To use a tin of soup two years past its use-by date?

Was going to make veggie chilli tonight. Checked the cupboard for kidney or similar beans, but have none. I do however have a tin of chunky chilli bean soup, which would do the job.

However, the expiry date is September 2013.

I'm generally pretty lax about use-by dates, and I'm pretty sure tinned goods basically last forever, but not sure if it's worth risking it when a tin of kidney beans can be obtained for about 50p.

Will go with the majority vote!

It'll be a best before date, not a use by date, but 2 years past its best when tinned soup generally has a shelf life of 2 years is pretty drastic. It's a looooong way past its best.

Bin it. Soup isn't an ingredient for chilli, anyhow.

I'd have thought it would be fine. Has anyone checked the dates on herbs and spices in cupboards lately? I had a clear out a while back and found a jar of ginger 4 years past its sell by date, I obviously didn't use it enough.

OddSocksHighHeels · 04/09/2015 14:59

quiet I did check once, a few months back, and had loads of herbs and spices that were years out of date. I still used them though, tasted fine and no harm.

OH MY FUCKING GOD.

wasonthelist you reminded me of something.
I watched a program about,or included fish being frozen for years in big blocks in a freezer warehouse. Wonder how long the fish in fish fingers has really been frozen for?
This was a few years back if someone remembers.

I must admit odd that I would have kept the ginger if DH hadn't been looking over my shoulder. He's really funny about dates on stuff whereas I hate the thought of something going to waste if it's edible, with the exception of meat.

AnotherTimeMaybe · 04/09/2015 15:11

mackerel disgusting !!! Who the hell buys these stuff!

Quietlifenotonyournelly · 04/09/2015 15:12

Boak

OddSocksHighHeels · 04/09/2015 15:15

mackerel thanks for that. I opened it while eating a chicken sandwich Grin

quiet yes I hate waste too. I'd always be careful with fresh items, so smiff or take a small taste first, but tins and seasonings don't bother me at all. Shame your DH was looking.

NKFell · 04/09/2015 15:22

I rarely look at dates- love the old sniff test!

I'd use the tin ha

A tinned chicken Shock

Quietlifenotonyournelly · 04/09/2015 15:28

odd there are many times he doesn't know about Grin

RedZeppelin · 04/09/2015 15:32

You'll be fine.

I used a tin of coconut milk for a chicken korma last night - BBE Nov-2008!! It had solidified a bit but smelt normal and the resulting korma was delicious - best ever according to the children Grin

AnotherTimeMaybe · 04/09/2015 15:36

quiet my Dh is funny with dates too, he actually asks me every few days if what I'm cooking has expired or is expiring today Hmm
I have to admit it is annoying but he did admit that he caught his mum cooking expired stuff millions of times and now he has an OCD about it hence I'm getting all the shit!
So definitely nothing expired used in my house!

SlowlyGoingINSAINIA · 04/09/2015 15:41

A canned whole chicken?! Wtf is wrong with some people. Yuk!

This thread has just brought back some comical moments from before my GM passed away.
The one I thought of which was relevant to this post was after my GF died, GM used to go to the butchers and almost daily so had never used a freezer before. My DF bought her one thinking that in winter when there was snow or bad weather she could just have a frozen supply of food just in case she couldn't get out or one of us couldn't make it over to hers to take her shopping. Anyway after some time I noticed that the freezer was getting fuller and nothing was getting used so I mentioned this to her.
Her reply was 'Quiet, I know your DF was trying to be helpful when he got me this freezer but it's all out of date'.
Turns out that she thought that the dates she had put on things in freezer were the use by dates.
Always makes me Smile thinking of that now.

OddSocksHighHeels · 04/09/2015 18:03

quiet I love that story! Bless her, you never realise you have to explain certain things to people when the object you're discussing is something so everyday to you.

Quietlifenotonyournelly · 04/09/2015 18:27

It was funny because it was an completely innocent answer to my question.
