to be pleasantly surprised at/hope that this recent surge of sympathy for migrants seems to have shut all the Britain First propaganda down?

Just that, really.

I often go on the Britain First page and look in horror at some of the stuff they write. Also I have a few idiots people on my Facebook friend list who share all the bigoted racist guff that britain first (and other pages like it) post.

Anyway, since poor Aylan washed up on the shore and there has been an outcry of sympathy on all levels, political to personal, I have noticed a huge reduction in those stupid "britain is only for those born and bred" posts and statuses.

AIBU (or idealistic) to think these pictures/decisions will shut them down for good?

I don't know, just checking the local fb page for where and what donations are needed in our town and some of the comments about, 'charity beginning at home', 'drains on resources' and querying why refugees should have 'luxury items' donated - it is just depressing.

50, when you click on a Facebook page it click gets 'recorded' and the page admin can view stats to see how many people have clicked on their page/individual posts and where abouts in the world their page is reaching. That's what people mean when they say don't give them clicks.

I was thinking the same but have just spent hours battling with the brazen idiots posting on a similar topic in an FB page devoted to my local town. 'We're full up', 'Them Muslims are flooding our country' and 'They're sneaking in IS from Calais'. Also apparently this will cause the NHS to collapse (not poor long term funding or prioritising). Their arguments are pure unfiltered Daily Heil bile and are conflated with a whole load of other issues that don't bear scrutiny. It's exhausting just reading the comma-less posts let alone answering them. Thankfully other people are making an effort to help including creating a Calaid / Kos Kindness depot and signing petitions.

thanks for educating me about the clicks! Will not be going on to that page anymore

I’ve always though we were relatively moderate country(and still do) but I think FB gives you an insight into peoples thoughts. It’s quite easy for the right wing nut jobs to reach an audience. In the 70’s you would never have taken a pamphlet off a national front member in the street but a Britain First post is on your screen all the time. I used to be a soldier and it’s truly depressing how small minded the older generation from my regiment really are. The comrades association FB Page is awash with propaganda from the lunatic right.

Another issue is the fact that the lunatic fringe can disguise themselves as benign organisations. There is a charity called Soldiers off The Streets, it aims to get homes for ex servicemen who are homeless. Sounds great doesn’t it? It was founded by individuals who used to be part of the inner circle of the BNP. I’m not saying that they are anything less than genuine in their aims but I’m not giving them any money.
