To worry about post 16 child tax credits notice

I am on my own and don't earn a great deal but have just received a notice saying that my 16 year old child is no longer a child for child tax purposes even though I have told them twice that my child is doing A levels. I could cry as my payments will stop.

Ring them. There's a recorded message about it on helpline

Sounds like they've got it wrong. As long as your child is still in approved education and not getting any benefits themself, you should still be getting tax credits for them.
Go to Citizens advice, they'll help you sort it out.

I sympathise. I've had the same. I've phoned them twice before now but they still send my amended notice saying payment will stop as its now the September after she turned 16.

I'm going to phone them on Monday as she formally registered with sixth form college yesterday, so I'm hoping that might trigger the change. I'm hoping it's just because she hadn't actually started college that they didn't change it before now. Hmm

I told them and then phoned back and they looked it up and confirmed it had changed. I cannot afford for my weekly payment to stop

Going through this myself again as I had to last year and a couple of years ago they stop your claim for the 16 year old at the end of august but reinstate it for the beginning of September my payment was short this week due to this but it will be sorted out within a couple of weeks total pain in the backside but this is what has happened with all of mine as they have hit 16 and again at 17 to the one who was at college. so as long as you have told them about your child staying on it will be sorted

Sigh.
I've only been back on TC for a few weeks after getting shot of DH and had just about worked out a budget where we could pay the bills and eat.
Today's letter tells me my payments are being reduced by £120 per month 'because a change in my circumstances means I have received too much so far this year.' The only change is the non change of DS staying in college.
I have no fucking clue what to do next and I suspect nor do they- I can't get through to check either way Sad

cosytoaster · 03/09/2015 21:38

I'm in the same boat. I've told them twice that DS is staying on to do A levels, they confirmed that they had it on record and yet drastic reduction in payment today.

Tax credits are currently having issues with how they are recording post 16's in education.

Check you have filled out the post 16 for, for CB then check TC have accepted the information. Most people effected by this will be receiving new award notices issued and sent just after 31/8 so any day now.

Basically they are automatically changing the circumstances (to not a child for tc ) then changing it back on 31/8 as long as they have him recorded as in education on 31/8 this will be rectified fairly quickly.

ditto

mine was down over a £100 this week but i knew about the silly system

what i dont know is when they catch up will it be £100 x how many weeks lost or do they split it over the rest of the tax year

ticklemetipsy · 03/09/2015 23:10

I think the issue stems from them classing them as qualifying children under 16 and then as qualifying young person over the age of 16 it seems a very annoying way to deal with it but we have always got the money back some times paid over the rest of the year sometimes as a lump sum
