To ask people to turn off autocorrect

wasonthelist · 04/09/2015 15:26

In the middle of about 80% of juicy AIBU threads is at least one sentence that makes no sense at all, because one or more word(s) has been autocorrected to something totally unrelated. Of course, some can be guessed, but far from all. We are descending into a pit of total gobbledegook.

oh yes I'd forgotten about the weeping bicycle monkeys - that was brilliant

OrangeFluff · 04/09/2015 18:57

Weeping bicycle monkeys! Wasn't that where the neighbours were on holiday and expected the OP to provide electricity, tea and toilet facilities to workmen in their garden? Great thread!

PursuitOfNappiness · 04/09/2015 19:09

I love autocorrect, it makes conversations much more fun.

DH text me on way home from work asking what was for dinner, I replied "spag bowl" but my phone told him "slag bowl".

He got home quicker than usual that night...

bolleauxnouveau · 04/09/2015 19:15

I've seen epi-pen autocorrected as epic penis...I can't say if their effects would be similar..

mumofboyo · 04/09/2015 19:41

Yabu. I love reading the auto-correct fails - they always brighten up my day. Also, without auto-correct, I wouldn't be able to use this fancy swiping text thing which makes sending messages so much quicker and easier lazy

LynetteScavo · 04/09/2015 19:45

Without auto correct and spell check you wouldn't have a clue what I was trying to say. So for that reason, YABU.

mumofboyo · 04/09/2015 19:46

Oh, and I also remember a post where the title was something like, 'I've just plucked a hair out of my bum,' and the poster told us she was sitting on a deckchair in her garden. All those who replied were like Confused until the op realised her error and corrected it to arm! Made my day!

RolyPolierThanThou · 04/09/2015 19:46

But why is it called autocorrect when it so rarely is? My phone (Android) denies all knowledge of autocorrect, because every time I try to say autocorrect, it replaces it with skyrocketed, strictest or sufficiency.

Watto1 · 04/09/2015 19:54

I love autocorrect howlers! I once started a thread about 'tea toilet' glasses (reactolite) and told an anecdote about my 'nectarines-door' neighbours (next-door). I have also texted dh to tell him I will be home at 6 fish (6ish) and urged a friend going through a tough time to 'stay string' (strong).

Autocorrect is responsible for some absolute howlers! Love it.

A couple of years ago when we had a really cold winter I saw a post doing the rounds on FB. It was purported to have been a message from a headmistress of a primary school to parents. It intended to say that school was open as usual, but that children could come in wellies that day to help get through the snow. However, autocorrect had changed wellies to willies and the teacher had not seen it before hitting send. Grin

So, she had just permitted all children to come to school in willies that day. She did send out a correction/apology a few minutes later in which she blamed autocorrect, but I don't imagine she lived that one down for a long time. Grin Having grown up in a teaching background, I know what an unforgiving place a school staffroom would be with that sort of thing. Relentless, I am sure.

FrancesOldhamKelseyRIP · 04/09/2015 20:56

I live for the threads where pg women are told to buy lots of Muslims for their newborn babies because they're so useful.

FrancesOldhamKelseyRIP · 04/09/2015 20:57

And yes I did type m u s l i n s in the previous post Grin

ohmyeyebettymartin · 04/09/2015 21:01

Yy Frances - "put a Muslim over her face to help her sleep" etc Grin

wasonthelist · 07/09/2015 20:32

OK I take it all back -but only if autocorrect caused this -

"When these things happen my first thought is to hope it moves out of the way but to just remain as I am and don't do anything harshly. I do run over a lot of peasants that I don't feel great about but they do just wonder into the road."

wasn't 'unexpected item in the shagging area' an autocorrect fail?

bolleauxnouveau · 07/09/2015 23:17

Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between autocorrect and falling educational standards. Wink

TeamBacon · 07/09/2015 23:20

Cock off

... Wait

unlucky83 · 07/09/2015 23:29

My autocorrect corrects eg 6 ish to 6 Isherwood - I don't know anyone with that name, I have never typed that name ...where oh where did it come from? (It pisses me off every time Grin)
I quite like autocorrect though...it is a good excuse. When I type quickly on a keyboard I do it without thinking and often my fingers type the wrong word (eg one I can remember is I recently typed 'problem' instead of 'probably ' -or vice a versa)
I think 'duh' - should slow down and proof read better - then think never mind everyone will think it is just an autocorrect ...

ceyes03 · 08/09/2015 08:06

YANBU, it drives me mad and I've never seen it more prevalent anywhere than here.

What I don't understand is why people make a mistake and then say in the next post "that should have been xyz" (although nine times out of ten it's bloody "that should of been xyz", of course). If you can take the time to check it after you've posted, why in god's name can you not be bothered to check it before you post and save everyone the aggro of having to read crap that makes no sense? It's really bloody rude.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 20/11/2015 17:17

Despite these very funny fails, I've just turned off my auto-correct, spell check etc and now have to get used to adding my own capital letters and full stops. migth regret this! Aggh - already regretting it!

CigarsofthePharoahs · 20/11/2015 17:30

Without autocorrect we wouldn't have had the mayonnaise thread.
I'm also still trying to work out what an anger and Oreo cheesecake is. A friend sent me a picture of one on a WhatsApp group and we've all been too polite to ask.
Without autocorrect I'd have to put in all the apostrophes and I'm too too lazy for that.
