It used to be all the time that take aways did charity promotions, KFC pink bucket to cure breast cancer, McDonalds meal to provide drinking water. But these days you rarely see it. Would really influence my Friday night treat choice. Not sure if its because companies are shunning corporate responsibility or if people really are that selfish these days.

I thought you meant charitable as in less generous with the free prawn crackers.
I'll get my coat.

CarmenMonoxide · 05/09/2015 08:31

With regard to the McDonalds charity, they put the collection boxes in their restaurants but make no financial contribution to the Ronald McDonald houses.

fastdaytears · 05/09/2015 08:34

Carmen McDonalds the company might not (I don't know) but I know a lot of McDonalds franchise holders do.

CarmenMonoxide · 05/09/2015 08:39

What charitable donations franchise holders make is entirely their own decision.
I was just clarifying the widely held belief that as a company, McDonalds makes any financial contribution to the Ronald McDonald houses, because it doesn't.

When my son was in intensive care the Ronald MacDonald house saved me.
The hospital was 4 hour journey from home.
The Ronald MacDonald house enabled me to stay by his side every day and also to get some much needed sleep.
They also bring in volunteers to treat the parents which is nice, because many people are there long term.
When I was there I met a lovely couple who had been living in the Ronald McDonald house for 6 months. They help families both short term and long term and when you have a sick child, their help and support is invaluable

CarmenMonoxide · 05/09/2015 08:43

Indeed whattodohatethis, they are great places, invaluable when you have a sick child.

whattodohatethis · 05/09/2015 08:43

And McDonalds do contribute financially

Sounds like they do a lot to support them.

Pepperpot99 · 05/09/2015 08:45

Stackladys why is it 'naive' to believe that large companies should pay tax? why do you have a problem with this?

CarmenMonoxide · 05/09/2015 08:47

Completely conflicting with the literature I received from my recent stay at a Roanld McDonald house. What can I say?

CarmenMonoxide · 05/09/2015 08:47

ffs I wasn't having a go.

blaeberry · 05/09/2015 08:59

Pepperpot you need to have the company based in your county in the first place if you want them to pay tax. And I mean having HQ there not just the odd branch. Companies take different tax regimes very seriously when deciding where to base themselves. Hence the real thing that ties any governments hands is attracting companies (and their jobs) to the country.

whattodohatethis · 05/09/2015 09:04

Carmen? Was it Alder Hey?
The Ronald MacDonald house at Alder Hey is under a separate charity, they aren't in the Ronald MacDonald group.
Could that be what has caused confusion?

blaeberry · 05/09/2015 09:04

If I remember correctly, I think Nicola was proposing reducing the amount of tax companies pay.
