Out of one direction regarding their break, that they watch 'Amy' so they can see how exploitative that industry is.

And at the same time keep in mind that they have been touring for three years, and recording albums at the same time. Unlike the rolling stones and Freddie mercury, who feature on stupid memes comparing them to 1D.

Disclaimer - I am not a 1D fan. But this is, IMO, just another case of people thinking it's OK to rip the piss out of other human beings, with no sense of compassion out empathy or stopping to consider what life might be like for them at the moment. Thankfully, for asylum seekers and refugees there seems to be a bit more understanding now than there has been recently.

Teen bands break up all the time - people take the piss because they don't have an ounce of actual talent - they did their thing and now it's over. They had success which was built on a distinct lack of talent, so they haven't done too badly really. And in a couple of weeks' years' time nobody will give a shit.

Of course people are going to compare them unfavourably to the likes of Freddie Mercury - he was incredibly talented, a fabulous showman and a great loss to the music industry.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 29/08/2015 02:06

And talented people will always sell records, even after they have passed away.

Manufactured bands like 1D know that they only have a short time in which to be successful and that in a few years it will all be over and they will go back to obscurity. For them to think otherwise would be pathetically naive.

BlueMoonRising · 29/08/2015 02:10

LiveDrusilla, I have no problem with anything you said, and have no issue with people being critical of the music.

I just see no reason for personal attacks.

Arsenic · 29/08/2015 02:38

I hope so Christine Confused

Arsenic · 29/08/2015 02:39

OP do you think Amy Winehouse's experience of the music industry (music? life generally?) was comparable to that of 1direction, then?

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 29/08/2015 07:39

1Direction
Asylum seekers
Amy Winehouse.

There's a trio I wouldn't have put together for an AIBUSmile.

What are the personal attacks you speak of?

I doubt the lads give two short shits
about any negative publicity, why would they?

Compassion, Why do they need that? their appeal is on the wane so they've got out before they're usurped by the next Simon Cowell project.

Theyve made a shed load of money and are still young, I bet they're all laughing their arses off.

PegsPigs · 29/08/2015 07:52

I agree OP. I think a lot of young people harbour a fantasy about being a pop star which the reality doesn't bear out. They are very young to be working so hard and one questions how much professional support they've had along the way. Just because their job is a lot of people's fantasy doesn't mean we can't have compassion for them when they've been worked so hard they need a break. We see it over and over again. Look at JLS. Even Take That needed a good few years before they could come back on their own terms. I wouldn't want to be a pop star these days. It looks like selling your soul to the devil (Simon Cowell) to me.

GudrunBrangwen · 29/08/2015 07:59

I feel sorry for them but I loathe the whole industry and the fact they signed up for and put up with the system kind of makes me lose sympathy.

It was a massive sell out all along. They sold out. Yes, it's unpleasant, but did they not realise this at the start and decide it was worth it?

More than anything I hate the adults who exploit these kids.

GudrunBrangwen · 29/08/2015 08:01

Btw I know very little about any of it but it happens time and time again, over and over, every generation has a new exploited boy band.

wigglesrock · 29/08/2015 08:36

But I'm confused as to why you'd want anyone to have any compassion or sympathy for One Direction? They've made their money, it's not like they've been down the mines, they've arguably lost the most interesting / attractive member of the band, they want to pursue other things, they're young enough to. The music industry hasn't chewed them up and spat them out.

I rip the piss out of loads of musicians /actors/ directors/ famous people/ royalty / tv presenters/ writers. My compassion for actual events that deserve compassion is grand - a band splitting up with more money than sense, at the height of their fame - nah you're alright.
Oh and I never thought their music was particularly shite, I thought it was quite appealing.

Savagebeauty · 29/08/2015 08:39

Are you Harry Styles' mother?

differentnameforthis · 29/08/2015 08:40

Yeah, poor boys... all that work & nothing to show for it...

Oh, hold on..... [eyeroll]

Shockers · 29/08/2015 08:43

If you are, would you buy him some shampoo?

wowfudge · 29/08/2015 09:01

And a comb.

toomanyeggs · 29/08/2015 10:01

some teenage boys that make millions with super shitty "music"??

And their merchandise...my god, the merchandise.

Shoes, clothes, stationary, jewellery, stickers, films, quilt covers, cushions, blankets, bags...

They had their corner of the market, they exploited it. Can't say I feel that sorry for them...

their appeal is on the wane so they've got out before they're usurped by the next Simon Cowell project. YY!!

Perhaps you should be more worried about the people who are putting together apple appliances, working 10hrs a day, 6 days a week all for around $16 (US) a day! Now that is exploitation!
