To not care about an accent

NoExScoose · 12/09/2015 01:38

Not really a taat but see so many about accents that annoy. Aibu not to give a shit about the accent as long as the person is decent and has something sensible to say? Btw my accent is one of the annoying ones (Scouse) I can't say I care

It is a strange form of selective deafness isn't it?!

Sorry, you're quite right about the SW accent. Anything up to Cardigan Bay on one side, and Wrexham on the other, grates on me. If I had to chose though, Cardiff is the worst for me, like nails on a chalk board.

TiredButFineODFOJ · 13/09/2015 00:04

What is potent? I've never heard this one! Well it's a bit of a scouse take over isn't it. I agree, I can't stand "lid" and "trabs". Much prefer the original scouse like traineeees an proply, not meffy new words.

ReRegRhonda · 14/09/2015 05:43

Potent I believe means good, I hate it when words are blatantly used in the wrong context. I have to say, I used to work in McDonald's and the amount of customers who genuinely asked me what part of Ireland I'm from was staggering. Even my colleagues who know where I'm from all called me 'Irish' as a nickname because I apparently sound Irish. I can see why a Scouse person could be mistaken for Irish but I definitely was nowhere near the most Scouse person in there so I can't really work it out!

damselinthisdress · 14/09/2015 06:43

I love accents. People always moan about mine (North London, so a bit common but not quite cockney and some words sound a little bit "posh".) "Speak properly!" they say. "Fuck off" I say. Grin There are some accents that do grate on me too though, so I do empathise with people that find mine annoying. I find Glaswegian and Northern Irish accents harsh and difficult to understand.

I love trying to guess where people's accents are from. Not aloud, because that would be really annoying, but I spend ages trying to work it out and wait for it to come up in conversation.

NobodyLivesHere · 14/09/2015 06:49

mrsgently I cant decide if you are pointing out that all of wales bugs you, or if you genuinely dont realise that wrexham is in the north...Grin

NotMeNotYouNotAnyone · 14/09/2015 08:32

I find accents interesting but there are some that grate on me. I've based my decision on summer camp next year on which accent I would rather hear for a week Blush in my defence, I had no real preference otherwise, I wouldn't have not done something I wanted to just because of the accent!

hattyhatter · 14/09/2015 08:45

"Speak properly!" they say. "Fuck off" I say.

Pfft Wrexham is just about north, the wannabees. All true Welsh people know 'the proper North' means the coast and Gwynedd Wink.

lushilaoshi · 14/09/2015 12:39

I like accents, and it's shame a lot of UK regional accents are gradually dying out. You hardly ever hear a proper East Anglian accent any more -Toosdee, toona etc.

There are some foreign accents I just cannot stand though. French accents just make me want to scratch my own eyes out, and Indian/Pakistani accents can be very difficult to understand.

Mrsjayy · 14/09/2015 13:45

Least they recognise your accent to hate on that thread they all love a scottish accent like its 1 generic accent Hmm

Aye the next town to me have different accents not that i think folk should be that specific but a whole country doesnt sound the same.

Micah · 14/09/2015 14:21

Like I said on the other thread, it's not the accent that I don't like, but the failure to speak/use grammar properly.

For example a London accent is fine, but when someone says "you was good in vat fing, wasn't you", I judge.

I don't mind colloquialisms that come with a regional accent either. Just use the correct tense, and learn the difference between "th" and "f" at least. I have a good friend who genuinely doesn't see a difference between "f", "th" and "v". When he asks about "free fings", I don't know whether he means without charge, or more than one.

NobodyLivesHere · 14/09/2015 15:45

poor Wrexham, the north dont want you, the south wont have you....Grin

MrsGentlyBenevolent · 14/09/2015 15:55

NobodyLivesHere -

You have to feel sorry for that whole Mid Wales area actually, they just don't belong anywhere, or do their accents. Still better than being a Scouse Grin. (I am joking, of course. We all know that Mancunian is the real worst accent on these Isles Wink).

sproketmx · 14/09/2015 21:27

Naaaw I like manc too. The one I don't get is a brummie accent. Wee bit difficult for me to get. I dont speak proper unless I have to. Like on here but in my own wee village it's aw scot slang. My kids speak like that too but the older ones can speak proper if u need them to.

Littleoakhorn · 15/09/2015 07:45

How bizarre. An accent is just an accent and I wouldn't ever use it to decide if I like someone or not. Maybe I won't understand everything someone says if it's a strong accent combined with a bit of a dialect, but that's my problem, not theirs. There's nothing wrong with putting a little effort into listening.

My fairly posh London accent has also led to (incorrect) assumptions and judgement by others, but again, that's their loss.

As for "accents are OK so long as people use the right grammar", I'd say that there's a fine line between correct grammar or correct pronunciations and dialects or accents. If someone says "wiv" instead of "with", that's their accent.

damselinthisdress · 15/09/2015 19:45

That's all part of accent and dialect though Micah.

Blackcloudsbrightsky · 15/09/2015 19:50

DH went from a deprived part of the north west to a RG university and dropped his accent within a term because he was fed up of the 'hilarious' remarks. His profession is dominated by RG voiced and although he sounds 'northern' (as do I - or north of Birmingham anyway) he complains constantly about Scouse accents! Hmm Grin
