AIBU to think that its is not necessary to give each child Sky TV

My DP has a 7 year old son who stays with us 3 nights a week. My DC are 11 & 8, so all are watching different age ranges on tv. I think they should work it out between them and take it in turns, until 8pm when it is adult time. DP thinks that we should get each of the children Sky in their rooms, at a cost of £30 a month. I think that it is unnecessary and indulgent for the amount of time they actually watch tv. I also think that they should be doing other things apart from being glued to the TV. We have recently had a sky box put in our bedroom, so they can have more access to their programmes downstairs. Here is the thing though, regardless of the cost and lifestyle issues, sky can only install four boxes maximum. So we would have to give up having our own sky box in our room, which is a treat for me, that I pay for. We would have 3 children in their own rooms, watching Sky and I wouldn't be able to in our room. I have bought a trampoline for the garden to encourage them outdoors and each of them have ipads with Sky go on them , so can access all the channels.

AIBU to think that it is firstly not necessary and secondly why should I not have sky tv in my room, but the kids each have their own?

Giving a 7 year old SKY on their own TV in their room???

Is DP on glue??? Confused

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 02/09/2015 18:58

DD just turned 8 and just got a small tv in her room, that said she can only watch DVD's on it, so she doesnt watch it that much. We have Now TV in my room and the living room. No freeview or sky here. Now TV and Youtube have what we need.

Sky in every room is just ridiculous.

Also seconding not putting money into the pockets of Murdoch! I've not got sky and wouldn't even if I could afford it for that reason alone!!

Verypissedoffwife · 02/09/2015 19:30

We all have tvs in our rooms - children are 15, 15 and 7.

The youngest can just watch Dvds or Netflix on her Ipad. I think it's great - she's learnt loads through shows like horrible histories, number Jacks etc.

None of us have sky in our rooms but I think all the tvs get Netflix. And we do spend a lot of time together (at least when the older 2 are actually here!)

Verypissedoffwife · 02/09/2015 19:32

I think it's considered "common" to have more than one small tv. But as I AM common we have 6. Most of them big Grin

00100001 · 02/09/2015 19:39

I think it's "common~" to have more TVs than people in a house!

TalkinPeace · 02/09/2015 20:10

Its not a class issue : its a health issue : read up on Melatonin response to long term brain health and you will remove all TVs from all bedrooms.

StompyFreckles · 02/09/2015 20:20

Madness to have TVs in childrens' rooms. Your dc are also very lucky to have iPads each imo.

coffeeisnectar · 02/09/2015 22:42

My kids barely watch tv upstairs. Teen uses hers more because she watches eastenders and Wentworth prison and we would rather sniff glue than watch those but 9 year old will sometimes watch a DVD if she has a friend over or its a rainy day. People assume if kids have tvs in their room they are on all the time but my kids prefer being down here with us.

I've got more serious concerns over my dsds laptop usage. She is on that touching 12 hours a day both at home and here. Even when she's back at school it will be about 4 hours a day. Minecraft and Skype. I've voiced my concerns but being ignored.

FuckOffJeffrey · 02/09/2015 23:16

I would say no to having sky in the bedrooms. I have no issues with TV's in bedrooms so long as it's monitored properly. I think if they had access to sky in bedrooms it would make it much harder to limit their TV time. I would let them choose a show each and rotate who goes first each week (so one week first child picks first show, second child picks second show, third child picks next show - following week second child picks first show, third child picks next show etc).

DD has a small tv/ dvd combo in her bedroom (not set up to show tv just DVDs) and she knows no DVD's are not allowed on school nights but gets a dvd for bed on the weekends. She will sometimes have a dvd after school or during the day on holidays when the weather is too miserable to go out and play. She also has our old PS2 hooked up to it but rarely plays on it. The one time she did sneak a dvd on a school night I removed her tv for a week and she never tried it again.

I do understand why some people say no TV's in bedrooms, I don't have one in mine, but honestly when I think of the amount of times I have been spared from watching frozen it's worth it.

TheNewStatesman · 03/09/2015 02:48

I am beginning to understand why such a large percentage of children NEVER read for pleasure.

OP, your husband is nuts. And sorry to be rude, but it sounds like everyone in your house is already watching a lot more TV/ipad than is good for them.

AngelicaDelight · 03/09/2015 03:21

Bedrooms are for sleeping.

No TVs in any bedrooms here, and especially not in children's bedrooms.

anklebitersmum · 03/09/2015 03:34

No telly in the bedrooms here. The eldest used to have one that had no aerial for playing on his xbox but when we moved recently that went by the board too, so he gets a limited amount of time on 'the big telly' in the rumpus room (homework allowing & post the other biters bedtime).

We have an i gadget thingy that streams netflix and a freeview telly in our room but that's a welfare issue as far as the biters are concerned we're in charge, they're not and it's well fair Wink

In summary, YANBU to say 'dream on buttercup' to DP and the children re SKY in all rooms Grin

IAmNotAWitch · 03/09/2015 07:13

No TVs in bedrooms here at all.

Also no Sky, my two seem fine. They do other stuff.

Fooshufflewickbannanapants · 03/09/2015 07:55

No TV in our kids bedrooms either but we do have two in the living room one big one and a little one in the alcove with wireless headphones for xbox but we have 6 kids aged 2-16.

iamanintrovert · 03/09/2015 08:15

Yanbu. We have one TV in the lounge, and no pay TV at all. We survive. There's so many other things that kids can do. Playing outside is so very important.

InimitableJeeves · 03/09/2015 08:41

I'd get rid of Sky altogether, to be honest. Who wants to pay to watch loads of adverts? And the kids need to be watching something other than Nickelodeon and Disney.

Iamatotalandutteridiot · 03/09/2015 08:51

We have Apple TV in both the kids bedrooms. It rarely gets used.

Personally, I think the more you make TV to be a massive deal the more they want it.

My son has ASD and sleeps very badly. His iPad and TV are very necessary for him, and there are times when I just need him to stay in his room and let the rest of us sleep!

My kids don't much watch TV, and I find the kids who aren't allowed it are the ones addicted to it when they come for play dates.

Badders123 · 03/09/2015 09:00

My ds1 (12) begged us for a TV in his room.
In the end we said "ok...you pay for it you can have it"
So he saved up and got a small TV and Blu Ray player (the TV doesn't have an Arerial so he just watches DVDs on it)
Tbh I think he feels it was a waste of money.
He probably watches it for 10 mins before bed each day.
I think he regrets it really.
We have 2 TVs downstairs (one in each room)
The second One gets used for the PS3.
We have Cable. And Netflix.
We use the catch up TV a lot. And iplayer.
I would never have sky as I boycott anything to do with Murdoch.

Reubs15 · 03/09/2015 12:42

I also agree children shouldn't have tv in their rooms it's unnecessary. Good for you getting a trampoline!
There's not that much difference in age. We only had one tv with 7 years between the eldest and youngest and managed just fine. If we argued the tv went off!

willconcern · 03/09/2015 12:46

Ridiculous idea! Actually I think it's ridiculous that they all have their own ipads too.

Plomino · 03/09/2015 12:49

As above , but what you pay is the cost of the box, and then about a tenner extra on the bill each month for each extra box . So about 200 quid for the extra box , but possibly not as they do do deals - our kitchen one was free - and then about a tenner more .
