SHould I report neighbours dog for this?

On sunday my little boy (2) sneaked in to the neighbours garden. The neighbour let his 5 dogs out and they surrounded my boy barking, snapping and snarling at him. The dogs are not very well trained but usually the neighbour would call them back. This time he made no attempt to call them back, I had to grab my boy who was bawling and shaking like a leaf. The neighbour jsut gave me a foul look.

I am constantly telling my boy not to go in there, he is well aware he shouldn't. THE only good thing is he might not try to get in There again. I am absolutely livid that the neighbour seemed to be letting his dogs scare my child like that!

Should I report it?

there is more to the story, too. We are farmers and our fields surround these neighbours, I have also had 3 sheep killed and 7 aborted since these neighbours moved in. I have reported the worrying to the police (you should always do that) but I don't know for certain it was them. Judging by Sunday I have suspicions now that it was them.

No fear it's not unusual for an ss follow up when a kid goes awol and the police/authorities are involved, although afaik it's usually just as a one off just doing their job visit. Except many sws would have a bit of a culture shock at what is considered safe practice for toddlers brought up on farms, and perhaps ask a few more questions than normal to make sure everything was ok. However even a sw with a fluffy idea farms are like petting zoos would be concerned about the actual reality when they visited a 2yr old regularly unsupervised on one and free to roam at will. And one with actual farming knowledge wouldn't need that much to convince them op needs educating about safety.

This morning I let my dogs out in to the garden and went to make a cup of tea. I heard them barking but assumed they were barking at a cat or some other animal so didn't go to check on them immediately. We live in the country and our nearest neighbours are a nearby farm so the dogs barking weren't disturbing anyone. The dogs continued to bark so I went to see what they were barking at and saw our neighbours child in our garden. His mum retrieved him just seconds later but this isn't the first time she's let him run loose. At first I didn't mind too much I'm getting a bit fed up with it happening especially as she seems to think it's not her responsibility to keep an eye on her child so I give her a dirty look, a bit childish I know but there you go. I didn't call my dogs back because by this time she was removing her child from the garden but AIBU to think she should keep an eye on her child at all times and not let him keep coming into my garden?

As an aside, am I the only one who is shocked that the OP had an unrestrained 2yr with her while moving a bull from A to B?

I canconfirm as a dog owner whoe dog barked at someone in my garden that if they make a complaint police will visit. My dog didnt bite but frightened the adult intruder. Yes they should have called dogs off it must have been very frightening What did you say todog owner, if i thought someone "set" 5 dogs on my toddler son I would have addressed it. That said this is not the 1st time he has gone into their garden on that needs addressing Asap

I don't understand what the op would expect the police to do of it was report. Your child trespassed into a neighbours property and their dogs barked and snared but did not harm. What law exactly has the neighbour broke to have a police report filed against them? I fail to understand

RockerMummy184 · 04/09/2015 16:14

I think, since all this happened on Sunday, that the OP and her son can't have been that traumatized by the whole episode or it would have been reported and posted on MN far sooner than Thursday evening.

Glad to know I'm not the only one Grin

I freely admit to being a townie never having lived in the country so I know very little about the countryside but it didn't sound safe to me.

eatyouwithaspoon · 04/09/2015 17:07

notaprincess the police will visit as there was a "dog out of control" the fact that it is on their property and didnt bite would be irrelevant in my experience! I was visited by the police when my dog barked at someone who entered my secure garden uninvited although the dog did nothing other than give them a fright when it barked at them. The police were fine about it as we had done nothing wrong but had to follow up on the complaint. The law changed last year due to all the incidents of people getting attacked by dogs on private property. Dog owners beware!

I recently saw a toddler on a retractable dog lead and a reins harness being used very successfully on a farm with his mum. Maybe worth a thought.

Scoobydoo494 · 04/09/2015 17:18

You can report them by all means but why an earth are you blaming the owner when your child got into their garden? That is the dogs home not his. Why wasn't the child being supervised? But for your other concerns, id report them.

Lurkedforever1 · 04/09/2015 17:51

missing her lax farm safety is exactly why I've been having a go.

ElkeDagMeisje · 04/09/2015 18:07

I'm just wondering why she was putting a bull in with cows at the beginning of September? Do DEFRA even allow that??

sanfairyanne · 04/09/2015 18:48

Its all a load of all bull imo
