Slight red flag or easily occurring accident?

midlifehope · 14/09/2015 13:04

End of last week, my ds aged 3 1/2 came out of nursery school sporting a small gash millimetres from his eye. His teacher brought out the accident book and apologised, saying it was her fault, she thought he wasn't sitting down, pulled the chair away and caught him with it. It hasn't healed yet after a few days, though it's smaller. Is this a little red flag about carelessness or an accident that could happen to anyone in a busy environment?

Accident. Wouldn't think twice tbh.

Needaninsight · 14/09/2015 13:05

Accident. They happen. That's why they're called accidents.

Honestly that could have happened in anyone's care.

NorbertDentressangle · 14/09/2015 13:13

Accident.

Classrooms are busy places full of energetic, busy children, lots of movement , lots of furniture/equipment so accidents will happen.

My DS broke his arm in a classroom in Yr1 and I never thought anything other than it was an accident and these things happen.

SitsOnFence · 14/09/2015 13:18

Poor little DS Sad Has he just started nursery? I hope it hasn't upset him too much.

It does sound like a very unfortunate accident to me. If it's any consolation, I bet the teacher will be keeping an extra close eye on him for the rest of the year!

Welshmaenad · 14/09/2015 13:20

I've done worse to my kids by accident. It sounds genuine. If also be really encouraged by her honesty rather than her making up something that exonerated her! Good nursery.

TwmSionCati · 14/09/2015 13:21

accident.
It is when they DON'T bring out the accident book that you should really worry!

BumpTheElephant · 14/09/2015 13:52

Accidents happen. It's recorded in the book and the teacher told you what happened. I wouldn't think any more of it.
I hope your ds's eye heals up quickly and that he's ok.

Spartans · 14/09/2015 15:06

If he only did it at the end of last week, it won't be healed yet. Sounds like an accident to me. When you say 'red flag' what do you mean? Are you concerned they are not careful enough or that she did it on purpose?

Maybe it's just me but kids have been injured in my care and by me. Accidentally knocked them over, nothing serious but misjudgments offie close they are stood etc.

DoreenLethal · 14/09/2015 17:07

she thought he wasn't sitting down, pulled the chair away and caught him with it.

Eh?

I don't understand how this happened. Is that your issue?

Gruntfuttock · 14/09/2015 17:09

I'm glad I'm not the only one confused Doreen, I couldn't work out what had happened at all.

NotMeNotYouNotAnyone · 14/09/2015 17:20

Accident. She reported it in the book, owned up that it's her fault, and told you about it.

midlifehope · 14/09/2015 23:33

Yes that is my issue - I can't visualise what actually happened. How could a chair cause a gash - must have been the end of the chair leg or something - but what was that doing at his eye level. I just cant picture the scenario?

An accident. You really need to relax, yes easier said than done but your child will get a lot more bumps bangs and bruises along the way. You can't be panicking every time the teacher presents an accident form.
Accidents happen 1,000 times a day.

sproketmx · 14/09/2015 23:44

Accident. I'd imagine she caught him with it as the chair was in motion and he was falling to the ground. Maybe she looked one minute and he wasn't sitting on it looked away for a second and by the time she reached for it his but was on it. I've done something similar with one of the kids ride ons. Almost fell over it, was going to move it, another kid started yapping at me so I turned my back to it for a second to answer yet another inane question about why the grass is green etc, back kicked it without looking and sent a 2yr old flying who had decided to come back and grt on it

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 14/09/2015 23:48

Sorry op. Should have said. I hope your DS is okay

SingingSamosa · 14/09/2015 23:54

Sounds like a genuine accident to me...

My DD tripped and banged her chin on the corner of a table when she was about 16 months old at nursery (she'd only been walking for about 2 months). She bit right through her tongue, splitting it in half, and up into her top gum. When her top teeth came through, one of them was dead (although it still hasn't fallen out and she's nearly 8!) and the adult tooth may have also been affected. It never occurred to me that it was anything other than a genuine accident or that it could have been prevented! The staff were absolutely mortified about it - I think they were shocked at just how much blood a tongue laceration creates!

Tootsiepops · 15/09/2015 05:37

Shock singing - oh my days. That sounds utterly horrendous. Your poor daughter. Was there any lasting damage to her tongue? Hope her adult tooth is ok.

Ouch.

thebaelishmockingbird · 15/09/2015 07:14

I have done this to DD, she was facing the chair and me behind the chair , I thought she was standing but she was semi kneeling on it, I pulled and twisted it for me to sit on and she obviously then had no balance and fell face first onto the chair corner. All total accident. It is so easily done but horrible when you see them injured. Hope your ds is ok.

00100001 · 15/09/2015 07:26

wha is "red flag" about this situation?

the injury happened.

staff told you how it happened, showed you the accident book and apologised.

Also "it hasn't healed yet" huh? Confused how quick do you think cuts get healed?

Kennington · 15/09/2015 07:30

My child runs about a lot and is always falling over and is covered in scrapes. I would worry much more if they hadn't mentioned anything.
I sign the accident book at least a couple of times per month. But my child is very boisterous.

Eva50 · 15/09/2015 07:39

It sounds like an accident. Ds3 was hit in the face with a frisbee thrown by the nursery teacher (amazing diagonal bruise but he does have very pale skin), he fell off some stacked chairs gashing his chin on a table (A&E), got his fingers trapped between two chairs and was badly bitten by another child. I wasn't very pleased at any of it but accepted they ware simply accidents.

DoreenLethal · 15/09/2015 07:47

OP - just ask the teacher how it happened exactly.
