AIBU? I already know the answer, I think.

If something was planned for the 10th to the 17th but was moved back a week would you think that meant back to the 3rd to 10th or back to the 17th to 24th.

Is moving something from the 10th to the 17th to the 3rd to the 10th moving it back a week or forward a week?

Does this question make any sense at all?

Moving it back makes it later than planned. Moving it forward makes it earlier than planned.

RaspberryOverload · 11/09/2015 19:53

Moving a date back is to push it later, ie in your example moving back to the 17th to 24th.

Moving a date forward is to bring is nearer to today, ie moving forward to 3rd to 10th

sadwidow28 · 11/09/2015 19:55

"Moving back" is 17th to 24th

"Bringing forward" is 3rd to 10th

That is good business lingo

Scarletforya · 11/09/2015 19:55

Moving it back is making it a week earlier, so 3rd to the 10th. Time is linear. Back is reversing time. Forward is advancing time.

Moving it back makes it further away so the later dates, moving it forward makes it closer so the earlier week

sadwidow28 · 11/09/2015 19:58

Oh please tell us this is a hen night, wedding or something else we can really get our teeth into.

More details needed OP Grin

Twirlypoos · 11/09/2015 19:58

And the front train is the first to leave :)

You are, of course, right and your dp is wrong Smile

MyNewBearTotoro · 11/09/2015 20:01

My initial thought was moving back would be 3rd - 10th although thinking about it a bit more can see how it would be 17th - 24th.

Either way I think it's a bit ambiguous and it's probably better to confirm with dates!

twirlypoo · 11/09/2015 20:08

Twirlypoos I just saw your name and totally freaked out because I couldn't remember typing that Grin

CatMilkMan · 11/09/2015 20:19

It's sort of hen night related! DP was supposed to be going out with friends to celebrate an engagement next week but it "got moved back" a week and only just found out it's tonight and not the week after the original week.

Put back = postpone, so moved to the later week (17th - 24th).

Nothing else makes any sense. If it was going to be the earlier week you would have been bringing it forward.

DoreenLethal · 11/09/2015 20:23

I have no idea how moving anything 'back' can mean it coming forward. Unless they are pushing from behind.

Scarletforya · 11/09/2015 20:23

Illogical !

OneMoreForExtra · 11/09/2015 20:26

But, you see, it all depends which way the date is facing.

You face forwards, right? So, standing on the date and looking into the future, back means going to an earlier date and forward means a later, ie further into the future where you're facing, date.

I have trouble with maps unless I can turn them round to match the actual topography too...

Twirlypoos · 11/09/2015 20:29

Aaah ;) I'm sorry will nc

twirlypoo · 11/09/2015 20:33

Oh god no! That wasn't at all what I meant - please don't nc on my behalf! I was confused about how Id written so much and couldn't remember doing it Grin

There is more than enough twirly poo to go around, and we clearly both have awesome taste in usernames!

Twirlypoos · 11/09/2015 20:37

:) thank you. It's okay though, it might get confusing and this is a recent name

Crispbutty · 11/09/2015 20:38

Back = later
Forward = earlier

So it was moved forward

OneDay103 · 11/09/2015 20:38

Dh says move forward, I say previous week. Guess we will have to be very specific when changing plans Grin

goawayalready · 11/09/2015 20:39

bring it forward to 3rd- move it back to 17th

i would however confirm it verbally

Pedestriana · 11/09/2015 20:40

Moving an event back a week would imply moving to a week later than originally intended. Moving it forward a week would imply bringing it a week nearer to the present time. So your example of moving an event from 10-17th to the new dates of 17-24th is moving something back a week.

It's not the same as moving a clock back, when you make it 10 seconds/5 minutes/1hr earlier.
