Michael Nyman and Philip Glass for us. The joys.

Mrsjayy · 15/09/2015 11:52

Dd plays electric guitar she is very good now but then omg i got her headphones sorted.

Wafflenose · 15/09/2015 11:56

My DD is a musician too, and wants a piccolo (er... no) but her very loud hobby is arguing. At the top of her voice. She spends more time arguing and ranting than actually doing what it is she's been asked to do (brush her teeth, practise the flute, hang her coat up, etc etc). She's nearly 10 and we never give in to her moaning. I am looking forward to the day when she realises it's futile, but not holding my breath.

DMCWelshCakes · 15/09/2015 14:06

I think we need to found a support group for those of us overrun by instruments and amps. With a special section for those afflicted with bagpipes.

You all have my very deepest sympathy. Smile

FloppyRagdoll · 15/09/2015 15:02

At its zenith...
3 guitars,
a ukulele
4 violins,
a baby grand piano (which is loud when the lid is open)
a full-size e-piano,
keyboard,
clarinet,
oboe,
flute,
viola,
double French horn,
soprano sax,
tenor sax,
12 recorders of various sorts,
8 flageolets,
bagpipes,
an accordian,
assorted percussion instruments,
a digeridoo,
3 glockenspiels (glockenspiele?)
and a partridge in a pear tree.

And, fortunately, a large, well-sound-proofed house in the middle of nowhere.

LadySheherazade · 15/09/2015 15:25

Oh , god bagpipes!

Reminds me of Ross in Friends doing that song...now what was it?! Grin

operaha · 15/09/2015 16:52

Celebrate by kool and the gang Hmm thanks for today's ear worm!

I've just got in, late work day for me, my eyes feel like they're bleeding. He's playing that fucking song, I can not cope with it, his bedroom is above the kitchen where I now have to slave away for an hour.
We have a third floor, he is being banished now. Cue telling me I'm ruining his career etc.
Wish me luck.

Actually, I really like bagpipes so am quite happy when he practices.

I am also a musician and I win in terms of driving the household nuts practicing. But when my kids tell me how bad I am (I'm not!), I remind them that it's the money I earn playing music that pays for their holidays!

0pheliaBalls · 15/09/2015 19:05

DH plays guitar. At the moment he's perfecting Bigmouth Strikes Again by The Smiths.

I used to love that song.

operaha · 15/09/2015 19:30

I told him. He rolled his eyes, sighed, said "alriiiiight for god's sake" but he plugged in headphones or unplugged amp or stopped our whatever. I was so dead when I got in, it was for his own safety. to aid the healing process they got waffles, fried eggs, bacon and beans for dinner I'm nearly all better, shower, dinner and bed by 9 for me, oh my life at the moment! Think I'm veering in to another thread... Brew
