AIBU to be scared ****less?

I am a mid-40s SAHM.

I have been home for more than 8 years, since my DD's medical needs increased to the point that we could not find a carer for her, and her condition was so unstable that she could go from happy and playing at home to life support in ICU in a matter of a couple of hours.

However, she has stabilised a lot in the last 2 years, and I got it into my head that I might want to consider returning to work.

So, on Tuesday afternoon, I sat down at my computer and filled out the application package for a staffing agency in town. I didn't expect much to come of it - having a CV with more than an 8 year gap doesn't make you the most attractive candidate in an "employer's market".

I figured that I would get ample practice applying, and perhaps a few interviews with the ubiquitous "thanks, but you are not the right fit for our organisation old lady with outdated skills ".

However, the recruiter rang me yesterday morning, less than 24 hours after I had submitted my information, and proceeded to do a full phone interview with me on the spot. She invited me in to meet the representative from the company she is recruiting for this afternoon, but essentially, the agency hires, the client only "rubber stamps" the successful candidates.

She send me an e-mail to follow up on our conversation that essentially said I had been successful and based on my presentation and background I had been earmarked for a supervisory or training position.

So, am I totally nuts to be terrified that this isn't following the timeline I had imagined in my happy delirium? What makes this particularly eyebrow raising is that the compensation for this position will suddenly put me as the top earner in the household.

Gasp Final interview for this position is in 4 hours.

Remind me to breathe.

Great news but...
I am a pessimist, i am worrying they must be a shit employer to need staff this urgently and so many.

So don't sign any long term childcare contracts.

iPaid · 03/09/2015 15:57

Well done - let us know how you get on Flowers

strongandlong · 03/09/2015 15:58

Penfold007 · 03/09/2015 16:01

Congratulations! You will be fine.

I'm a bit skeptical about this too. Have you googled the company? A 24 hour turnaround for a training or supervisory position with only a telephone interview and no references taken up sounds fishy to me. Plus being vague on which job they're giving you.

I think it could possibly be one of these scams where they fool you into thinking you've got a proper job but it's actually chugging/door to door/cold calling with only commission on sales.

Have you clarified with them exactly what the job entails and what the terms and remuneration are?

CallMeExhausted · 03/09/2015 16:05

0x530 They are hiring for a new contract - and I have already talked to a number of their employees. I am a pessimist too...

I will let you all know how it goes.

I am fully aware of the responsibilities of the position, as well as remuneration, training schedule, the company that is doing the hiring and the company they are hiring for (which is a highly regarded multinational). There are no sales or commissions, and benefits are clearly outlined.

The initial position is guaranteed - training or supervisory will be determined either today or within the first week or training.

It's not my first rodeo - I just think I might have been the right person who showed up with the right background and qualifications at the right time, and the "speed" might be coincidental, as the executive I am meeting with today has travelled to vet candidates.

It sounds like you've had a tough few years and deserve some good fortune. Good luck.

HellKitty · 03/09/2015 17:00

Be positive!
After years as a sahm and then working crazy hours and cleaning jobs as a LP, freelancing and bits of work here and there my CV looked like Swiss cheese. I went for an interview as a P/T cashier and came out of the interview as a F/T assistant manager. No idea how that happened!

I don't work there anymore but was amazed and thankful that there are quite a few companies giving us oldies a chance Blush

slithytove · 03/09/2015 18:13

This situation happened to me three weeks ago.

I was occasionally thinking of returning to work after Christmas, (left work 3 years ago) but a job offer basically fell in to my lap. The interview was pretty much a formality.

I started a week after interview and have been totally thrown in at the deep end, but I love it. I have something to talk about again. I can be me, not mummy.

Best of luck.

ThomasRichard · 03/09/2015 18:24

Good luck OP, it sounds fantastic.

Allice · 03/09/2015 18:26

Good luck! Remember to come back and update us please.

Youarentkiddingme · 03/09/2015 18:37

Best of luck.

And remember, the role you've had a sahm to a child with significant needs shows a massive skills set you've most likely overlooked. You've had an organisational and supervisory role in the household - just because it's for your own family doesn't mean you've not got the experience or skills.

CallMeExhausted · 04/09/2015 04:01

Sorry for the late update, I am on the other side of the pond, so am just settling now.

I got it! Formally, I am an entry level consultant now, but have been told that could change in the first two weeks.

Pay is reasonable, benefits are decent, I am really, really happy (even though my mind is racing).

The first thing I did after leaving the office today was to hit the charity shop for some business attire - after 8 years of being at home, pickings were slim in my wardrobe.

DH and I went out for a celebratory dinner tonight, this weekend is business as usual, and I start at 8am Tuesday (because Monday is a holiday here).

Wow.
