To freak out about mouse wee/poo

Ds has just had dinner at MILs and he had some spaghetti hoops out of a cupboard that has had mouse droppings in it last week. She washed out and disinfected the cupboard and tins but it was a ring pull so the tin kinda dips in the food doesn't it so I'm freaking out a bit. She's not seen any droppings in there since she cleaned. Just the thought of him eating after there had been mouse wee/droppings in there.. eek!

meh, it's only germs.

Er, has she set any mouse traps yet?!

mispolly · 27/08/2015 18:52

Yeah but caught nothing so far..

Yes you are being v neurotic. It's sealed food!

mispolly · 27/08/2015 18:59

Yes it is sealed but the lid kind of dips in when you open it.. p.s did I mention I am a bit neurotic by nature Grin

You're being neurotic

However, look up the recent cases of Hantavirus and the PLAGUE at Yosemite and you'll see mouse droppings are really dangerous, thus yanbu on this point.

The food however I anticipate was fine as she presumably didn't stir it with a mouse, and would have cooked it properly. But I kind of agree. Kind of.

leghoul · 27/08/2015 19:03

disclaimer: plague not linked to mouse droppings, think the case was linked to fleas in other animals

but adds to ambience of general horror of mice, see also: leprosy on mouse feet

I'm in the uk thhere thats pretty rare, i was more worried about them carrying other germs in general.

If she disinfected the tins then it's safe. Grin

mispolly · 27/08/2015 19:15

Yeah she said she did so I'm hoping they've not been back in since.

Weils disease folks, you've missed the obvious. Though I still think MEH.

YeOldeTrout · 27/08/2015 19:45

Oh, and E. Coli 157. Everything carries that nasty bug.

mispolly · 27/08/2015 19:49

So I should be worried? Having a slight nervous breakdown here..

don't worry! World is full of germs, he's fine so things are fine. Let it go.

winchester1 · 27/08/2015 20:23

Seriously don't worry. I hate too say it but far worse than mice have been in your shopping trolley, the warehouse etc and we aren't all dropping with illnesses so it must be fine.

NotSoDesperateHousewife · 27/08/2015 20:29

She disinfected the sealed tin. Vvvvv neurotic!

Lucked · 27/08/2015 20:32

Well I have never disinfected a tin and there must be shelf stackers and shoppers out there with poor hygiene and unwashed hands so that means this is one of the safest meals you have had.

I once knew someone who got leptospirosis from a beer bottle, it's not unusual for bars to keep stock in cellars and then rats run over the top of them. Glad I am a gin drinker!

mispolly · 27/08/2015 20:47

Thanks everyone

I've stayed at very rural holiday cottages with mice. I just clean droppings up and make sure I tidy food away close up all gaps in skirting boards I can see and strategically place mouse traps.
It never occurred to me to panic about them. Mice are a fact of life in rural areas. You sound very urban.

mispolly · 27/08/2015 21:30

I am very urban and also a bit of a germaphobe Blush
