AIBU to think that if you order Chicken, Bacon and Avocado salad...

It should have some flipping avocado in it? Even a tiny bit?

Just been out for dinner at that Chiquitos Mexican chain place (Shit-eatos it should be called, all restaurants of this ilk are not my choice ever but the DC wanted to go there and we were in a hurry) and I ordered the chicken, bacon and avocado salad and it turned up with no avocado.

Apprently the kitchen had run out even though it's a Mexican theme chain and they must have gallons guacamole for the fajitas and they never thought to offer me any of that instead so they just decided without consulting me that they'd serve my 3 MAIN NAMED INGREDIENT salad without one of the main ingredients. Hmm

I really hate it when restaurants do this. It happens to me a lot. I recently ate somewhere where the halloumi salad that arrived in front of me was doused in a warm spicy tomato sauce (not mentioned in the description at all on the menu at all) buy totally minus the rocket salad it should have come with, as per the description.

It's not on. It's not. AIBU?

This is not good, I work in a restaurant (chain) and if a main ingredient is missing we take the whole meal off of the menu, we tell diners when they arrive it's unavailable and why so if they did really want it they could choose it without that ingredient.

Also as I drive I often pop out to get things that might go unavailable ie avocado, mozzarella and as I said it's a chain I work for so why can't others do this?

cruikshank · 28/08/2015 23:17

I am shocked and alarmed at the dangerously foolhardy approach to avocados I am hearing about on this thread. I use a spoon to get the stone out and just assumed everyone else did as well. You people are risking your lives!

BlackeyedSusan · 28/08/2015 23:20

well who knew that such a "boring" thread opener could turn out to contain ninja avocados? Grin

and fulfilled the description as listed. (and more) unlike the sodding restaurant.

Waitingimpatient · 28/08/2015 23:27

It really did nearly kill me! Tired it for the first time earlier in the year as had read how healthy it was. Each time I ate it I got sicker and sicker. It was only when I was so ill and couldn't eat anything at all then gradually reintroduced foods that we realised avocado was the problem. No idea what is in them but I have never been so Ill in my life

Didn't seem to be an allergic reaction as such, no swelling, hives etc but it shut down my whole digestive system, caused severe pain, inability to eat/drink and it was horrendous!

DarylDixonsDarlin · 28/08/2015 23:27

I am away on hols this week and this has reminded me, the last time we went away we stayed at Premier Inn with a Beefeater attached, where you go to have your breakfasts...they had no eggs. For cooked breakfast Confused
But they didnt tell anyone this until we'd paid for a full breakfast, and had the cold stuff/drinks then tried to order the hot food. Who the fuck serves breakfasts and runs out of eggs?!

I did get a refund though. In your case OP I would have expected a full refund if you weren't told about it before you ordered. Not a measly fiver off.

notquitehuman · 29/08/2015 00:55

I tried Chiquitos once as I love mexican, and not many places in the UK offer it. The service and food were beyond shit. As I was complaining to the manager, he simply held up his hand and walked off. I couldn't find an email address for them, so I made a proper written complaint by letter. Never did get an acknowledgement or a response. Oh well.

Fatmomma99 · 29/08/2015 01:06

Waitingimpatient, I'm sorry you were ill, but avocados are the food of the gods, so can't think what happened there must be something wrong with your soul

Getting the stone out is not a problem if you were a child of the 70s (as I was).... my parents (miss you, dad!) own proper avocado bowls. They have so many, DM uses them as soap dishes in the bathroom!

There is literally nothing more gorgeous than an avocado with vinegerette!

LittleMissStresshead · 29/08/2015 01:36

Off to google avocado bowls bed. Grin

HellKitty · 29/08/2015 04:22

I took the DCs there the other day and it had absolutely nothing to do with the fact they have Brahma on draught. Nope, nothing at all.

londonrach · 29/08/2015 07:27

londonrach · 29/08/2015 07:31

derektheladyhamster · 29/08/2015 07:37

I had a banana split which had no banana in once. They did replace it, but how can you make a banana split and forget the banana? Confused

cheesypasta · 29/08/2015 07:49

I love avocado sliced and on toast, but that means you can't use a spoon and I do frequently risk stone removal knife injury. Pleased it's not just me.

To avoid injuries invest in this gadget. Stone removal is so much safer. www.lakeland.co.uk/16511/OXO-Good-Grips-3-in-1-Avocado-Tool

Back in the 70s my mum and my auntie had heard of 'avocado pears' and how gorgeous they were. When they were on holiday they saw some and bought one to share. They took it back to the hotel, carefully peeled and sliced it (a bit bewildered by the stone) and settled down to enjoy their juicy 'cutted up pear'...
They didn't know it was meant to be savoury. I actually had a postcard warning me never to waste my money on these soapy abominations. They are among my favourite foods but I couldn't ever get mum to try another not even with prawns and vinaigrette.
Ah the deception of avocados!

BabyGanoush · 29/08/2015 08:09

I love Mexican food

The thing that impressed me in Mexico was that all places have proper home made sauces/dips, they never use stuff from tubs or sachets of mass produced sauce.

That's why I never go to these sad chains, nithing to do with Mexican food!

Still, I feel your pain OP. I hate bad meals out.

itsraininginbaltimore · 29/08/2015 08:10

Does anyone have an avocado saver? I do. [smug]

I have been to Chiquitos twice now and it has been shit both times. It is now crossed off my list along with Harvester and Frankie & Benny's - shittest of all shit places. All these chain places are the same to be honest, TGI, Frankie and Benny, Beefeater, all shit. Everything tastes exactly the same irrespective of what you order. Huge great menu of 100 different things which basically distills down to about 15 things served three ways but dressed up to look like a hundred different things.

But sometimes I allow myself to forget how shit they are and it's any port in a storm for an impromptu family meal that doesn't require booking ahead and remortgaging (huge teenagers who always want everything with chips) then I am left wondering why I bother really. We'd have eaten equally well in McDonalds for a fraction of the price.

I have had good experiences in Giraffe and Wagamama but I think they are in a different league anyway. I have never been to a Wahaca but I have her cookery books. Don't think there is one anywhere near me.

Red exactly! This place is slap-bang next to a huge supermarket - how hard would it be to send someone out for a few avocados?

Sorry it's called an Avocado Hugger, not saver. Even better.

Pran I remember my mum doing exactly the same thing in about 1976. We didn't know it was supposed to be soft and ripe and after we'd grappled with the unwieldy thing we munched our way through rock hard soapy lumps of the stuff wondering what all the fuss was about. Never tried another one until about 1986. Grin

I use a spoon to remove the stone and then slice the avocado. Hmm

FairNotFit · 29/08/2015 08:22

I need an Avocado Hugger. It's a revelation!

itsraininginbaltimore · 29/08/2015 08:22

That's not as much fun though is it Just? That frisson of excitement and slight fear you get when you go at it with the pointy end of a Global knife is not to be underestimated.

Jenijena · 29/08/2015 08:26

There's a Wahaca opening near me next year. Cannot wait, it's one of my favourites. Before I had DS chain restaurants were spawn of devil, now they're convenient cheap and reliable and don't even Blanche at toddler eating habits.

Avocado with knives us just wrong though. It would be terribly zeitgeisty to have avocado for breakfast now wouldn't it.

cashewnutty · 29/08/2015 08:31

I have never used anything other than my bare hands to remove an avocado stone. They are easy to prise out. What is all the need for a knife or spoons?
