Restaurant was in Amsterdam but I felt it was patronising to women advertising a twee steak that was edible for a "lady" and also I guffawed as it seemed quite rude too.

I'm sorry, I shouldn't laugh, but as PP said, if this is what you've found sexist in Amsterdam I think you need to read a guide book next time!

Queeltie · 30/08/2015 23:03

I would complain. Fine to have a small and large steak for sale, but a lady steak is just patronising. Also probably bad for business as few men who want a smaller portion are going to want to order a Lady steak.

Helpmeoutofthemaze · 30/08/2015 23:05

I think it's good. Women are supposed to eat fewer calories than men. That said, if you wished to eat the bigger steak then you'd be free to do so.

SmillasSenseOfSnow · 30/08/2015 23:11

Also probably bad for business as few men who want a smaller portion are going to want to order a Lady steak.

On the contrary - it prompts men to buy more than they need, thereby spending more money. Just like the whole giant portion size thing in the US. Give someone a giant portion and they won't feel too bad about paying you more money for it - even if it's way more than they needed. Result: more money per customer, and they still think of it as you being generous with the food rather than conning them out of money and causing food wastage. Apparently.

Source: some random shit I saw on TV about 15 years ago.

Women are supposed to eat fewer calories than men.

No. On average women need fewer calories than men. This is not true for every woman or every man. This does not take into account size, body type, breastfeeding, fitness levels, metabolism, what else the person has eaten that day or intends to eat. It is irrelevant anyway, thus is a restaurant, not a boot camp.

bessarabiantiger · 30/08/2015 23:38

I have to eat 8,000 calories per day.

I WILL eat the waiter if food is not forthcoming immediately. Offer me a 'lady' steak and I may beat you to death with it & devour your corpse in addition to every dish ordered within an 8' radius.

Do not get between a weightlifter and her food.

Lady steak Grin

LazyLohan · 30/08/2015 23:58

It's a name for a fillet steak:

LazyLohan · 31/08/2015 00:01

Grin Worra

bessarabiantiger · 31/08/2015 00:03

No that's a description for a fillet steak.

bessarabiantiger · 31/08/2015 00:06

If in any doubt about names vs descriptions, do check out the amazon reviews for ladies' pens. HOW THE HELL DID WE COPE BEFORE BIROS WERE GENDER-SPECIFIC? HOW?

Full portion/half portion. Problem solved without pissing people off.

LazyLohan · 31/08/2015 00:12

Read the first line of the description for 'fillet steak' it refers to it as lady's steak. As far as I can see online it always refers to a cut of fillet steak. So it's not saying 'this is a steak for feeble little ladies' it's saying 'it's a fillet steak'. Which is different.

bessarabiantiger · 31/08/2015 00:21

So why not say 'This is fillet steak'?

I am not blaming you lazy. Honestly? I'm a bit bored and watching Lars von Trier marathons whilst occasionally checking-in here.

I have no strong opinions. Other than eating the server- I would absolutely do that. 8,000 calories ain't cheap.

BigChocFrenzy · 31/08/2015 00:26

Patronising, sexist and doesn't give the specific info I need anyway:
a serious steak restaurant would give the raw steak weight: 150 / 180 / 250g etc
I prefer fish, but if I order a steak, size matters. I don't do "lady-like" and definitely not when it comes to food.

I (5'3" female lifter / boxer) once ate a 500g steak in Germany, while my male companions settled for the 250g. I admit it was more that they dared me to and eating the last bit was a struggle.

WorraLiberty · 31/08/2015 00:28

Tbh I agree with the OP

It is sexist/1950s twee to be using 'lady steak' instead of just listing them all by weight.

Having said that, it grates on me a bit how so many people nowadays won't say anything at the time, but will happily go home and complain via email/the internet.

Nothing wrong with with mentioning it at the time with a firm smile, and it would probably have more impact than tapping at keys on the internet.

bessarabiantiger · 31/08/2015 00:38

Portion = x
Half portion = x

Mentioning a stupid naming policy to a waiter 'at the time' is going to change precisely fuck-all.

Hahaha Worra!

NeedsAsockamnesty · 31/08/2015 01:11

I've only ever seen it in reference to a fillet as well.

SisterNancySinatra · 31/08/2015 10:51

Worra - That picture has turned my stomach . Perhaps the restaurant should of put that on the menu .
