Long story...

2/3 weeks back DH mentioned when I got home that DS has banged his lip at nursery. No big issue. Couldnt see naything so must have been a minor incident. Spotted his accident form and read it and it stated he had crawled out of his coracle after his nap, slipped and banged his face. That a cold compress had been applied, cuddles given and parents contacted. Neither of us received a phone call but DH said that the accident form was being completed on collection at 430. The incident happened at 2. I queried the "contact" with the nursery and was told it was a mis-wording mistake and they had meant to put informed. OK. Fine.

Son has been diagnosed with a cows milk protein allergy. Explained during the exclusion trial and also since diagnosis that DS must have ANY dairy. I was a little thrown when I got the reply of "So can he have yoghurt" when I mentioned this. No no dairy. "So can he have his normal formula" No, just his new special one.

As far as I'm aware they have been great with this and have bought him soy yogurt and milk following my confirmation he could have soya.

Yesterday got home from work and checked his diary. It said he had had cream cheese and breadsticks for his snack. I rang and spoke with the manager who said she would check this morning with the workers and get back to me. I then mentioned to DH that DS had only had 2oz milk all day. DH said no he hasnt, J said that he had 2oz this morning and 7 this afternoon. It only stated 2oz in his diary.

Manager called me this morning and advised that DS had definitely not had cream cheese as she had checked with his keyworker and their internal diary too. The reason it had been recorded was another worker was covering and wrote it in his diary.

I mentioned the none recording of milk and said whilst I know all these things might not seem major, thats 3 misinformings/no recording incidents in as many weeks and whilst I appreciate they are busy I need to be keeping track of his milk intake and diet because of his CMPA and calcium intake. She said she understands completely and I should be given the full picture and that she will mention this at a team meeting today.

I was thinking afterwards, should I have made more of an issue, especially with a worker looking after him/writing in his diary that clearly hasnt checked things properly?

(posted before I had finished)

Part of me thinks its an easy mistake to make and hopefully they will improve but some others have said that it's not acceptable at all and I should be kicking up a real stink.

The lip thing, not a big deal. Honestly, miswording and it is fine.

The cream cheese thing, you must have known he hadn't had any because otherwise he would have had some sort of reaction??

The lack of milk recording, not okay, as like you say, you need to know.

But, realistically if he has all these issues why is he at a nursery? A child-minder could give better attention and relay more information to you.

I know it isn't excusable, but nurseries have so much going on and are busy places. I have worked in them and it is hard keeping up with all the various issues with the children, and relaying it back to the parents, who scrutinize the diaries so closely. And remember a lot of nursery workers are very young.

I once covered a room over lunch breaks 12-2.30, and spent ages telling a parent what their child had done that day, including morning and snack etc and turns out the child had only been there about an hour. Whoops! The parent had popped back to get them as they had to go somewhere urgently and they had no been there for snack or the morning, but she let me waffle on before reporting me to the manager!

He has slow reacting to cmpa so I wouldnt have known Ilikebaking until today.

There are 3 workers in the baby room with 6 babies. I would think a child who has an allergy would perhaps have more attention paid at mealtimes - god forbid it had been a more serious allergy and he had been given it. Doesnt seem like the worker who was covering knew he shouldnt have dairy and would she really have stopped him if he had gone to get some from another of the babies.

Part of me thinks just let it go but then another thinks hang on a minute, you are paid to look after and care for my child and I am not feeling that you're giving the attention to his allergy that is required - its not even a tricky allergy. Simple. No dairy.

Creche diaries often are not completed in an accurate way. I know of cases where all the diaries were filled in in the morning before most of the events had happened. I know of cases where diaries were filled in at the end of the day all in one go. You say in your OP that a different key worker filled our your son's diary. It's a time consuming job that often there isn't time for.
If I were you I'd query every single time that something recorded in the diary doesn't add up. Maybe that way they will be more careful.

I think you've done exactly the right thing- not a massive fuss but got the (very valid) point across

cjt110 · 26/08/2015 12:29

gabsdot45 I think my concern is more that THAT worker, isnt even from the baby room - so not like it's not his keyworker but another person who works with him anyway.

Hopefully we will see some changes and like you suggested I will query anything I am not sure of.

Hopefully now, they will sort theirselves out but next time, I might not be so patient about it all FoxesSitOnBoxes
