not to send wrong item I received to other buyer

I won a baby outfit last week but received the wrong item. I contacted the seller and explained and she was able to track my item down, so she has asked me to forward the wrong item to an address she has sent me and told me the other buyer will do the same but how do I know they will? Both items would probably be about the same price but mine will be no good to the other buyer as it will be too small. When I said to the seller I wasn't sure about doing that as I didn't know if I was covered if I didn't receive the original item, she said well there's nothing else she can think of and sent me the address and said she was going on holiday on wed and couldn't sort it out (this was monday) but she sent me an email on Friday asking if it was posted yet. It's not! AIBU not to send it until I receive my item? I realise it was probably a genuine mistake but I don't know who I'm posting to and what kind of feedback they've had, how do I know they won't just sell my item on? It was £15.50 plus £3.20 postage then I'll be postage again I'd be really annoyed to just throw 20 odd £ away for a second hand item that I never even received, or should I just chance it and hope the other person won't keep my item I imagine they might be waiting to receive theirs first as well. Don't know what to do Hmm

As far as I know you should return to the seller, not the other buyer, it is for the seller to sort out. If you don't get the correct item you will be covered by buyer protection (assuming it's eBay).

BockCadger · 14/09/2015 13:46

I'd report the seller to eBay, it's not either of your jobs to correct her mistakes.

MythicalKings · 14/09/2015 13:46

Tell her you're going to return it to her for a full refund and open an Item not as described case on ebay.

DrGoogleWillSeeYouNow · 14/09/2015 13:49

Was this via EBay?

It's not up to you to sort out her mistake and there's no way I'd be paying out for the postage.

Open a case - item not as described/wrong item received, and leave her to sort it out.

StillRunningWithScissors · 14/09/2015 13:49

So is the person you bought the item from expecting you to pay the postage cost to send the item to the other buyer?

I don't think I'd go along with this, as it's now working outside of eBay/PayPal.

She has the tracking info to show you've received something from her.

I would send back to her. Maybe best if you went through eBay as returning as item not as described?

It's not your problem that she messed up and is now away.

craazyperson · 14/09/2015 14:09

Sorry should have said it was eBay. That's what I thought, I would lose my protection by just posting away to someone else. I just didn't want to seem like a twat for not trying to resolve it the easiest way plus then she said she was going on holiday on Wednesday as if she wouldn't be in to receive the item if it were sent back to her. I know it's only £20 and I might be being a bit paranoid but it just seems dodgy to me. No mention of her paying postage either I never really actually realised she could this has never happened before I normally just buy and receive that's why I'm asking on here, so should I just contact her and say I'm not willing to do that as I've not received my item and I'm opening a case for item not as described? Thanks for your help!

I would just message her "I'm not prepared to forward the item on to your other buyer, as this breaks the rules of EBay and I have no protection. I am also not prepared to be liable for the postage costs. I am going to open a case for wrong item received and we can proceed from there".

Do it all via EBay now, even returning the item to her, as she is liable for the postage for that too.

I did this the other week with 2 items that were almost identical (about £30 each too!) I was mortified. Thankfully I realised what I'd done before I sent the second parcel so was only one down.

I grovelled to buyer, paid return postage and a bit extra to get himself a beer with, then sent him the right item. Meanwhile, I grovelled to other buyer who was now waiting for his item and refunded him a fiver.
Both left 5 Star glowing feedback thankfully.

Your seller needs to be sending you the postage to return the item to her, and the same with the other buyer. If she values her account she needs to be a lot more proactive than she currently is.
