Dishwasher - cutlery handles up or down

In light of the other cutlery thread......

I always put the cutlery into the dishwasher basket with the handle sticking up. Really annoys me when I'm empyting someone's dishwasher and the fork prongs dig into my hand. Also, I don't like handling the bits that people will be putting into their mouths.

What's your preference?

All handles down, in order to get the business end actually clean.

I do handles down because otherwise they don't come out clean enough if you've eaten something a bit sticky. The dishwasher instructions say handles up though.
Our sharp knives don't go in the dishwasher.

I have a Miele 70... with a tray for cutlery

Handles up. I don't like the idea of something you put in your mouth being shoved in a corner where it may not get cleaned as well. There are no small kids around and we've survived without accidents for a few decades so far.

Down so that the dirty end gets cleaned properly.

Miele cutlery tray by preference though

Handles up for knives, handles down for forks and spoons. My mum's dog once cut her eye on a knife in the dishwasher when my mum was loading the machine and the dog fancied a lick of a plate in there. She kept the eye but it was a horrible accident. Knifes always down now. An accident only takes a second. Tbh I'd do the same with forks but they won't fit in handle up!

I was a handles up gal, but now I have a tray

BeautifulBatman · 13/09/2015 14:26

Everything goes handles up in mine.

JohnCusacksWife · 13/09/2015 14:27

Handles up since I heard of an incident where a woman died after tripping and falling on a knife sticking up from her dishwasher.

I have a tray and have had for years now but always handles up when loading MILs or in holiday cottages mainly because we have lots of excitable kids running around and an accident prone granny so sharp things pointing upwards is asking for disaster

miaowroar · 13/09/2015 14:31

Handles up for everything.

Have never noticed anything coming out dirty because it was pointing downwards.
