Has anybody tried Sainsbury's recipe ideas? Coffee or chocolate in your spag bol? Sorry, what?

Oh, yes, as if I have dark chocolate sitting about at home or wine to cook with... yeah, right!

It's not that weird at all! Choc is a traditional addition to stews and chillies in Mexico, especially a 'mole'. Coffee is similar in that it adds depth to the flavour. Try it!

Coffee is normal as is chocolate in Mexican food.

I thought the horseradish in Maceroni cheese sounded shite though

We had chocolate and coffee in our chilli tonight - and it was lovely if I do say so myself Wink

I rather like the idea of horseradish in macaroni cheese. I put mustard in anyway.

I like horseradish on cheese-on-toast.

Chocolate makes chilli amazing.

I have been known to put cocoa powder in my chili before! Didn't make any difference so perhaps I didn't put enough?

Ok - I'll have to try it!

I don't like regular macaroni cheese, a bit of horseradish to cut through the richness of the cheese might be just the thing, I love horseradish.

They were suggesting chorizo in lasagne over the tannoy today, no thanks, that woukd ruin it.

Horseradish in macaroni cheese sounds so offensive I don't think I will ever shop at sainsburys again . The others I understand but horseradish sounds like a mistake, surely mustard is better?

My dad heard about adding cocoa to chilli but he was a bit drunk when cooking (functioning alcoholic) and put half a tub of cadburys drinking chocolate in....it was foul! How much coffee do you add?

I put a teaspoon of instant coffee in the chilli, and 4 squares of dark chocolate. I can't stand coffee and I'm not all that keen on dark chocolate but they go well in a chilli Smile

The horseradish things sounds absolutely bloody revolting.

I always add dark chocolate to our chilli, and also to spag bol. Not too keen on the horseradish

Thecold, that's interesting. I have never drank coffee, so it seems a bit pointless to me.

I have added chocolate to rich tomato sauce before. I think it was a "thing" about 20 years ago...

Feel old now!

Horseradish in a cheese sauce is amazing. Years ago sainsburys used to do a cream cheese with horseradish, I still miss it!

They've just been chucking stuff into their ads that tv chefs have being suggesting for the odd decade, that they have got from ideas for more traditional cooking. Coffee or high % dark chocolate and meat or chilli is well known. If mustard goes with cheese sauce, then so does horseradish. I love horseradish and marmite goes with sooo much.

Many of the things they suggest are those little background flavours to replace things like star anise, or balsamic, or juniper, any other vinegar, wine.
