To buy ds a coat in asda

Ds is 7 and going into year 3 - seen a nice coat on the George website but some of the kids in his class are starting to be a bit brand minded. Ds isn't YET. I could always get one in h&m but the asda one we had last year was fab. Was hoping for another year of cheap and cheerful before the dreaded brand obsession

You are being totally daft.

Just get the Asda coat.

BumpTheElephant · 27/08/2015 21:58

Of course Yanbu.
What's wrong with Asda?
My entire uniform (in fact all my clothes) were from supermarkets right up until I left school. I had a 5 quid Asda rucksack in high school. Not one person took the piss. Nobody gave a shite and probably didn't even notice! I think parents care more about their kids fitting in than their children do.

RabbitSaysWoof · 27/08/2015 21:59

I would I loved ds's coat from Asda last year (brilliant retro parker), I think their coats are great. Ds's df who is a brand snob also loved the George coat I was Shock when he made a point of saying he's new coat is great.

DontStopBelievin · 27/08/2015 22:02

I can seriously tell you now that my year 3 (going into year 4 so just turned 8 years old) would not care less where his coat from. As long as it's nice, and keeps him warm, where does it matter where it came from?!
Asda's got some lovely stuff.
No-one else in his year are bothered about labels either. Are you sure it's not just you that's bothered instead?! Smile

auntilin · 27/08/2015 22:02

asda coats are good quality, they wash well too.

BathshebaDarkstone · 27/08/2015 22:10

All my DC's clothes used to come from Asda which is a bus ride away (no car), now they come from the big new Sainsbury's which is 3 minutes' walk away. We couldn't afford brands anyway. Smile

Lurkedforever1 · 27/08/2015 22:12

Yanbu. A good few years ago I bought dd one in a sale for something silly like £2 in 2 sizes too big so she didn't wreck her decent coats playing in mud outside school hours. It's outlasted all the rest except the proper outdoor wear ones. Tbh even the really brand obsessed kids who by y6 would frequently ask others how much their new x cost and what brand it was, cos natch who'd buy a non brand, weren't that bad at y3 and wouldn't have noticed.

spiderlight · 27/08/2015 22:22

Mine is going into Y4 and could not give two hoots about where his clothes are from. if it's warm and he likes it, then go for it. It will in all likelihood be used as a goalpost, left in puddles and worn to slide down muddy slopes all winter, if mine is anything to go by!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 27/08/2015 22:24

One slight word of warning; DS has a gorgeous well priced coat from ASDA a couple of years ago. Only thing was, half the school picked up on the same bargain. There were about four in his class and lots of others in the other classes too. DS brought home a different coat that every night and very rarely his own; there was a sort of communal pool of coats Grin

NeedsAsockamnesty · 27/08/2015 22:26

Is brand awareness even a thing?

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 27/08/2015 22:28

Of course ynbu. Designer wear for a growing child. Never heard of anything more ridiculous. I refused point blank. Why should i pay for my child to advertise a name for someone.
My DD lived in Ethel Austin's and Asda, and looked gorgeous.
She's 16 now and has never been interested in brand names.

TheCrowFromBelow · 27/08/2015 22:28

dS2 is starting Y4, he won't wear a coat any way, and has absolutely no interest in the label. spider is spot on

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 27/08/2015 22:29

Ds is off to high school next week, they specify "plain black or dark blue coat with no markings or logos"

Buy him the asda coat, as long as it is warm and weatherproof!

My ds is 12 and only starting to notice brands. He has spent all week in a cheap market hoodie, as it is BRIGHT green...

He chooses things he likes, not based on names.

ouryve · 27/08/2015 22:32

PLenty of 7 year olds at DS2's school wear cats from ASDA, Tesco, Primark or wherever. Unless they have a long walk, I can't think of any good reason to buy a 7 year old an overly expensive coat for school, which might fit for one season if you're lucky and if it's not lost or ripped by January. If they do have a long walk in all weathers, an expensive trendy brand probably isn' the answer.

My boys have gone through primary with a mixture of £15 in the Next Sale and a little more than that in the Landsend sale (got 2 years out of that one before it was outgrown and it was properly waterproof all the way through, though far from fashionable) plus the odd cagoule.

IsabellaofFrance · 27/08/2015 22:39

My 14yo DS has kind of got into brands in the last year or so, but even then its only Converse that he cares about. He hates shopping and I think if he was honest he hates most clothes - has a full closet yet wears the same handful of things.

I doubt there are many 7 year olds checking the label of where coats come from!

DustyCropHopper · 27/08/2015 22:39

I just bought both ds' (going into yr3 and yr5) a coat each from Asda. I refuse to spend a fortune on a coat for school and as they have to have brown (black as a last resort) they get them where ever I can get one.

Rarity08 · 27/08/2015 22:42

My DD is 7 and has no 'brand' clothing and no understanding of it. At this age don't encourage it. Get him the asda coat.

blibblobblub · 27/08/2015 22:51

I bought myself a coat from the Asda children's section Blush

So yes, I would say buy the coat.

I'm not sure that my 7-in-10 days year old knows what a brand is. He has clothes, football kit, school uniform and Beaver uniform. Most of his clothes are hand me downs and charity shop finds and he knows it. Doesn't care, it gives us more money for Lego!

Lauren15 · 27/08/2015 23:11

Asda coats are really good value for money. I'm going to buy dd's (7) next coat from there. Personally if someone at school made a comment, I would avoid them, not Asda.

AbeSaidYes · 27/08/2015 23:13

I fingered a few kids cows in Asda the other day and they were lovely.

Ledkr · 27/08/2015 23:18

Dd is 13 and surrounded by label obsessied teen girls.
She is very pretty and dresses beautifully and was thrilled earlier with her 11 pound blazer from ASDA as it means she has more money to spend at the festival we are off to for the weekend!
Fashion vs ice creans, fudge, quirky jewellery and fairground rides, no contest there.

BlinkAndMiss · 27/08/2015 23:24

Well you can either discourage or encourage the brand obsession. Or in this case, you could create it.

This is so depressing.

LadyB49 · 27/08/2015 23:28

Kids clothes in Asda are excellent and stylish.
Why think twice ??
