to want my 4yo to stop talking?

He's amazing. He's so intelligent and funny. But he talks incessantly. Running commentaries on the various things that pop into his head and if I don't respond verbally within 0.05 of a second he repeats it, over and over.
I think he's said "mummy" more than 1,000 times today.
Is this usual for a 4yo? Is it just me whose ears are bleeding by noon?

Yes . Then they stop talking to you when they reach teenagedom and you have to extract every single sulky word out of their mouth. Wink

MyIronLung · 25/08/2015 21:18

This is my life.

Getyercoat · 25/08/2015 21:18

Oh god it continues at this pace until then? I think I might lose my mind.

My constantly-talking DS is 10. Never spoke a word til he was 3 but now it's CONSTANT! I want to shoot myself today to get some peace. Sad

howabout · 25/08/2015 21:21

YANBU
Mine keeps asking me questions about her book when we are out in the car. The radio on very loud may soon be deployed.

Iamatotalandutteridiot · 25/08/2015 21:21

Hmm... YABU.

Would you prefer he woke up tomorrow and didn't speak?

My 4YO didn't speak. At all. He's also intelligent and funny. Just doesn't do conversation so much. Or speaking.

I'd take 1000 'Mummy's over 1000000 'trying to work out what the hell is going on in your head's.

Just saying.

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 25/08/2015 21:21

I don't think it's a sudden stop at teens...
I think it gradually slows down from 12-14.

But on the other hand, while they never shut up, they don't actually expect you to listen all the time.

When ds was younger, there had to be noise. If it was quiet, he talked constantly. So we put the radio on. He slowed a bit.

Until the x decided (hourly) that this is his favourite song, so he will turn the radio up (fair enough) and then decide to ask me a serious question. Every. Flipping. Time.

Getyercoat · 25/08/2015 21:23

DS said his first proper word, apart from mama and dada, at 13 months. He talked before he walked. He spoke in sentences at 17 months.
I thought he'd tire of it a bit. Nope. He's going full throttle all day every day.
I need a drink or six.

Haha my 4 year old is the same, he verbally dissects every little thing!! Feel your pain Wine

icclemunchy · 25/08/2015 21:25

Mine expects a response why can't Hmm if I'm not quick enough we get 'mummy! (In a weird northern accent) I saaaaiiiid" followed by the same thing over again

PaulAnkaTheDog · 25/08/2015 21:28

Good grief I remember this. Even now at nine he's non stop.

jinglymum · 25/08/2015 21:29

Mine also expects a response to everything, sometimes I feel as if he is quizzing me to check I've been listening.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 25/08/2015 21:31

Thank your blessings. I have non verbal child. I would give anything to hear her utter one word.

My 3yo is very sweet about me napping for 20 mins of an afternoon while she plays (heavily prg) but today that didn't extend to also not talking or stroking my face. I literally had to sit in silence for an hour when dh got back later on.

My brain exploded

Millipedewithherfeetup · 25/08/2015 21:34

Yanbu it can be draining, i found singing songs really good when mine was at this stage.

Jo4040 · 25/08/2015 21:35

My four year old found a dead seagul on holiday. He talked and talked and talked about it and asked and asked questions until I had to tactfully ask him to 'think about something else now, I know its interesting you, so let's have one more question and then we can move on...

He replied ' why didn't it have crosses on its eyes like on the telly?!'

Elisheva · 25/08/2015 21:37

I have two boys, 5 and 8, they both talk incessantly, about different things, at the same time, often while I'm on the toilet. And they expect me to know the answer to everything. At 6:30 in the morning I don't have the capacity to process questions like 'How do you clean a spider?' or 'Can God take his feet off?'. They even talk in their sleep.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 25/08/2015 21:37

Dinosaur and Imatotal that's awful for you both but the op is just having a light hearted whinge. All parents do it and I'm sure every one of them would offend someone, somewhere, with it. Let's not try and make someone feel bad for trying to make light of something that is testing for her.

beela · 25/08/2015 21:39

My brain just can't cope with the non-sequiters (sp?).
DS: when the tooth fairy comes, how does she get in?
Me: well, she's a fairy, so she can get in using magic.
DS: oh right. And what else does she do?
Me: how do you mean?
DS: well, does she count the teeth that she has collected?
Me: maybe, I'm not too sure. I'll find out for you.
DS: ok. And you know how we came after the dinosaurs, well what will come after us?
Me: wtf?

Mine used to pursue me around the house, yammering away. One particular offender would use long car journeys as a chance to cross-examine me, in detail, about politics, or adoption, or death (she was about 8-10 at the time).

They do grow out of it. Eventually.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 25/08/2015 21:42

I'm not offended by the op I get that it is lighthearted, I'm sure it is draining. I'm just pointing out that you should try and appreciate what a wonderful gift you have, I think it is sometimes easy to take things for granted.

What Paul said. Lots of things are annoying but lots of people would love to have the chance of that annoyance.

Both my kids (8 and 4) talk non stop. The youngest is the worst though because she has developed a constant whiny voice and it is like nails down a blackboard.
